Doom 3 problem

Start of the game - I follow the little sentry droid. Hop on the elevator, push the button and...

The game quits and boots me out to my desktop.

WTF???

If it happens every time, try reinstalling the game. Also try turning down the graphics settings and see if it still does it.

On a different note; since the title of this thread is "Doom 3 problem", I'm going to post a problem as well.

Does anyone know how to change DoomConfig.cfg to support joysticks? I've got an Xbox controller that I use with my HTPC and I wanted to play Doom 3 on it since it has a great surround sound system. I was able to use it on Unreal 2004 by adding some lines to the config file, but I can't find anything on it for Doom 3.

Every time -

Oh, and I suppose my machine specs will be helpful.

AMD XP 2700+
256 MB RAM ------> EDIT: WRONG! I have 512 MB
9700 PRO 128 MB

Running Win XP Pro

I'm going to take off on a road trip in a couple hours. When I return, I'll either
A) try reinstalling the game
B) see a brilliant solution to my problem in this thread.

I think it will be "B"

Yeah, isnt the minimum 384? Even if it isnt, thats definitely going to be a huge bottleneck.

I'd add another 512 at least.

I just upgraded from 512 to 768, and believe me, it works wonders. I'm adding an additional 512 in the next few days.

Yeah, I was gonna suggest more RAM too. I dunno that it's related to your problem, but either way you NEED more RAM to play Doom 3. Besides, RAM is cheap these days.

It isn't a lack of RAM. I'm an idtiot I have (2X) 256 MB RAM. Quickly doing the math....that's 512 MB

Am I the only person having this problem? (with Doom, not with math)

Clavus - What version of the drivers are you using. Many people with ATI's are reporting problems. The latest betas 4.9 with optimized OPENGL for DOOM 3 can be found here. Hope this helps ya out.

Xepidemic , try setting your 9800 pro back to stock speeds. John C. has said that even if you haven't had problems with an oc'd video card that D3 would cause problems. I'm running a 9600se (I know, I know) with no artifacts.

And for anyone wondering, D3 will run with 256 megs of ram.

I'd say post it at http://www.activison.com/support if I were you. You'll get much more 'seasoned' answers there

Good luck.

Hi Clavus.

I would update the video drivers. If you are not sure of what version you have installed now, then it must be time to update. If you're unsure about the 4.9 betas (the drivers, not the fish) then just get the "known-good" 4.7 catalyst drivers here:

http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/w...=10&submit.y=2

The previous version will need to be uninstalled prior to installing the new ones. Go to the Control Panel and hit Add/Remove Programs, then uninstall the "ATI Display Driver." After restarting, install the new ones and restart again (whee.)

I think that should do it. Keep in mind that developers always get the latest drivers to develop with, which is why this should do the trick. Your RAM appears to be plenty.

Once you head down that elevator.....heh heh......

I was crashing in a similar way earlier in the game and video card drivers fixed the problem. Try the newest non-beta drivers first.

I can't say that OC'ing stuff leads to problems, seeing how I am OC'ing my x800 Pro from (475 / 450) to (542 / 470) without any problems.
But if Carmack himself said it.. then give it a try.

Here is a guide to tweak Doom:
http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/Doom3/FPSVisuals.htm

Generally, people claim these settings help the most:

Quote:
image_useCache
image_cacheMegs
image_cacheMinK Controls memory set aside for temporary loading of full-sized precompressed images and files.

WARNING - When set incorrectly this can cause Doom3 to crash at startup or cause instability/graphical artifacts in game.

Set cache megs to a higher value if you have 512 megabytes or more of system RAM. Guideline is 1/6 to 1/4 of your system RAM.

Set image_cacheMinK to 2048, this can be lower but may cause Doom3 to crash.

Set image_useCache to 1 to enable background load image caching
There is also a setting where you configure the amount of RAM your video card has... I belive its:

Quote:
com_VideoRam X
where X is the amount of memory your video card has (in this case 128).

Check the guide if you need help on how to implement those.
Be sure to back up your DoomConfig.cfg before doing this because if you change the wrong thing it will cause the game to crash even more.

If your getting little dots and such all over the screen it's most likely becuase you video card is being corrupted by heat, best choice is to buy more fans for your PC, and does this happen after a few hours of gameplay? and having your video corrupted like that shortens the life of it.

Can anyone help me with why when I click on multiplayer and it goes to show the available servers, it freezes? I can still here the music, but I can't move my mouse on doom. It's done that quite a few times, and when I play.. sometimes it crashes to desktop. All this occurs ONLY on multiplayer, never on single player. Thanks in advance fellow TFPers!

Did you download the new Doom3 hotfix driver from ATI? That improved performance on my machine by quite a bit.
