Korea-based Online game developer JC Entertainment announced today that it is working with Sega on the development of an Online game based off the Shenmue series, Korean newspaper Chosum Ilbo reports.

The title, which has been in development since February of last year, has a development and marketing budget of 30,000,000,000 won ($25,945,455 US). The marketing budget is said to include costs for both Korea and overseas. A closed beta test is planned for November of this year, with an open trial expected to begin in the first half of 2005.

A platform for the game has not been revealed, but given the Korean development background, we presume a Windows release is most likely.

-----

Following our initial report from earlier in the day, new details have come our way on Sega's attempts to take its Shenmue series of console adventure titles to the Online world. The resulting game, now officially titled Shenmue Online is being developed for the PC.

Shemue Online is a massively multiplayer action RPG. The game will feature virtual recreations of areas from 1980s Hong Kong and China and promises to allow tens of thousands of players to assume the role of militants, using martial arts, Chinese weapons and other powers in real-time fighting sequences.

Development and publishing duties for the game are being handled via partnerships between multiple firms. Korean Online developer JC Entertainment is managing content development along with Korean Online operations and Korean marketing for the title. Sega, while also responible for content development, is supervising development and licensing related to Online game operations outside of Korea. T2 Technology Holdings will handle the Chinese operations of the game as part of a recent agreement reached with Sega.

Fans of the series will be pleased to know that series father Yu Suzuki, now head of Sega internal studio Digital Rex, is taking a role in the game. Sega states that Suzuki will supervise ongoing activities for the game. Suzuki is known for having created the original storyline behind the full Shenmue saga.

As mentioned in our previous article, a private beta test for Shenmue Online will take place in in November of this year in Korea, to be followed by a Korean open beta test and commercial launch in Spring of 2005. T2 Technology expects to have the game out in China also in 2005. Plans for release outside these two territories have yet to be revealed.
I hate MMO games, but since this game is gonna be in the Shenmue universe, it is absolutely going to own my soul whenever it comes out. I love the Shenmue games, and I can't wait for this. I'd much rather have Shenmue III come out, but this will do. If you haven't played a Shenmue game, you really should, they are so great, and extremely underrated. Shenmue games bring storytelling in games to a whole new level, and pretty much redefined on how a game should play, in my opinion.

SEGA needs to hurry up and start working on Shenmue III, they've already got the storyline finished, and have had it done for quite some time now, they just need to create that into a game.

30 FUCKING MILLION DOLLARS!!!!!????? Sorry, just not used to seeing that big of a budget. Man, Sega must be banking a lot on this being a Everquest-sized success.

Sega's Shenmue games have always had tremendous budgets, the original Shenmue used to have the largest budget for a game, ever, but it has be dethroned since then.

What what is? The MMO Shenmue game, or the Shenmue series in general?

I just saw this recently. I love these games and I can't wait for part three. I can't but feel this is just delaying part 3 from being made. Also of yet Sega still doesn't know if they even wanna port this title state side. Look at how long it took to get Shenmue II to the US.

The premise of Shenmue does sounds boring but the large and enthralling environment got me hooked. It will be interesting to see how Sega approaches it as an online world, because with that budget, I doubt they would make something simply akin to "The Sims". Until then, I would like to finally get back to my UK import of Shenmue 2.

I to am another fan of Shenmue, it an awsome game. A little tiresome at points, but the good totaly out weighed the bad. Never figured this for a MMO in anyway... hmm... interesting.

Ohh heres someting a little on topic, since we are talking about Shenmue, a friend of mine showed me this site the other day, he didnt get the Shenmue skit but i thought it was funny. Place is called Mega 64, they also did a Metal Gear skit too thats prety damn funny. A shenmue fan should get the skit.

Sega is a bunch of idiots. They will release the game and when its well received they will dump it. Much like all the other things they have done. I have no doubt the game will be good. Just saying I don't like sega to follow through with it for a long period of time.

The city scape picture there is Hong Kong as seen from the harbor. Very well done to, I might add. They did a very good job of rendering the city. I miss that place.
Never got into the game myself. After 2 hours of trying to talk to everyone to find out where the little shit that steals your bag in the begining of the second one was, and coming up with nothing, I lost any desire I had for the game. Also, the load times every time youchace streets pissed me off to no end. I'll pass on this one, though it does look stunning graphicly.

Wow, no offense or anything, but you must really suck or have no patience. How did you not find Wong (the little kid who stole your bag), that is probably the easiest part of the entire game.

The Shenmue series was amazing.
I found with my friends you either loved it or hated it.

It's interesting to see sega push for shenmue to become a MMO, lets see how this turns out.

Well. It does make sense if you've actually played the game(s). Considering all of the magical elements of the Shenmue universe, and the supposed *hidden* powers within Ryo, and many other characters of the series.

Have you played Shenmue 2? If you have, then think back to the "stone pit" in Bailu Village.
