Just bought it today, but I have family in town the next 5 days, so won't likely even see the title screen until Wednesday of next week

I'd have to agree more with the above posted review than your comments. The retry for failed missions needs to be there for at least some missions as they are required to complete the game. Making the game unwinnable is a consequence that would prevent them from selling many copies of Fable 2.

As for the free ranging world, sure it is. If you're looking for bigger, then what? an MMO-style world? It could be argued that they aren't free ranging either, as there are borders of water or mountains in all of them that lock certain areas and prevent passage. If you want a TRULY open, 360 degree world, you'll probably have to wait another few years for technology and datasize to get there. I find it, through unjaded eyes, to be an incredibly impressive game.

I'm not saying it's not a good game, I'm just saying it is not what it was hyped up to be.

EDIT: also, the reviews agree with me about it being silly how it's impossible to completely fail a mission. And it's not even the core missions, it's also the little side missions that have nothing to do with the story.

Yeah, that part is pretty lame, I agree... but back to my original argument, what games ever ARE what they're hyped up to be? That's why I don't get into hype. Star Wars Galaxies was a HUGE let down compared to what it was supposed to be... but in reality, it was ground breaking in MANY areas of the MMO world.

I guess I know what you're saying. I just am shocked so many people expected that much more out of it. Molyneaux has done this to us before, ya know? If you don't, wait until B&W2 somes out, you'll see what I mean. *sigh* The man has more vision that he has coders.

As bltzkriegmcanon mentioned... 06Dec is ship date, which means shelf date is 07Dec. As far as I can tell, it seems to be a psuedo-firm date.

Starcraft Ghost? *shudder* We'll see. World of Warcraft is actually pretty sweet from what I could tell with the Stress Test from the other week. Halo 2 is... well, Halo 2. It speaks for itself!

Fable

Fri, September 17 2004 - 6:47 PM
by: Gabe

I was worried that when Fable came out I’d get sucked in and I wouldn’t have time to play Burnout 3 and Phantom Brave. So I’m actually kind of glad that Fable was a huge disappointment.

So in Fable you have a very small world divided up into dozens of tiny zones. Each of these zones sufferers from the “you can go anywhere you want…as long as you stay on the fucking path” school of game design. A winding path will take you through each one of these zones and you don’t need to worry about accidentally wandering off the path and getting lost. You’ll quickly notice that someone has placed sturdy impenetrable bushes, broken fences, rocks, and impassable pools of shallow water all along the road. The entire game may as well be played on rails as your options for exploration are essentially zilch. The really awesome thing about these tiny, linear zones is that they require an insane load time. Traveling from one side of the map to the other will require you to spend nearly as much time loading as playing. Thankfully at some point the designers realized that traversing their bullshit world was a real pain in the ass and so they decided to let you teleport wherever you want. I imagine this conversation went something like this:

Girl: “Wow, running around in our game fucking sucks.”

Guy: “What if you could just teleport wherever you wanted to go?”

Girl: “That doesn’t solve the underlying problem. Shouldn’t we instead address the fact that navigating our game world is a bitch?”

Guy: “We should have sex.”

Whoa, that certainly got hot! In my imagination all work place encounters between men and woman result in clandestine sex.

Not only do these tiny zones require loading but you also have to load every time you want to use a shovel or a fishing pole. The idea is that there is treasure buried all over the world just waiting to be dug up. However each time you want to dig you need to select the spade from your menu and then wait as the game loads the digging animation, at this point you will either get some treasure or you’ll see your character sigh. Then you get to wait again as it takes you back to the regular game. I dug twice before I was totally fucking sick of it.

So what’s going on in-between all this loading? Well you’re playing an extremely linear and limited hack and slash adventure game combined with a shitty version of the Sims mixed with animal crossing only minus all of animal crossings charm and inspiration. If you want to just play through Fable as fast as you can, it’s a boring but passable action RPG. The combat is awkward at first and the camera is frustrating but you can have some fun with it for a couple of hours. Thankfully that’s all the time you’ll need to invest if that’s how you decide to play the game. If you decide you want to buy a house or flirt with a girl you certainly can. You can also spend an insane amount of time dressing and building up your character. In fact a huge part of the game revolves around making your character look awesome. I can see how this might be cool in an MMO where you could show him off to other players but in Fable no one else will ever see your character. You can’t even take screen shots and upload them via live into some kind of online Fable hero’s picture album to share with your friends. You spend so much time in this game working on a character that you can never share with anyone else. I actually saw forum threads in which people were trying to describe how cool their characters looked to each other. They would try and explain how their particular hair cut really accentuated a certain tattoo. These people are so desperate to share their characters that they were trying to take photos of their TV screens.

In my opinion, none of Fable’s “open ended” game play works in the context of a single player game. Things like owning shops, becoming renowned and impressing people with your sharp dressing just aren’t cool when the world is populated by pre-programmed puppets rather than living people.

Also if you can’t understand why it looks like ass on your HD television here’s a little trick. Fable will sometimes refuse to run in 480p, but you can force it to by going into your dashboard. Open the tray with Fable in the drive and then go into your video settings in your dashboard. Turn off 480p and then turn in back on. Now hold both triggers and click both thumb sticks. This will force your Xbox into 480p mode and you can just close the drive and start Fable. Now if there was a series of buttons you could press in order to make it worth 50 bucks.

I enjoy the game, the only people that seem to be disappointed are people who thought it was going to be the best game ever, or thought it would be like Final Fantasy or something.

Granted, the game is short, which could easily be beaten in 12 hours or so, only if you go straight through the main story, without doing any extra quests. This game isn't much of an RPG, which is a good thing (IMO), it plays a lot like The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, but with a more mature and developed storyline, more in-depth combat & spells, and some RPG elements (like leveling up your Strength, Skill, and/or Will). So its more like an Action/Adventure game with some RPG-esque additions.

The game has some amazing graphics, excellent soundtrack, great voice acting, and some nice responsive controls. My only gripes with the game is that its pretty short (by most RPG standards), there can be some problems with the camera (mainly when your inside of a building, but this can easily be fixed by zooming in/out and/or rotating the camera), and the lack of variety with weaponry and armor.

Overall this is a really good game. Is it worth a purchase? Maybe, if you're into RPGs, Action/Adventure titles, games with well-developed storylines, games where pretty much EVERY decision you make has a consequence, and games with tons of in-depth character customization, then you'll probably enjoy the game. If you're not much into of any of the above, or your skeptical, you might want to borrow it from someone or spend $5 to rent it.

I liked the game, which doesn't necessarily mean you will. This is one of the few games I've ever played where I got completely immersed into the gameworld, meaning I played the game in 10-12 hour sessions. I must say that after beating the game twice (as good and evil), I don't really feel compelled to play it again. Was it worth $50? In my opinion, every bit of the $50 was worth it. Does this mean I'll keep the game forever and ever? Probably not, I'm actually thinking about trading it in when Star Wars: Battlefront is out. Overall this is one of the better games I've played, and I've played a lot of damned games. If I had to give it a score, out of 100%, I'd give it an 85%.

I just started it, and the only complaint I have is the save system. Not being able to save mid-quest is maddening.

For example: Minor Spoiler: In the very first quest (getting your sister a gift) you have the choice between guarding the guy's crates or breaking the barrels. I thought I saved my game there so I could see what happens when you break the boxes, but when I went back and reloaded, it put me back at the beginning of the quest.

I got fable as a gift, being that i canceled my pre order. Anyways, i have played for quite some time now since realese. I haven't gotten very far in the game, but i sure have spent lots of time in it. I was suprised on how un-explorable the places are. The only place where i fell that i can explore is the towns and the guild hall. I thought i would be exploreing places for a while. The discription of the game lead me to belive so. I'm glad they have the teleport ability in there or else i would go nuts. Travling form one town to another by foot is just nutty. All the load times for a little area. In places i been i seen some areas that could have easily been combined. I have no clue why they did this. I was worried about getting lost when i first set out for quest. Then quickly realized i couldn't get lost in this place.

I don't know if they made some AI idiots or not, but i find it annoying. Every thime im using my arrows trying to protect some mindless merchants, they go walking twards the danger. They either end up getting killed by A.) The Bandits/critters/what ever else, or B.) get shot in the back by one of my arrows. So that in turn, forces me to run up there and swing my sword (Giant swords kick ass) around and fight that way. This brings me to another point.

The camera in this game is quite annoying as well. When im fighting guys i would kill one then there are some behind me, so it auto locks (sometimes) to the nearest guy behind me. My character turns around but my camera stays in one spot. It's easy to fix some times, just let go of "L trigger" and press it again. small annoyance like i said, but in the heat of battles its quite fustrating.

There are some more downsides to the game but i need to play more to see if they are more of an annoyance then anything else. The save thing i dislike as well. It's confusing and akward. Thinking, "if i save here, where will i be if i reload?". I rember saving before i did something in town, and when i reloaded i was back at some other spot in town and it was alot eairler then when i saved. Quite confusing.

The good in the game do out weight the bad though. I really like the way your character changes through out the game. Use alot of magic and age fast. Use heavey weapons and get buff. Use ranged attacks more and be thin. You get scars that age and fade with you. Different hair styles and tattos. The armor and weapons seem a little to easy to obtain so early in the game. I alrady have plate boots and leggins, and a full set of bright chainmail. i can afford master weapons already and probly the rest of the plate armor if i find it. The armor in the game looks good though. I love the bulkyness of it all. The weapons are quite nice too, i choose to use the GreatSwords. Bigger the better i think. I swing that bad mo fo around merclessly. There for im buff. I also use a moderate amout of magic so now im a buff grandpa.

I have to say though so far im slightly disapointed with it. I was hopeing for the game to open up more as i went on. The un-explorability is a let down. Besides that it's quite fun, and has a good feel. Those are just my first impressions. So, sofar its good.

I bought it, played through it in a day, and am left a bit miffed. It's as if they like to give you the impression that your actions have more weight then they actually do. After all, it's still an RPG on rails. It's fun, it's short, it didn't live up to the hype. I may be a bit biased since I grabbed an Xbox just so I could give it a run So no, it's not worth my $200.

Fable dissapointed me. I loved Morrowind and True Crime Streets of LA. I prefer open ended games of all sorts, especially one-player rpg's. Fable is an action/adventure on rails. For all that, it is somewhat entertaining..

I finnished it yesturday afternoon. I was quite suprisied on how short it was. I was expecting to beat the game either totaly on the light good side, or the dark evil side. I ended up beating it looking nurtral. I was all wrinkly because of my magic use. Way too short, and way to inear. All the zones were too itty bitty, and i really didn't have much free range of anything. If i even tried going off to do something else, even though there wasn't much else to do. I always had that nagging old man in my head telling me what to do. The story wasn't that great, seems like stuff i have heard before. The "twist" in the game wern't that suprising. I think i was expecting a story to match KotoR, since i did, i was let down.

If you think about it in a way. The "zones" in fable are almost like "zones" in KotoR. I never got lost in fable. And i dont ever recall getting lost in KotoR. Just for the fact that fable pushed you too hard in one direction, that made it feel more linear. KotoR, had the "zones" but they were so wide open without the feeling of being cramped, it felt less like they were pushing you along the way. I always felt i had more freedom in KotoR then Fable.

Im playing through again trying to find a bunch of stuff i didn't find before. Mabey i can get some more enjoyment out of my game. I just can't get the old mans voice outa my head. AHHHHHHHHHH!

Not quite the game I thought it was going to be, I figured more like Morrowind, but it is still entertaining nonetheless. I have been playing since the weekend and have been doing many of the side quests. These side quests are much easier than the ones in MW.

When I do complete it I will go back and play as an evil person.

But is there a replay value to the game....will there be different endings if you are good, evil, or in between?

Yes. He did all the main quests and blew through the story line without doing any side quests, looking for any silver keys, demon doors, etc., didn't marry anyone, etc. If you take the time to do every single thing that every "green dot" NPC asks and do all the silver quests at the guild, the game is much longer than 8 hours.

I shouldn't be forced to do side quest to make the game last a little while. Also, does anyone else think the combat is extremely easy? Just roll around and no one can touch you. Roll strike, strike, strike, roll some more victory. Add that to the resurection vials and it's almost impossible to die unless you really suck the big one. Still it's a decent to good game and I am having fun with it. I love getting horribly drunk and hurling every where.

How the hell you pull that damn sword from the stone!? I just can't seem to get it. Spoiler: I figured since i beat the game deciding to destroy the sword, i would be holy enough to pull the sword from the stone. I really want a awsome weapon since i destroyed that uber sword. I figured that the sword in the stone would be the good heros sword. Has any one pulled it yet? I really want to know how.

I pulled the sword without maxed strength stats on my second playthrough. Apparently, you can pull the sword if you improve your stats a certain amount from your first attempt. I believe it was around 5 physique, 3 toughness and health. You would think that you would only need to max physique since that is your physical strength.

I wish Fable had more customization. I mean, it's cool that your character ages and changes depending on how you play (I found it funny that my character with a lot of health was a hairy beast) but what if I don't want to be caucasian? I want to be able to change the color of my hair and eyes, dye my clothes and armor, buy a scabbard for my sword etc. Ah well, you can still get your character to look pretty damn good. I've taken to going around with any upper body armor to show off my tattoos and manly chest. The combat difficulty is such a joke that I've never even come close to dying even when I'm completely naked.

Anyway, what kind of character did everyone end up with? My first was an evil half will/half warrior who used the harbringer. My second was a good warrior using the murren greathammer.

Okay at the end of the game, I saved before the last battle and did the skip scene through the end credits and it ended there. Then I went back to my saved spot and finished the game but let the credits run through and I was able to continue playing. Anyone else experience this?

I don't own the game, but in one review I read, it mentioned that you could continue playing after finishing the main storyline, so that you can do "extra quests" and just mess around and have fun with your character.

Again, I don't have the game, but if the reviewer was in fact correct, then what you are experiencing would seem to be normal.

Take care.

Microsoft Game Studios has reason to be proud: Today it announced that Fable, the beautiful and expansive Xbox-only RPG developed under the care of Peter Molyneux, has already broken records in its first week of sales.

Fable sold more than 375,000 units during its initial week of release (which translates into about $18.7 million gross). To offer some perspective, in one week that's about half the number of units Knights of the Old Republic sold in its first six months.
That's a lot of games sold in 1 week.

Yep same thing here. I had to sit all the way through the long-ass credits, just to keep playing my character. After beating it the way i did. I just went on a insane killing spree. Took out all my aggression on the poor towns folk.

Thanks. I'll get on that. I had another similar question but it escapes me at the moment.

Derwood, Spoiler: I was completely good and had to donate upwards of 50k in a single shot to get the mace. I believe if you're evil, you do not have to donate as much.

Spoiler: I am also completely good (halo and all) and haven't donated more than 1000 at once. So you have to donate it all at once or can you sit there and donate a bit at a time until they give you the mace?

I doubt this deserves a spoiler tag (we had such a nice thing going, huh?). Anyway, what's with the frying pan? I read somewhere that it's supposed to be the "ultimate weapon". It's not any better than some of the earlier weapons I got. Do I need to use it more or something?

Also, has anyone beaten all of the fist fighters gang rounds? That bastard at Knothole Glade always gets me. He only has to hit you two times, and he can be surprisingly fast sometimes.
