HL2: Is your PC good enough?

http://www.half-life2.org.uk/check.php

Processor: Your processor is fine.
Graphics : You should be able to play in a comfortable resolution such as 800x600, maybie more depending on chipset.
System Memory: You have enough RAM
Operating System: You will be able to play on Win XP.
Architecture: No Problems

Looks to me like the bottleneck most people are going to have is the Vid Card. It's not happy if you have less than a 128MB card.

Time to start looking....

Sapphire 9800 Pro - Around 200 bucks on newegg. If you've got an 8x AGP port, then this is it. This is the best deal you can get.

I would guess, Proc - 2ghz and above
Graphics - 256 mb
System memory - 512 mb
Operating System: Win XP
Architecture: Gonna guess 64-bit. That means NoSoup must have a 64-bit Athlon. And running a 64-bit version of XP? Am I right? Do I get the cyber cookie?

The key point here is the "older chipset such as GeForce 3 Ti". Those cards were the first among the 128 mb flavours of AGP. An ATI 9800 Pro will have 0 issues running HL2 on some damn high resolutions with all graphical settings turned to maximum.

EDIT: Sorry for the double post.

Yeah, this thing seems a bit overkill. A Radeon 9700 Pro or Radeon 9800 Pro is gonna run HL2 damn good. Most people are overestimating the requirements for this game. People may not be able to run it at the maximum requirements, but it'll run good and look good on midrange videocards.

I just clicked on it (I would have earlier, but I'm not on my PC). What a crock of shit! It has processor ratings in megahertz. Give me a damn break! Athlon XPs run at lower clock speeds than Pentium 4s but stilll keep up (and pass) P4's in most tests. Speed means nothing since AMD entered the market years ago.

On top of that, it's asking how much memory your videocard has. Again, who gives a shit? Let me guess: it's gonna tell me that my GeForce FX 5200 LE 256 MB is gonna run HL2 better than a 128 MB Radeon 9800 Pro. Ha ha. This test is pure tomfoolery! I can't believe they'd publish it. I'm not even gonna get started on the RAM amounts, either...can anyone say "Why isn't my PC running it good with 1 GB of PC100 RAM???"

They need to release a demo for this game with a benchmark system. So that way you would know how the game is going to run.

What 64-bit Intel do you have? I didn't even think those chips were out yet? Or do you have a 64-bit version of windows emulated in 32-bit?

No worries here, as I've found a buyer for my 9500 Pro. I'm going to buy a 9800 Pro. Yes, I know, I should get an X800 Pro-whatever. Send me the cash and I would be happy to do that. I spent $300 USD on a GeForce 2 GTS 32MB once. To me that is silly. The 9800 Pro that I will buy will be fine for a year, hopefully. Hell, my 9500 Pro is fine now.

Yeah, I'm definitely gonna have to point to a Tom's Hardware article for this answer.

http://www20.graphics.tomshardware.c...504/index.html

Trust me, the X800 Pro(assuming that's what Krycheck meant ) is THE best performance card that ATI has to offer currently (other than the X800 XT PE (Platinum Edition)). We're talking a 150%-300% increase in performance here over the 9800 Pro. A serious, serious increase, that makes last year seem like it never happened. Any graphics enthusiast remembers the debacle that was the FX series. I mean, seriously, the 5700? It was a damn leafblower. In any case, the answer to your question is, yes, the X800 Pro is a far superior card to a 9800 Pro 256 MB card.

The GeForce 3 is really old. I remember when it came out...I think I was a sophomore or junior in high school! I'm a junior in college now. If you bought a GeForce 3 any time in the past 2.5 years, then you still bought it old. The GeForce 4 series came out in early 2002! The Radeon 9800 Pro is only a little over a year old. It'll last 1.5-2 good years with any game on the market. Will it run it at 1600*1200 with 16x front side antialiasing with 8x anisotropic filtering? No. Will it run the game good and playable? Yes.

The Radeon 9800 series has been out for a good year, year and a half. That's the usual lifespan of a videocard until a new series is released. Ya can't forget that the Radeon 9800 Pro costs $200 now. The worst of the new X800 series is $300, with the Platinum Edition XT costing $600. Yes, six hundred fucking dollars! The Radeon 9800 Pro buyers may not have the best, but they do have the best deal, especially considering they have a card that's gonna last for 1.5-2 years.

Your absolutely right, it was way more than a year ago when I bought it, man time flies. When I bought it though it was brand new, I paid almost 500$ for it. I meant to say that when I first bought it, I thought it was the most amazing thing and that it would last forever, but one year later the GeForce 4 came out, than before you know it ATI starts releasing all their cards, etc. And the price of the 3 drops couple hundred, even more. Its ridiculous. I have to upgrade constantly and I dont have the money to do so. I must admit though, My GeForce 3 still handles some games today. Examples of somewhat recent games that I can run on all settings high include: Splinter Cell 1,2- Unreal 2 - Mafia - Vice City- SoF2 -Ut2003. But then you got games like far cry which I have to reduce to lowest settings to barely get it to work. Man I wish I had money for a Alienware.

Shit naw dude. You're gonna have to fork over some cash to get up to speed on your cache . In all honesty, you can probably spend around 800 bucks and have a PC that's more than ready for HL2. I mean that in all seriousness as well.
