need a 3d card to run a UT2004 server?
Soon, I will have unsupervised access to a T line. I want to turn my work machine into a UT2004 server nights and weekends. My machine is plenty fast, but (since it is for work) it has no 3d card in it.
I know ZERO about running a server. Soooo will this work? Another random thought - you can password protect UT2004 servers, right?

From what I know of game server computers, the video card doesn't matter. All it needs is the processing speed and the fast connection.

no need for a vid card, but if you want your server to be popular, it should be up 24/7

Excellent Clavus! Col. Nutsack is ready and willing to play some UT! May I suggest you call your server "The Filthy Whore" It was the name of my Quake 1/2 servers...would be nice to see her in action once more

Weee, a TFP UT2004 server would be fun. I don't play that much though; I mostly play the mod "red orchestra".

clavus - been a while, buddy!
Here's the quick and dirty of it: You have two server types to select: Listen and Dedicated. A Listen server will allow you to play and watch the action. A Dedicated server will run in the system tray and will only show a text box for commands, etc. Dedicated is good with your particular 2D video system. While you run the server, you can browse with IE for great commands online like Kick.... Anyway, here's how you get in to it: Launch UT2004 Click Host Game Choose Game Type (Assault, Deathmatch, etc). Make sure you click one. Select Maplist Configuration and select the maps you want to serve. Click Game Rules and configure. Click Server Rules and configure those, too. Select Listen or Dedicated server. That's about it. There's obviously a lot of details you can twiddle, but most of the defaults work quite well. Have fun. And let us know what the server name is. Some TFP runnin and gunnin would be cool! |
