Favorite LAN party game?

Myself and a few of my buddies (usually 6-8 total) like to bring all our compu-boxes over to one place and play games all night once every coupla' weeks or so. we're looking for a new game, got any recommendations? in the past we've usually stuck with FPS's like Rogue Spear and Halo or Real Time Strategy like WC3 and Rise of Nations. so what are the best multiplayer PC games out there? doesn't have to be the latest and greatest, just something that will be fun for 7-8 hours of caffeine induced mayhem.

I'll second Halo for ya, since I haven't really experienced many other LAN-capable games. I'll add Starcraft (it's LAN-capable, right?) and Quake to it, too...yes, the original Quake.

Europa Gold, Call of Duty, Startopia, Dungeon Siege, Civ III, Battlefield 1942 (+Mods), Battlefield Vietnam, Monopoly Tycoon, IL-2 Sturmovik : Forgotten Battles and UOX can be fun sometimes too.

CS sucks (in my opinion). I'd say go for Day of Defeat (It's actually a CS mod, but far superior to that inferior game).

I love that game, it's really badass.

You mean it's actually a HALF-LIFE mod. Ick, to think that people actually believe that CS is the original game that is now being modified kind of makes me sick to the stomach.

ANYWAY, as far as LANs go, the way we usually do it is CS for a while, StarCraft sometimes, Warcraft 3 (I always get my ass kicked ), some Halo, a good fighting game with hot chicks (Think: Dead or Alive), some Unreal Tournament (whatever version we can get running on most people's machines)... oh, and Dance Dance Revolution and Smash Brothers hooked up to projectors all night long. Of course, this is a 50ish person LAN...

When we do small ones, we generally stick with CS, Unreal, and StarCraft. Just need to maximize playtime vs. effort

Half-life + the various mods, - counter-strike, - the classic, everyone knows it
day of defeat, - WW2 HL mod, 2 teams, usually a capture objectives type, people die in 1 or 2 hits from most weapons so reasonably relistic
the specialists is good for a laugh,- matrixy jumping around time slow etc, can be played in 3rd person
ricochet is suprisingly fun on LAN, bit like tron, bouncin round on platforms throwing discs
TFC - if you got quite a few people's good, class based capture the flag

Any of the various incarnations of Red alerts good, esspecially if you got a few less numbers, I love Alien vs predator on LAN (the orginal )

UT2k4, Jedi Knight II, WC3, bzFlag, StarCraft, and sometimes something else. I, too, am trying to find other games for us to play. We tried Return to Castle Wolfenstein once and I liked it but it seems there wasn't enough of a concensus to play it again.

We absolutely, do not, ever ever ever ever even THINK about TOUCHING CS. Talk about the most worthlessly overhyped LAN game EVAR.

UT2K4 alone can hold you guys over.

Invasion, Assault, CTF, Bombing Run, Onslaught

That'll easily kill 7-8 hours

Unreal bores the hell outta me sometime, it gets to be like CS, the same thing over and over. I like playing obscure stragagy games and such. Though I crave a huge lan game of Tribes. Some of my friends are addicted to AOE2..and I do mean addicted. As per my favorite lan game, Mechwarrior 4 mercs.

well, i remember playing 16 player halo on 4 large tvs at my school's Rez. that was so much fun. Rockets/Death match/Battle Creek= INSANITY

But back in the day, me and some friends used to play rogue spear constantly. We'd co op, and man that was fun. We used mics/roger wilco, and had an absolute blast. Then we did the same with Ghost Recon, christ that game kicked ass. The misty level in the swamp, not knowing who was who, seeing shapes emerge out of the fog. The river/hill level with the tanks, running for cover as explosions and tracers hit around you. Holding the hil as 20=30 enemies serged forward. Fun stuff.

But, i remember playing GTA1 in the middle of class with like a bunch of other people. That was so fun. Who need shakespeare when you've got Grand theft auto?

Haha, Worms World Party, I have pissed many of friends off with my Super Sheep Skills. My precise aim with the holy hand grenade. Or the coup De grace, prod, just poke em when there close to an edge, ultimate insult, as you see them fall of the edge to the murky depths below. That game is great. TONS of fun for everyone.

I used to love to get Need For Speed: High Stakes setup on the LAN. Kind of an old game, and doesn't run too well on any NT system, but it was hella fun. We'd always have 6 people run the cop cars and two people get the regular cars and we'd work together to try and take em out. Was also fun to setup a knockout tournament and have everyone put a buck in and have it winner take all.

Ahh, good times...
