Single Player RPG's as opposed to MMORG'S
Is it just me or does it seem like ALL OF THE FREAKIN' RPG'S COMING OUT NOW ARE MMORG'S!!!!!
I'm one of those old traditionalists that love single player (or co-op) D&D Core rule RPG'ers like the Baldur's gate series, Fallout, the old Might and Magic series, the first Lands of Lore, (one of my favorites of all time "Planescape Torment" and NeverWinter Nights. I like using Magic and I like having Autopause options! I like tweaking stats and picking feats and skills everytime I level up! I like being able to think my way through a fight and just not slogging it out in games like Microsoft's Dungeon Siege and other crappy "Action RPG's" like it. I can't find my type of game anymore though! I hate MMORG's because there's no end to them and I like to be the hero who destroy's the big baddie and all's fair and well in the land of *insert your favorite RPG city name here*. So where the hell are the good RPG's of yore?!!? Do game companies or their investors think we're all just a bunch of friggin button pushers that just want blood flying everywhere and an enemy to slaughter every micro-second!?!? WELL WE'RE NOT! Some of us like to actually...<GASP>...use our MINDS!!! The last game that came out that tried to recapture the style that I like was "Temple of Elemental Evil". It was fun for quite awhile until you got to the 2nd level of the temple. At that point, it was just a straight up dungeon delver and god forbid you were of good alignment because you couldn't take any of the quests from some of the dungeon denizens. SO...after being excited for the first 20 hours of so...it kinda lost it's punch. So now i'm at a loss because everything is either an MMORG or an action/RPG which is bullcrap. Does anybody else feel the way I do!?!? Last edited by Gjefflin; 06-18-2004 at 12:31 PM.. |

I like MMORPGs, but single-player RPGs are just as fun. There's something cool about having your own little world. Especially like Morrowind. Good stuff.

Now...as far as Jade Empire and Fable is concerned...I don't have an Xbox and they're not out on PC. I'm not really a "console" person. Anything on the PC that you've played that i'm leaving out that's coming out soon other then KOTOR 2? |

I did see the info on The Bard's tale but it also seems to be turning out not like the standard D&D campaign. It's more action oriented then RPG oriented AND...there's no character selection which is one of my favorite parts of an RPG is creating my own special character and then sending them out into the world. In The Bard's Tale...as the title says........you're a bard. :P |

For single player RPGs, the world knows no finer than Morrowind. You have nearly complete freedom on a very large continent. Follow the main quest if you like, or not. Join a religious faction and do holy quests, or not. Join a great house or a guild and take over, or not. Want to be a vampire or a werewolf? Go for it! The beauty of this game is that you can do whatever the hell you want -- but never without consequences. The absolute plethora of mods available (over 3000 on one website alone) will make sure you don't get bored after you've done everything there is to do, although doing everything would probably take you a very, very long time. Supposedly, there is a mod being released soon that will add rougly 4000 new quests, marriages, pregnancy, and a ton of new features to the game. This is just one mod.
I really recommend you pick this game up -- rougly $30 for the Game of the Year edition, which comes with the expansions Tribunal and Bloodmoon, a must have to really enjoy everything Morrowind has to offer. |

I haven't played Morriwind for quite awhile now and am still tempted on a regular basis to go back to playing it. But it is just too damn addictive and I know that it'll just eat up all my free time if I start playing it again.
But it is a great game and I heavily recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind losing several months of their lives. |

Don't limit yourself to straight RPG's!
We've had a couple sub-par years for games, and this upcoming quarter looks like it's what we've been waiting for. Listen to all of this: - KOTOR 2 - Fable - Jade Empire - World of Warcraft - Everquest 2 - Doom 3 - Half-Life 2 - GTA: San Andreas - Rome: Total War - Kingdom Hearts 2 - The Sims 2 - The Matrix Online Not to forget the Nintendo DS, and an outside chance at the Sony PSP. That's 12 possible five star games, even if only half are good, that SIX five star games in 3 months.

I tried Warcraft and hated it. I played Everquest and became so engrossed with it...it took over my life so I can't go back to that again. I have no self control. hehehehe. Jade Empire is only on the Xbox as is Fable. Don't do consoles because i'm one of those type of people that need dual imput. I have to watch TV while playing PC games. Can't do that with a console. (Grin) Half Life 2...perhaps. I'll probably get that. I saw the trailer and dug it. But I didn't like the first one. GTA...driving game. Never happen. Rome...sim game. Hate 'em. Kingdom Hearts 2...hated the first one. Sims 2? Sim game..won't do it. Matrix Online? MMORG...won't do it. |

For an extremely quirky RPG of sorts, with decidedly unpretentious graphics, try http://kingdomofloathing.com
While it's online, it's not truly MM in that you don't have a lot of direct interaction with other players. More like a MUD. It limits your per-day play to an extent as well. For best server performance, avoid it from 9pm-10:30pm Pacific time. |

I liked most MMORPGs but alot of them are better now than they were when EQ came out. I loved EQ when it first started there was so much to see and so many quests. ( alot were broken heh) but still. I like the expansion posibilities . I think thats why I am looking forward to WoW . As for single player. KOTOR was fantastic. definately a must play. looking forward to Kotor 2 even though not going to be the same company. Jade Empire looks very promising. As does Half life 2. tons of other games coming that look interesting but will have to wait to see what the outcome is.
