Oh, and Aeris too.

Star Control 2, when you show the Yehat the fact that the Shofixti have returned and the Yehat realize they've been fighting an injust war for terrible reasons and decide to rise up against the empire -- awesome.
Fallout 2, when you get back to your village with the G.E.C.K. at last only to be too late.
Skies of Arcadia...lots of things. It was almost as well-written as FF7. When you get back to Pirates Island to find your family's been taken, when you rescue them from the arena, the time you have to fight Ramirez and lose, when you're running from Galcian on the train -- awesome game. Anyone who has a GC should check out SoA Legends, if you didn't get it for the DC.
Finally Shenmue and Shenmue 2, again, just about everything. When you rescue your gf and ride home on your motorcycle, when the man who killed your father gets away, when all the money you worked for goes missing and you don't know what you're going to do, and when you realize you're up against 60 guys and your friend comes and the two of you have to fight them all together...awesome!
Great thread idea.

At the end of Hitman:Silent Asassin, you kill the villain, your best friend dies, and you're forced to leave your home forever, all within twenty seconds of each other. When 47 walks off into the distance with that super-pissed look on his face, realizing that the whole world's rejected him... well I do get a little lump in my throat..

I agree that Final Fantasy X and the Max Payne stories were just quite sad.

Still playing Mafia so haven't seen the ending yet, but wasn't too surprised when I read the spoiler; the storytelling in Mafia is excellent and the sad, realistic ending fits the bill.

IMO, you get loads more value out of MMORPGs.

I played FF11 for like 5 straight months and I still didn't get halfway through it. I've NEVER played any RPG for that long ever.

Even games like Chrono Trigger that had awesome replay value.. I don't think I ever spent more than a month playing it. Singler player RPGs are good if you just want a short game (compared to MMORPGs) that you can enjoy and be done with within a few weeks. MMORPGs almost always have something new.

40 hour quest your first time through.. and each time after that (since you know everything) is shorter. If you have New Game+, then it's 10x as short.

Only time I got emotional playing a game was the 2nd british mission in Call of Duty, when that dramatic music started playing near the end of the German counter-attack. I don't know, it was just THE right time for it.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Sweet game that didn't even HAVE an ending. I felt SO ripped off.

I also have to agree with the FF7 Aeris scene, as well as Crono's death.

I also remember back in day when my characters in Final Fastasy 1 (NES) "grew up". I felt like I'd really accomplished something, that I'd somehow evolved with my characters

Jesus, how can I forget that.
One more occasion I have to add: The last mission, where you need to pretect a fleet mixed military/civilian ships to the jump node before the GTVA could seal it up. The fight was long and difficult. Every few minutes a new fleet of shivan capital ships would jump in on you. Then 15min into that mission, you are suppose to be 2 clicks away from the jump node (if you havnt read the storyline), then suddenly you superior briefs you on the intercom "This star has just turned supernova, you have 1 minute to get out of there" Suddenly everything ties in, how the ancients where destroyed, and why where you fighting shivans in the gas field. However after realizing all that, you make a run for it. Diverting all power into the engieen and hitting the afterburner. Time was counting down, and you are getting closer than ever. Then right before you could get to the node. Time counts down to 0, the cut sceen sets in. Awesome, awesome stuff.

All the units have been lost, all that is left is one peon. He got lost somehow gathering wood in the near-by forest, while his whole base was destroyed by a swarm of Chimaeras, and Mountain Giants. All the gold is gone, but plenty of lumber remains. The peon gets a small prayer from a dying shaman lying on the floor. He picks up his pick, and runs towards the enemy’s base. He follows the tracks from the mountain giants, and his pace quickens as the foot prints begin to fade. Run little peon run. Through the vast fields he runs, charging ever so valiantly towards the enemy’s strong hold. There is a small clearing in the forest. The peon can barely make out what is there, the fog is thick. He pushes onwards, now the base is in site, charge little peon CHARGE! Boulders being flung from every direction! He dodges left, and then right, he can see the Hero in front of him. A Mountain Giant steps in the way. The peon runs underneath his legs. He raises his pick in one valiant effort to destroy the hero! Running at the hero as fast as he can, a giant log swings in front of him. Barreling down upon him, connecting with a smash! The heroic peon falls. Mockingly the Demon Hunter stands above him laughing. The peon gives him a small smile and released his grip from his pick, joining the rest of the thousands of peons in the other world. Wondering why the battle is not over, the Demon Hunter realizes there is now a hidden base some where. Damn those Orc. Now the search begins for the hidden base, muhaha, ohh wait... what do you mean I'll be reviled to my opponent?! aww man.

Maybe I exaggerated a little bit , but that game can get pretty emotional.

These are my picks:

-FFVII: Of course, Aeris's death scene.

-FFVIII: The whole outer space thing. With Squall having to save Rinoa from perpetual freefall. Especially when they're in eachother's arms floating in space. Intense.

-FFIX: At the very end when Zidane comes out from under the cloak and Dagger/Garnet runs to him and pounds on his chest with her fist while crying because she thought he was dead.

-FFX: At the end, when Yuna is at the edge of pier whistling with all her might. The poor dear

-Xenogears: Well, a lot of it is intense. But I'd have to say the anime scenes with Elly, and on the last disk where we go inside of Fei's head.

-FFXI: Whenver I die and freaking loose 500+ exp! ARRGG!

Gimmie a break. Diablo 2, when you return to Tristram. It is very sad cause Griswald is a zombie and everyone but Cain is dead. I know I felt a sinking feeling in my heart. But when you find Wirt dead, you're so happy that little bastard died! That swing of emotion was great.

**Spoiler**

The last cinematic scene in the first Diablo was pretty distrubing for me. The entire hell level was slightly distrubing with bodies everywhere being tortured, then you have this huge battle to beat Diablo himself. When the fight is over and you're victoriously watching the final cinematic, you see your warrior pick up the soul stone where Diablo has been trapped and just as you're coming down from the intense battle, the warrior shoves the stone through his own skull. It completely caught me off gaurd and disturbed me for a few days. I still feel those disturbed emotions when I think about it, that's great game design.

But after reading this thread it seems I gotta pick up FF VII and FF VIII.

When you play that chick (Jill I think?) and your in the room with the shotgun on the wall and after you pick it up and are about to leave the ceiling starts coming down on you, becuase picking up the shotgun set off a trap, you think "oh crap im going to die".. then out of no where barry rushes in and saves you.

I only picked the chick to play that game becuase she starts with a pistol and the guy (Chris) doesn't

Man, that for me was the first time in my life I'd ever had a plot twist thrown at me like that - it was addicting, to say the least. It was all the more of an accomplishment after going through that damn maze castle.

*snaps* for reminding me of this one.

Don't forget when General Leo dies. I tried in every damn way to save him, but in the end Kefka got him every time.

Also, numerous things from Fallout and Fallout 2. I nearly died laughing when a Rad-Scorpion cricitically missed me and hit itself in the leg, killing it . On the other hand, when I lost dogmeat, it was the opposite - it was depressing, because I couldn't just load [I saved over my earlier save accidently after dogmeat died]. However, my happiness returned when I saw dogmeat in Fallout 2 [hidden location], and I again laughed a lot when I saw the Holy Grail secret scene. Overall, though, I had many emotional responses throughout the duration of the two games.

[In conclusion ] All emotions were present, though mostly at different times.

PS I totally agree about the thing with yoshi. Poor guy, getting dumped every time just to save Mario!
