Free 14-Day Star Wars Galaxies Trial

The game hasn't gotten great reviews, but hey, it's free and could burn away two weeks of free time

It could burn two weeks of free time just in the download! 1.9 Gigs! You have to activate by 11:59 PM (PST) on July 31 to get the free two weeks -- I'm not sure I'll have finished by then!
Seriously, thanks for the heads up, but I resisted this game until now and I think if I can get past this I'll be free of it. Addiction to MMORPGs kills.

I played this game last summer. I got a master tailor on one server, and almost master bounty hunter on another server.
However, after you get master, there's *nothing* to do. PvP was horrible, worse than any graphical online game I've ever played. It's just target, and start attacking. Absolutely no tactics. Yet, it was easily the best social game ever. The amount of emotes/moves was amazing, and I never spent so much time actually role playing. If you can find a good group of role players, it can be a blast. Especially getting lap dances in the cantina

I played the game last summer and had been following it very closely in its development for about 2 years...and I was disappointed with the end product. The promised so much, and only delivered about half of that. However, I think I will give the game a second chance when the expansion is released. For those that haven't played it, now wouldn't be too bad of a time to do it play because they have released some nice new stuff. Like land vehicles, pets, and city management stuff. All of which should have been out at release, but what can you do?

Ah, Star Wars Galaxies....
I actually wasted enough of my life on that game to unlock a Jedi... I don't think I'll ever get over the utter dissappointment of unlocking it. Quite possibly the lamest thing ever, especially after all the "work" that went into it...

For those of you unfamiliar with SWG, you (at least at that time) unlocked a Jedi by Mastering certain professions. Some of the professions were told to you via a "Holocron" - but never the last. So, after mastering 17 Professions, I finally unlocked my Force Sensitive Slot. As you can imagine, I was quite adept at playing the game, as it takes the casual gamer 3-5 months to master a single profession. Once I unlocked, you create your Jedi - it is a completely different charactor creation screen, with glowing symbols and the like. Once created, you start with a lightsabre crafting tool and normal clothes. Once you have made a training sabre (which blows, but it's what you have to start out with) After aquiring the necessary tools to make a higher generation sabre (Ie Crystals or Krayt Pearls) you use the sabre crafting tool to make you next sabre. However - when you do so, a subcomponent of the next higher gen saber is the saber below it. So, if you want a 4th Gen Saber, you need a 3rd Gen, to get a 3rd Gen, you need a secong Gen, ect. Each saber has millions upon millions of resources put into it, and your sabre crafting skill doesn't really increase, so critical failures are far too common, leaving you creditless & frustrated. The higher gen Lightsabers (I had a couple made of all Krayt Pearls) were very high damage, and low speed. However, they did kinetic damage, and the armor out there is usually highly kinetic resistant, so it did little to no damage in PvP against armored targets. In PvE, however, Jedi Owned. All of the Jedi Moves are cloned from the other professions (Fencer, Heavy Swordsman, Pikesman) All of your "Force" Powers are just extensions of that, very poorly implemented. For Instance, if I did Force Throw or whatever it was called, it would take the type & damage of the weapon I was holding, and apply it to the target. If done with a lightsaber, kinetic armor would block it. If I was holding a stun baton, it would do stun damage, ect. There is no Jedi-specific content, all moves/powers were just leeched from the other professions with slightly different animation. If you were to aquire Master, be it light or dark, you still would have the same powers. Depending on the path that you chose, you get them in a different order, but the powers would eventually be the same, nonetheless. As far as actual gameplay goes.... To gain levels, you must aquire "Jedi" XP. Jedi XP is granted at 10% of what the normal XP is, but capped. To give you an idea, to master Jedi it would be the equivalent of mastering a combat profession just under 740 times... that's not a typo, that's 740 times. Hard-core? You Bet. I thought it would be the ultimate challenge, but the problem lies within the fact that you only have 3 lives until permadeath. Even this wouldn't be a problem, but if the server crashes, you go LD, not to mention the numerous bugs/exploits out there it still counts. If you have played SWG you know that this is neigh impossible to do. To top it all off, Jedi is basically the most reduntant, boring class to play. Your typical SWG Session - 1) Log In 2) Change Title... Check title, if bugged, wait for next server restart & try again tomorrow.... 3) Get fully buffed 4) Slap on some armor 5) Slay Enemies for ridiculously miniscule amounts of XP, in the middle of nowhere, hoping noone finds you. The Jedi is excellent at PvE, but you can't fight anything challenging, as if something goes wrong, you only have 3 lives. If you are spotted, you are attackable by anyone for 5 minutes after you last used your lightsaber ( and it's the ONLY weapon, other than the CDEFs, that Jedi are certified for) Also, if you are spotted, your visibility increases and you are then placed on the BH terminals, where the Bounty Hunters and Point and Click their way out to you via their tracking droids and utterly destroy you from 15m away, since you can only swing your glowing baseball bat (kinetic damage) up to 7 m. When SWG first came out, I thought it was the best game ever... but with the advent of the holocrons and then the Jedi, it ruined it all. When I first got my Jedi, I didn't have very high expectations, but even then was completely dissappointed. The worst part is, Those that exploited were able to obtain Jedi Master in a matter of days while afk grinding, whereas anyone that actually does it the right way it would most likely take near a year, providing you play the game A LOT.

I just posted this in case other people were interested in SWG and didn't want to pay to try.
