Final Fantasy 7 VS Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time ("Best. Game. Ever." contest)

http://www.GameFAQs.com

THE match that most everyone's bracket in this contest depends on is today. Widely considered to be icons in the gaming world, Final Fantasy 7 and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time collide in the championship of the 32-64 Bit Division. I loved both games, but due to the fact I can still enjoy FF7, I have to vote for it. I also have it winning my bracket though, so that helps reassure my vote for it, heh. Either way though, either game deserves to win in my book.

Let's hear it from you guys and gals: who's gettin' your vote?

bookerV 06-02-2004 07:22 AM

FF7 owns...

Ace_O_Spades 06-02-2004 07:30 AM

I voted FF7

sooooo good

AngelicVampire 06-02-2004 07:48 AM

MGS ran up against FF7? WTF? How is this working... they are comparing games that cannot be compared, MGS != FF7, both are excellent games and truly deserve 10/10, however to say one is better than the other... apples and ferraris...

H12 06-02-2004 07:52 AM

Yeah, that saddened me too; that's the way it goes sometimes though. Also LoZ:OoT VS Goldeneye wasn't too easy on my eyes, either. Seeding sucks at times.

Lasereth 06-02-2004 08:01 AM

FF7 gets my vote. Both are great games, but I did enjoy FF7 more.

phredgreen 06-02-2004 08:16 AM

like i've said elsewhere, final fantasy seven is one of the main reasons the playstation became as popular as it did. that game made the console.

DownwardSpiral 06-02-2004 10:32 AM

Seeing as Final Fantasy VII is my favorite game of all time hands down, yeah I'm gonna vote for it.

bltzkriegmcanon 06-02-2004 10:48 AM

I'm once again split because I don't think this contest is entirely fair. The games that are pitted against each other are in entirely different genres and some are sleepers that no one has ever heard of, while others are among the most popular games ever. That's right. I emphasize popular because some of the games that are in the top 16 are mega-popular, but still not that immensely great, nor are they even close to the supposed "Best.Game.Ever" status that GameFaqs means to promote. Between the two games posted, I can't, with good conscience say that either game is better than the other.

SiNai 06-02-2004 10:49 AM

I thoroughly enjoyed both, but Ocarina of Time gets my vote.

NeverBorn 06-02-2004 12:34 PM

I think all those polls gamefaqs run are overrun by fanboys. They're all full of shit

SecretMethod70 06-02-2004 12:59 PM

mwahaha, my plans are coming into fruition. FFVII all the way. As far as I can tell the only real competition it will have after this match is Starcraft.

I agree that it's not terribly fair for sleeper games to face popular games...but then again, this is a single website's popularity contest that's wearing a mask that says "Best. Game. Ever.", so how fair would it be for many popular games to be eliminated in the first and second rounds? You can't really only accept votes from people who's played both games extensively, so you can't expect it to be that way, however nice that would be.

The seedings were based on a nomination system that had submissions sent in from anybody who wanted to be heard. It can't be helped that Gunstar Heroes got out-nominated by LoZ:LttP, Panzer Dragoon Saga got the short end of the stick compared to Goldeneye, Punch-Out and Megaman 2 didn't get enough nominations to get into the tourny at all, or any other cases.

Slayer 06-02-2004 02:32 PM

This is pretty hard to choose. I like both game but FF7 a little bit more so I voted for FF7.

absolutely, no contest. OoT was actually a big let down for me. just my opinion. FFVII was one of the greatest games ever.

MrFlux 06-02-2004 04:13 PM

FF7 is my favourite PS1 game ever. If they remade the exact same game for the PS2 (but with better graphics) I'd probably buy a PS2 to play it even though I've played the original one too many times to count. Gets my vote.

Why remake it when they could make a sequel for it already? Hell, they made one for FFX...so why NOT one for the most legendary game Square's ever made?

they might not want to mess it up as a lot of sequels tend to do. they might just not want to mess with it for this reason. i would love a sequel though.

H12 06-02-2004 05:35 PM

Yeah, true, but if that's the case, why bother making a movie-sequel to it? If they don't make a game-sequel for it to ensure that its iconic status stays, then I wish they wouldn't make a movie-sequel either.

Ace_O_Spades 06-02-2004 05:41 PM

Wow, this one isnt as close as i thought it would be.

oh well, GO ff7!

That's half the reason on the dot. Square-Enix says they don't want to risk making a game that players wouldn't enjoy as a sequel to FF7. In other words, they don't want to risk fucking up possibly their greatest game. The other half is money and people -- they feel right now that it would take way too much money and resources to produce a FF7 sequel right now.

That being said, I believe with near certainty that there will be a sequel to FF7 in the future. I really hope I'm right...Advent Children doesn't look too hot right now.

I agree.

Just to inform the general public here at TFP, FF7 won by about 7,000 votes...not quite as close a match as many of us had thought.

bundy 06-03-2004 11:22 PM

well, i totally expected FF7 to win this one... but i just wanted to throw a little weight behind Zelda... its always been good to me.

Fremen 06-03-2004 11:35 PM

So, what genre is FF7, and what is it about?

Quite true, but that doesn't answer me question, laddie buck. ;)

:D Good one.

Seriously, give me a hint. ;)

SecretMethod70 06-05-2004 04:56 PM

FF7 is an RPG (FF = Final Fantasy)

Describing what it's about, however, is a MUCH more difficult task. It's a VERY complicated story which I'll leave to someone else to attempt and describe it without giving away any of the awesome twists.

Ace_O_Spades 06-05-2004 06:49 PM

I cant give away the story, basically it is the story of a revolutionary force trying to prevent the destruction of the earth, fighting an unseen foe who is like a puppet master over a massive corporation who has the world by the balls.

Before it is over, everyone involved questions who they are and how they fit in the grand scheme of the world.

[edit]

not what i thought it was... nm

Omar12 06-05-2004 07:04 PM

I have to go with FF7.
This game brought attention to RPG games to a lot of people.

Fremen 06-05-2004 07:51 PM

Thanks, SM70 and Ace. :)

Was it a 1 player or multiple player game?
I Googled it but couldn't find out.

H12 06-05-2004 08:01 PM

'Twas single-player, Fremen. Pretty sweet game though; if you're into RPG's, check it out sometime (this is coming from someone who's only played four RPG's that I ever liked, so I think you'll have a good chance of diggin' it).

Fremen 06-05-2004 09:57 PM

Much appreciated, H12.
The only rpg's I've played are Paper Mario and Quest64.
It's not my favorite style, but it's enjoyable, every once in a while.
Thanks, guys.

Ace_O_Spades 06-06-2004 06:19 AM

Quest64... LOVED that game!

haha, wow that brings back memories

H12 06-06-2004 07:11 AM

Heh, for as shitty reviews as it got, I had forgotten how sadly entertaining Quest 64 was. For me, it was one of those games that I wasn't meant to enjoy, yet I did.

Fremen 06-06-2004 12:43 PM

The only real complaint about Quest64 I had was all the monotonous running you had to do until you were able to warp from town to town.

Honestly, that sounds like every RPG ever.

Well, that sucks.

You sure they're as annoying as the Princes' footsteps that went the same pitter-patter, pitter-patter, no matter what surface he was running across, with the same cloud of dust? :D
