PC gaming or Console gaming?

Alright everyone. Which do you prefer? PC gaming or Console (ie: X-Box, PS2...etc)

I prefer PC gaming because I like to watch TV at the same time while playing a game. Can't do that with a console.

What do you guys think?

Rdr4evr 05-22-2004 12:13 PM

Thats a tough one, I play both PC and Gamecube. If I had to choose though, it would probably be more PC. The only problem is having to upgrade the damn thing so often.

Gjefflin 05-22-2004 12:16 PM

You have a point about the pc. I spent over 2k this past X-mas getting a state of the art box.

Lasereth 05-22-2004 12:33 PM

This question has been answered a hundred times on TFP, but may as well answer it again!

PC gaming and console gaming have advantages and disadvantages over each other. I simply play both to get the best of both worlds. Taking sides or playing only one or the other simply limits the gaming experience.

The sad thing is, its not state of the art anymore :(.

Gjefflin 05-22-2004 01:13 PM

Yeah...tell me about it. But my VID CARD IS!!! :D It's the new ATI RADEON 9800 XT AGP 256 mb DDR Video Graphics Card !! hehehehe.

Nope, the Radeon X800 Pro and GeForce 6800 came out a few days ago. Your card isn't top of the line anymore. By the looks of the Radeon X800, in some games, the X800 beats out the 9800XT by 300%. Leave it up to NVIDIA and ATI to provide for the gamers. :)

-Lasereth

Speed_Gibson 05-22-2004 02:46 PM

has to be PC gaming for me; no televsion here and I do not want one anytime soon (or to be more specific this lifetime)
edit: just thought of the thread near this one currently and if there is an easy way that I can properly use my 21" CRT and ATI AIW 7500 card for a console then I would strongly consider buying one.

BASTARDS!!! Well....hmm....I'll wait until the benchmarks to see how true this is. Both Nvidia and ATI come out with stuff all the time but most of the time their boasting isn't what it turns out to be when it's all benchmarked.

I'm not bullshitting you. I don't bullshit anyone about videocards, and I can say with 100% confidence that ATI and NVIDIA just released new videocards that are two-to-three times faster than a Radeon 9800XT. In some cases, these cards are five times faster than a Radeon 9700 Pro.

They are the ATI Radeon X800 XT and the NVIDIA GeForce 6 6800 Ultra. Visit this thread if ya want more info:

People are calling these videocards the biggest increase in performance since the old 3DFX Voodoo to Voodoo 2 days. This is a milestone in computer hardware, trust me. :)

sounds like they would be a huuuuuge jump from an AIW 7500, not to mention a huge bite on my wallet.
would be nice to be able to play Half Life smoothly and not experience 'issues' like my current card always has transtioning whenever I try it.

BigGov 05-22-2004 06:48 PM

Speed_Gibson, you can easily hook up a console to a computer monitor (and get a very nice picture in the process).

The hardest part is finding one part. An S-Video to VGA converter. The only other thing besides the console you need is a S-Video cable for that specific console. After that you're good to go :)

thank you for the information. I did see the other thread that asked that specific question, but it did not grab my undivided attention as my latest consoles are an Atari 7800 and NES 8-bit system. Currently I would rather spend the money on a new controller for the 7800 rather than a newer console system, but I am open to the idea of hving a PS/X-box/etc.

Arg. Oh well...behind the 8 ball again. My state of the art card only lasted 6 months. But....oh well. I think that's probably always going to be the case. I think that with today's software and games though...i'm still gonna be good with what I have for quite some time. And THAT gives me some happy respite.

Cynthetiq 05-22-2004 08:31 PM

i don't have time to configure download drivers...

because i have limited play time.. i go console.

Gman 05-22-2004 09:44 PM

Console.

Maybe it's my old-schoolness, but nothing beats having a controller in your hand to play a game.

Nothing.

Oh, if you're just playing anything pre-Sega Saturn/PS1 it would be much, MUCH easier just to buy a little $10 control pad and get some emulators. It'll run faster, give you more control, and in some cases even new gameplay choices. Nothing beats the ability to play Tecmo Super Bowl online :)

are you gonna back it up or just leave it like that? because I'm sure Gjefflin could have flipped a coin to come up with a similar answer :)

Gjefflin 05-23-2004 07:48 PM

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Well....actually..no matter what anyone answers, my favorite will always be PC gaming. I just love the double stimulation of playing a game and watching TV at the same time.

bbbbbb555 05-23-2004 09:55 PM

pc games are way better, especially for a first person shooter. they are almost impossible for me to control on the ps2, but maybe i am retarded.

BigGov 05-23-2004 10:03 PM

Fight Night 2004, very difficult to control without two joysticks.

SOCOM 2, a great FPS that can be played just as well as any computer FPS. (Personally my favorite "realistic" FPS out there).

NHL 2004, just not as much fun without the analog control Next-Gen consoles can provide.

Tecmo Super Bowl. Just isn't the same without the old NES controller.

No, you are not retarded, you are just extremely close-minded :)

I used to be the same way, I mean, shit, without a mouse? Who are you fucking kidding? But after playing Halo and Metroid Prime I can safely say that FPS's on a console are not a bad thing, I feel like an idiot for being so narrow-minded about it before.

EDIT: I still think FPS's are better on PC but they're still great on consoles

Chingal0 05-24-2004 01:08 AM

I play RPG's on console, and idealy the rest on PC. Altho, my PC is a pile so I rarely get to experience all the graphical quality of the new games, so I need to resort to console to woo me with the ooohs and aahhs of technicolor.

Edit: PC's! PC's have WoW! Yayayay!

Hrothgar 05-24-2004 01:42 AM

I prefer PC's because my favorite genres are MMORPGS and FPS and for me nothing beats good ole WASD and mouse for FPS and WOW and EQ2 are coming to PC.

killklaus 05-24-2004 02:05 AM

Thats a tough choice, I used to lean towards consoles because they had a greater variety of games (pc revolve around RTS, FPS and some spin-off of the D&D boards). After all the local arcades died out, I started to enjoy the competition online (sc and cs). After a couple years of playing online, I just got sick of all the cheaters, brats and punks. Now I prefer to play multiplayer games with people I know.

I mostly play RPG's but I occassionally play FPS's as well. And I use the mouse to turn and the arrow keys to move. And yeah...perhaps it's cause i'm use to it but the joystick just seems harder to use.

heccubusiv 05-24-2004 07:29 PM

since i have a playstation controller, and x-box controller for my pc, and my pc is faster and has a lot better of a video card then the x-box or anything else will for a while, I have to choose pc gaming but console gaming still has a bigger variety of games

jahmdir 05-24-2004 08:27 PM

Well to add a couple of things that might have been said before.

PC games are good for some genres. FPS and RTS games come to mind. There are some good FPS games for consoles (Halo for example) but I don't think I would like to play Battlefield on a console, or Command and Conquer either.

Consoles. Much more comfortable. Can recline on the couch and play with a comfortable controller. Great for Japanese Style RPGs, Driving Games, and Platformers just to name a few.

I personally own all 4 (yes 4 I include the dreamcast still) of the consoles and I have a computer that has not been unable to play games at high quality at 1600x1200 even though its almost two years old now.

One thing I would like to say. Some people I know like to say that consoles look better and run faster than any computer game... while this may be true in part they don't seem to understand that even HDTV quality games don't run at the resolutions that I play games on my PC. The PC kicks the consoles ass in terms of power but costs accordingly.

matt211 05-24-2004 08:52 PM

Consoles all the way. PCs are really expensive to keep up to date. Consoles have a better fun to dollar ratio than PCs.

Plus consoles have more of the games I like to play like Japanese RPGs and fighting games.
That's why I own every major console released since the playstation (including handhelds) and I rarely play games on my PC and mostly use it for
web-browsing.

Totally true!!!! Just an example...I can't WAIT to play Doom3 that's coming out this year and it's coming out for the PC!!!! AND...it's supposedly using the next Gen graphics for the new cards out nowadays. I've seen screenshots and it looks pretty damn awesome!

CDW is selling the X800 XT for $459. Way fucking lower than any other sellers listed on Nextag, which sell from between $652-$790. I wonder if it's a mistake and is mislabeled.

Console gaming is for children. PC gaming is infinitely superior in terms of graphics and multiplayer over the internet.

That's bullshit. Console games are not for children. The only reason children play them is because they can't reach a keyboard.

All three console systems have online capabilities now, so that aspect isn't a disadvantage. The only graphical aspect that's inferior to PC games is the resolution. Console games have amazing graphics even when compared to PC games. Yes, the resolution is low, but everything else is superb.

CDW has a 3 out of 10 rating on www.resellerratings.com even after 280 people reviewed them. I wouldn't buy a ribbon cable from a 3 out of 10 company, much less a $400 videocard. :)

I don't quite agree with this. I think that Console games seem to be more "cartoony" then PC games. If you compare Console RPG's to PC RPG's...the games are just graphically more adult then the games on the consoles.
