Let's talk about the N64 Castlevania games...
Specifically because I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only freak in the entire world who absolutely loved them. (Flame war in 5... 4... 3.. 2.. oh wait, this is TFP.) I recall back around when the first Castlevania 64 came out, I rented it one Saturday morn on a whim. I started playing and my buddy happened to drop by as I was wandering around the first level. He sat down, started watching, and neither of us moved until late that afternoon when I finally beat it. I remember these two chicks dropped by and tried to hang out with us, but we wouldn't budge. That's how into it we were.
Then I read some reviews of it a couple weeks later and I'm totally blown away. People hail it as the worst 3D conversion ever. Total crap. Worst N64 game ever. What?? Granted the animation was pretty bad and the controls were wack at times, but was that enough to ruin the whole game? So please reassure me I'm not crazy here, peeps. Does anybody, anybody at all other than me and my buddy here like this game and its sequel, Legacy of Darkness? I suppose I should list some reasons why I liked it: - The whip in 3D was just sweet - Skeletons, giant skeletons, skeletons on frickin' motorbikes. - Some of the best-ever bosses in a 3D platformer (the giant bull in the castle center comes to mind--his skin and muscles fall off as you fight him) - Some great level design (and some not-so-great, granted) - Creepy, mysterious atmosphere. Feels more like Castlevania than any other Castlevania game I've played - Pretty damn hard on hard mode - Good supporting characters - Frankenstein has a chain saw!
