city of heroes signup question

I have decided to buy this game. However, I'm confused on something. The box states that the first 30 days are free, and I know you can buy timecards for this game. My question is do I need an initial credit card number to register? I do not have one, so I need to know before I buy.

Thanks!

erion 05-17-2004 09:21 AM

You will need either a subscription card or credit card to gain access to the game.

BigGov 05-17-2004 10:08 AM

Yes, you do, damn Ncsoft. If you bought the game it should just include a little timecard for one month, but no, that would be too easy.

Shokan 05-18-2004 07:42 AM

So even though the box says the first 30 days are free, I still need to put down a credit card number?

That is stupid.

BigGov 05-18-2004 01:08 PM

Yup.

Or purchase a game card.

Kadath 05-18-2004 04:11 PM

Not atypical. That was they can start billing you the minute your free time ends.

Shokan 05-19-2004 03:48 AM

Doesn't a game card come with the game? Hence, the first 30 days free?

BigGov 05-19-2004 10:34 AM

Nope.

A game card is $35 for two months, sold separately.

You do receive a free month when you punch in a code or a number however.

Shokan 05-19-2004 01:57 PM

I guess I'm asking if a code comes included with the game?

BigGov 05-19-2004 02:05 PM

Nope.

If you purchase the game only you will get home, install the program, register for PlayNC, then try to play the game and get pissed off when it won't activate your account until you enter a credit card number or a 60-day game card number (purchased separately at stores like Best Buy)

I refuse to buy games that require you to pay monthly fees. It is BS that you plop down 50$ for a game then have to pay fees for the privlage to play a game you already paid for.

Shokan 05-19-2004 05:44 PM

Jimmy4 - Thanks a bunch.

Then don't.

Considering that you get 30 days of play-time by purchasing CoH (a $15 value) you are essentially only paying $35 for the game. The $15 monthly fee is completely justified because of the enormous costs of maintaining a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG). You seem to forget that there are servers, hugely expensive bandwidth, 24/7 customer service reps, and teams of coders working on adding to the game as you play it. The first free major update is due within a month and is funded by a part of said monthly fees.

If monthly fees offend you, please keep playing Diablo 2 and Half-Life.

This game is worth $.50 a day, it is by far my favorite MMORPG. Real easy to get into, massive battles, and it has some great powers.

Nothing like running into a room full of 20 guys with Repel on and watching them all fly.

Munku 05-20-2004 05:17 PM

It should have been done like DAoC. Sign up, get a month free. No credit card needed.

Shokan 05-22-2004 05:23 AM

I installed it just fine, you don''t need a credit card. When you make your game account online, there is an option for billing info. Either credit card, or 60 day time card. I now have 90 days free for this game (first month is free).

Woo!

edit - I guess 60 days of that isn't free, seeing how I PAID FOR THE TIME. WITH A TIMECARD.

Locobot 05-22-2004 06:03 AM

Jeez it's $50 just to buy the right to pay $15 a month? Sounds like they don't have much confidence in keeping people subscribed.

BigGov 05-22-2004 07:22 AM

Shokan, what's your name and what server are you on?

Shokan 05-22-2004 07:34 AM

Jimmy4 - I'm currently trying to find my "right" character. I play on Victory. I'll let you know when I get someone good. I'm experitmentting with Tankers right now.

BigGov 05-22-2004 07:52 AM

I'm kind of between 3 characters right now, a controller, a defender, and a blaster. Trying to find which one I like best. Names: Penn Jillette, Penn, Teller. Give me a tell sometime :)

raist 05-24-2004 10:25 AM

On Victory server as well.. still cant decide what character I like the best. My Kinetic/Energy Defender, Illusion/Kinetic Controller, or Energy/Energy Blaster. They are all so much fun hehe.

BigGov 05-24-2004 04:29 PM

How is the Illusion skill set? I kind of wanted to play that, but I wasn't quite sure what the hell the skills actually were.

Shokan 05-25-2004 06:24 PM

I think I'm going with this guy for now.

Name - Weapon 2735B
email - energydrain@yahoo.com
Server - Victory.
Area - Kings Row, mainly. Soon to be Perez Park, I think.

BigGov 05-25-2004 10:10 PM

Cool, I just made a scrapper tonight and he's gonna be hangin in Kings Row pretty soon.

Scrapper - Penn
Blaster - Penn Jillette

Give Seretogis a tell so he can give ya a guild invite :)

Esen 05-29-2004 02:00 PM

Cool,
I just bought the game today,
I was planning on going n hte champion server due to I have friend there, but now you guys are on Victory , what to do lol?

Only thing that scked for me is that I had to y a new graphics card $100.00

Im gonna install it in a little bit.

Even though they say it is difficult Im gonna start with a controller.

By the way I was able to score a pre order disk. SO Ill have the prestige power pool to se as well. Is it any good?

Maveric 05-29-2004 05:36 PM

I play Maveric on the Virtue Server, look me up sometime. don't forget to mention tfp. I also post at paragoncity.com .

CanadianCommie 05-30-2004 01:18 PM

THis game is absolutely spamtastic. It is completely worth the 15 dollar fee, and it is stupidly easy to pick up for people that have never played massive multiplayer games before

my main character is lvl 13, blaster, and I have so much fun with him I find it almost impossible to have a social life because of this game

considering the amount of work (i.e. multiple servers, almost monthly updates, among other things) that these dev's do, I am more than willing to pay 15 bucks a month

cockmonger 05-30-2004 08:04 PM

i know we're talking about payment options but i just wanted to comment on the game, i've never played an MMORPG because i thought they were...well..gay, i mean who the hell wants to run around in medievil times and hit other people with no purpose (i know i'll get flamed for this, but it looked and sounded annoying (from listening to my roommate play Dark Ages of Cum-a-lot. anyway my point is, that i am seriously interested in CoH, only it's too expensive of a game for me Just try 30 days free or not. however, City of Heroes still intruiges me and i can't wait to try it on a friends computer, i may even buy it if i really like it.
