I got to touch it today. Yes, it's a portable ps2. Although talking to one of the Sony people he said it's a notch below a PS2.

That thing was amazing. They had it playing movie trailers for Spiderman 2. The game demos were very impressive. They ony had 3 playable demos which I didn't get to see first hand but some ran previews of some upcomming titles.

When it comes out it's gonna be just like when the PS2 first came out. Hard to find. I can see the demand for this becomming very extreme.

I didn't get to see the DS yet so I don't have an opinion on it yet.

I'd post pictures but I don't have hosting atm.

It may be a portable PS2 (or a level below it...I've read that it's not quite up to PS2 standards), but it's also rumored to launch at $250. The Nintendo DS is rumored to launch for $150.

After seeing the new Metroid Prime game run on the DS, I can say that it's definitely above N64 standards. Not Gamecube-quality, but pretty damned close.

Of course, I want both of them.

For me, the real questions are "how long can it last on battery power?" and "how well can it fit in my pocket?" If it doesn't measure up well to these two criteria then I object to the use of the adjective "portable" to describe them.

Really, if either system ends up being a laptop, I'll keep my GameBoy Advance SP, thank you very much...

Having had extensive hands on time with both, I can say you're partially right. The PSP will indeed rock, but don't underestimate the DS. It's a kick-ass device and offers more innovation than any game machine I've seen in 9 years of covering this industry professionally. I had 45 minutes of hands on time with it today behind closed doors and it was incredible. I can't wait to get my hands on one with no restrictions.

The only concern I have is the demos I got all took place where the DS was bolted down. I'm afraid the experience will change when it's in the palm of your hand.

Sure the PSP is a superior machine in terms of graphics an aestetics but the DS seems to offering a whole lot more in terms of diverse gameplay, I for one cannot wait to use the touch screen.

On the PSP I seriously want METAL GEAR ACID.

On the DS I seriously want METROID HUNTERS.

i wouldn't assume that the psp will win the portable battles from just the superior hardware alone.

don't forget about the gamegear. it was color, better graphics engine and had a tv tuner for the system... yet it made limited inroads against the gameboy. there is a limited market for a $250 dollar portable device... and a large portion of the portable market is skewed towards the younger crowd where 250 is out of price range.

i'm not against sony... but i really would like to see the psp fail, it goes against a lot of what i hope for the game industry. i'm wary of all these convergence devices sony is trying to push. on top of that, it is basically an extention of the regular console platforms... the DS is an attempt at something new and fresh.

Hulk makes an excellent point. Also we've had Nintendo for portables for a while, thus we know their games, and getting venders for them isn't too hard. You say PSP has better hardware, but the DS goes beyond just simple hardware. Its potential beats just a simple handheld...

Its more than that....

As a FanBoy response...

Fuck the PSP up its ass... The DS shall own you!...

Yeah both sounds good to me, but I'm getting the DS first.

Glad ya asked!

PSP:

DS:

As mentioned above, PSP is literally a notch below PS2. The DS screenshots and movies I've seen so far have been UGLY and outdated when compared to the PSP.

However, the DS will have built in wireless, so that's a plus.

[edit]

Also remember, Sony is still #1 in terms of home consoles, so they have more game developers ready to roll on the PSP. Until now, the only handheld console you had was Gameboy. Developers will LOVE the things they can do w/ the PSP vs. the DS.

RE: Dreamcast being better... Sega was doomed from Saturn days. Yes, the DC was a good system, but what good is it if you're the poorest performing home console (in terms of companies developing games for you)?

Why's it always gotta be "PSP pwns and DS sux!!" Why not just accept that both companies kick ass, and both companies are sure to deliver great handhelds? Both systems look excellent. Each has advantages and disadvantages over each other, but remember the companies behind both of them: Nintendo and Sony. The only thing that can result from two handhelds is better games for the players.

I have been a Nintendo fan all my life, but I'm excited about both systems. They will each fill my gaming needs. As I've stated before though, your system is only as good as the games you put out for it. We all know Nintendos track record of late.

The PSP has the advantage in that it will do more than play games. I guess we'll find out in a few months!

Well, the GBA has a battery life of 18 hours, but if you use the backlit screen (which is basically required) then the life goes down to 10 hours. I'm betting that Sony's 10 hour lifespan is with no backlighting or something like that. If it really is 10 hours, then I applaud them!

the gamegear was sidelit.

i think that for the portable market... hardware supremacy isn't as important as it is for the home consoles.

the gameboy has smashed all competing handhelds... all of which have superior hardware (neo-geo pocket, ngage, gamegear, wonderswan, lynx etc.). still, i think the psp is the stiffest competition since the gamegear.

i'm just not interested in watching movies on a psp... it's a neat feature, but i know that if i had a psp i wouldn't use that very often. i've got a portable dvd player that doesn't get much use. also (i'm probably in the minority on this), but insanely detailed 3-D graphics aren't a big selling point either. other than the "gee-whiz" appeal... i just don't see myself trying to play halo or mgs on such a little screen for extended periods.

maybe all that'll change... but when i think of how i use portable systems and how i want videogames to progress, the DS seems like the more enjoyable system.

irateplatypus makes an excellent point. Fancy high-detailed 3D graphics are absolutely NOT suited for small, portable screens. If I want to play a game like MGS, I want to sit down and enjoy it on a decent sized television for a few hours at a time. Just thinking about staring at a small screen with 3D graphics on it for an hour or so makes my eyes hurt.

huh, that's weird. everywhere else i've read says sony hasn't announced a price point but speculates it won't be any cheaper than 250.

IGN reported on the 11th...

http://psp.ign.com/articles/513/513479p1.html

(last paragraph)

JUST MY OPINION: 10 hours of battery life coming from a company that is a year away from releasing this hardware sounds a lot like 4-5 hours when i'm actually using the unit. it's just the way it works... nearly all companies wildly inflate battery life estimates. they use theoretical figures under the most ideal conditions.

damn you guys are just as bad as the kids and teens in forums dedicated to gaming.

"the PSP will rock just because"
"the DS will suck because it will"

and i love it when people post the BEST screens of their favorite and then the WORST screens of the one that they think will be crap.

i personally think that the DS has the possibilities to entertain gamers much more than the PSP. having two screens will give developers so many more ways to change gameplay around. and a touchpad might not be as gimmicky as people think. add in the fact that you get built in wireless for wireless lan and internet gaming, and you've got something special.

for me, the PSP is just what it says PORTABLE PLAYSTATION. sure it has great graphics, but i can get great graphics on my console. and i really dont have much use for a portable DVD player. and i really think that console gaming and portable gaming are completely different in terms of the types of games.

but what i dont want to see happen is people turn the DS into the kiddy portable, while the PSP is for mature gamers. but i think it'll happen. people always have shit to fight about, they need it. we will never see the day when people actually enjoy gaming....

I think the DS will be great in its own respects. I like Nintendo and I will own both. But the DS so far does not have near the power the PSP has. Not to mention Playstation has lots more third party developers than Nintendo. Hell I still say the Neo Geo Pocket Color rules.

Sony is notorious about fudging statistics on hardware yet to be released. I was talking about the real "everything on playing a game taking the psp to its limit battery life" battery life, not the best possible situation. I'm thing about six to eight hours is what it will actually get.

More DS pics then to be fair!

It's not that it's the best of/worst of... it's that the DS is an N64 vs. a PS2. Naturally, everything is more polygonal and jaggedy.

For those who want to see for themselves, check out the video demos for the DS and PSP at ign.com:

DS - http://gameboy.ign.com/articles/515/515497p1.html

PSP - http://media.psp.ign.com/articles/51...32/vids_1.html

Not to say N64 was a bad system for it's time... but c'mon, that was 8 years ago. Sony has made the leap into the handheld market by pretty much introducing a portable PS2. You're tellin me Nintendo couldn't crank out anything beyond an N64? Big mistake there. It doesn't make sense to me that if you're gonna compete with the top dog that you'd release something sub-par (graphics wise) to their product.

Remember, this is the video game industry. Graphics are not icing on the cake... it's pretty much the WHOLE cake.

While it's true that the games themselves will make or break the system in the long run in terms of how fun they are, graphics DO play an integral part. Ask someone to pick the original Gameboy's graphics vs. GBA. GameCube vs. N64? PS1 vs. PS2? Ever play THPS for GBA? Horrid. Remember Mortal Kombat for the original Gameboy? *shudders* It might be a fun way to waste 20 minutes, but given the choice over that or a portable version of the REAL thing, I'd take the latter.

Yeah, you could get the same graphics on your console, but remember, that the latest console technology is already 4 years old (if not older, counting the development time). The fact that it's now portable makes it that much better, IMO.

I'm not a Sony zealot that wants the demise of Nintendo, but man, Nintendo is sure making some silly mistakes. Not to say the DS won't be any fun, but graphics WILL make a huge factor in how well a system (portable or not) sells.
