More DS pics then to be fair!
It's not that it's the best of/worst of... it's that the DS is an N64 vs. a PS2. Naturally, everything is more polygonal and jaggedy.
For those who want to see for themselves, check out the video demos for the DS and PSP at ign.com:

Not to say N64 was a bad system for it's time... but c'mon, that was 8 years ago. Sony has made the leap into the handheld market by pretty much introducing a portable PS2. You're tellin me Nintendo couldn't crank out anything beyond an N64? Big mistake there. It doesn't make sense to me that if you're gonna compete with the top dog that you'd release something sub-par (graphics wise) to their product.
Remember, this is the video game industry. Graphics are not icing on the cake... it's pretty much the WHOLE cake.
While it's true that the games themselves will make or break the system in the long run in terms of how fun they are, graphics DO play an integral part. Ask someone to pick the original Gameboy's graphics vs. GBA. GameCube vs. N64? PS1 vs. PS2? Ever play THPS for GBA? Horrid. Remember Mortal Kombat for the original Gameboy? *shudders* It might be a fun way to waste 20 minutes, but given the choice over that or a portable version of the REAL thing, I'd take the latter.
Yeah, you could get the same graphics on your console, but remember, that the latest console technology is already 4 years old (if not older, counting the development time). The fact that it's now portable makes it that much better, IMO.
I'm not a Sony zealot that wants the demise of Nintendo, but man, Nintendo is sure making some silly mistakes. Not to say the DS won't be any fun, but graphics WILL make a huge factor in how well a system (portable or not) sells.
