Nethack, contrary to the name is single player.

Just get Baldur's Gate 1 or 2, it's $10 at Gamestop, networked, really good, and really fun.

Balders Gate 1 and 2 are some of the greatest RPGS ever made period. If only Fallout were multiplayer, then the grandoise would truely be accomplished. As for multiplayer Balders Gate over a network, we tried it with 2 and though it was fun, it seemed a bit lacking. I do recommend Neverwinter Nights if you're playing Multiplayer..shits good.

Neverwinter Nights gets my votes...

The price is down to just over $15 and there are TONS of player mad mods out there for it.... One of the funnest RPG's I have ever bought.

It's an online rpg, but it's free, there's an option to become a member (pay) to get more stuff, but there's a hell of alot that you can do in the free version. Very cool. But you may have meant something that you can just play networked, in that case I can't help you. But RuneScape is worth looking at, regardless.

Runescape is a halfway decent free RPG. the graphics are pretty amazing for what they offer.

but the game itself as a whole is not all that fun. it starts out pretty great, but after a while it becomes amazingly TEDIOUS. if you want to advance and be able to create your own weapons and other items, you have to spend literally HOURS leveling up your particular skills.

you may spend 10 hours mining and turning your ore into iron bars in order to upgrade your mining and weapons forging skills high enough where you can mine coal and turn your ore and coal into steel. factor in the fact that you have limited places to do these things where a limited amount of mining can be done, with dozens of other people doing the same thing, and you can see how things get old fast.

Ah, but I used to play it a year or two ago when it first came out. Back then everything was very manual. You think it gets old now? Imagine in order to mine you had to go into your inventory (1 click) select your pick ax (1 click) and the select the rock you wanted to mine (1 click). That's three clicks, and depending on your skill level you may have to do that four or five times to get one piece of ore. That's 15 clicks for one ore. Now it's all automatic and it mines until you get something. Damn whippersnappers.

It's still a pretty cool game for being free. Although I think it's getting too big and complicated for it's britches.
