online gamers

I have a question that I hope some of you knowledgable TFP gamers can help me out with. Why, when you simply mention that a multiplayer game could play better with a patch or two, is there always some gamers who take it personally and start cussing you out and saying that the game is fine, and your comp is crap?

I had that very same thing happen to me on several occasions now, especially with BF: Vietnam. Its a documented fact that many players are having some issues with this game, and that a patch will probably be along soon to clear it up, just like in BF:1942. So a few times, after being frustrated by major lag issues and clipping, I have mentioned that I can't wait for them to release the patch. And in every case, immediately after my statement, someone verbally attacks me, like I just called there mom something unspeakable. Do some gamers get that attached to a game, or are they just jackasses in general, and this is the venue they have chosen to express their jackassedness?

Me and my friends always think of these jackasses online and how they are in real life (if we could meet them). I was playing Vietnam the other day with Lasereth and Blitzkrieg on the Hue level. I was at a flag (waiting to conquer it and make it change back to my team's colors) and so I was in a room mowing down people as they came by (the other team trying to get the flag). Most people were like "owned" or "nice shot." Then the Bitch came in. "OMG YOU FUCKING CAMPER!!!!!!!!!!"

How are we supposed to take a control point without camping in one area? You can't. You have to "camp" at the flag to get it! There's no other option!

So then the guy goes off. "I BET YOUR PARENTS BEAT YOU WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD!!!!!!!!!! I'M A PSYCH MAJOR AT A UNIVERSITY I KNOW MY STUFF YOU FUCKING CAMPER!!!!!!!!!"

I was like "ok, if I'm a camper, please explain how I'm supposed to get the flag WITHOUT staying in one spot and killing people as they come."

That pissed him off even more. "YOU FUCKING FAGGOT YOU FUCK DONKEYS DONT YOU OMG YOU NEWB I OWN YOU YOU FUCKING NEWB COCKSUCKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

It was truly amazing.

Just ignore those idiots.
They're not worth the fuss.

If their responses bother you too much, try not making the remark, but posting about it in a forum where reasonable discussion can take place. That way you'll probably have better responses.

As for those idiots: the above cartoon is completely true! (both in respones to chat and actual gameplay btw)

Side note: BF:V has some issues, but the game is awsome! Gotta love the music, the jungle and the attack choppers!

I'm no psych major, but these responses interest me. When my game is "slow" (i.e. I'm not a very active player) I try to see what more responses I can get out of such a person. Be irritating all you want, but I'll be prying you for more!
Plus, that helps them get banned sooner so everybody is happy.

Maybe I am sick, but I love these people and find they make my game more enjoyable. I usually don't get the time I would like to put into these games to be really good, but i have had years of experience of being a smartass. I just love to get these idiots going. That way at the end of the match when people are like gg I had 20 frags etc. I can be like well I got 2 dickheads to leave the server!

Well, I could undertand if I was a fucktard too, and was making comments to everyone all game long, but I don't usually say boo to anyone. I don't see it as a chatroom, its a damn frag fest. So when I do make one neutral comment about an inanimate object, I really don't feel like taking shit for it.

And I agree, Vietnam is a sweet game, but like the early stages of 1942, it could use a patch or 2.

And to make smartass comments back to these idiots is pointless, because I end up having to explain half the jokes anyway. Its just a pain in the ass all the way around.

Understand that warcraft places you on teams with players of roughly the same "skill ranking". So basicaly i've reached a point where it's impossible to run into a person who is actually 'bad' at the game. as long as you build units and dont do anything really stupid, you have just as much chance to win as the other team. The outcome of warcraft games are so often based on random occurances that it's really difficult play the game poorly...

end rant

I too agree, that Vietnam could do with a good deal of patching.

Whenever I say ANYTHING in regards to a patch, or balance I am flamed.

So.

I run my own server, people bitch = ban. With thousands of gamers online at one time, it's not hard to fill a server with at least tolerable players, the day of the smacktard is numbered.

Actually, I think the noob comments are hilarious. I love being called a noob, then coming away with the gold star because I pounded them and their whole team.

I wish more server admins were like you Mephex, the online game community would be a better place. I have noticed that alot of servers don't condone any racial remarks, which is deffinately a step in the right direction.

I love hunting down the "internet jackasses" especially in games like Unreal 2004, I take special pleasure in killing them as many times as possible without saying a single word to them the entire match. Then at the end screen when it says I've killed the most people I will go "oh hey the noob won!"

Yep. The best thing to do with online gaming assholes is to majorly pwn them and not say anything until the match is over with, then you can rub their faces in the dogshit of their own creation.

Welcome to why I won't play online anymore. I completely refuse to. Once upon a time, online play was fun and challenging, and most of the participants were good sports about everything.

Then came Counter-Strike. I completely blame it for the destruction of online play. The idiots got ahold of it, and they were bad enough, but then everyone else picked up the game and with it, the idiots fucktardery.

Now you have cheaters, racists, homophobes, and generally poor sports everywhere. This is why I do LAN parties. Much easier to prevent stuff like that.

cradog, camping isn't always legal, and if it is its certainly not honorful. When I play online I like to bring a certain sense of class to the game. I don't shoot unmoving targers (AKA people who just spawned in mechwarrior and such) and I try not to do things that make people total pricks. Nothing pisses me off more than taking out an entire team, with help or trouble, having only like 5 health left then walking to the enemies spawn to find out they have an objective and they haven't even left it. Therefore getting popped in the head from a camper, then having him rant about owning. Thats not owning..thats hiding..

Devs put sniper weapons in their games for a reason, you know. And that reason is far more often than not for camping.

It angers me when people complain about "camping" in an FPS game, or "rushing" in an RTS game... as if I'm cheating.

It's like.. look, if I'm hiding and you can't find me and I'm racking up frags, then come find me and kill me. Don't sit there and complain because my style of play is advantageous to my victory. If the game was meant to have a non-written rule about "no camping", then the level designers wouldn't allow you to hide in such spots.

A good example of this is in Unreal Tournament on the Morpheous map... you can use your teleporter and hide up on top of the lightposts. Get the sniper rifle and you pretty much have a birdseye view of the whole level and can pick people off like rats. That style of play is in no way, shape, or form cheating.

The "rushing" thing pisses me off, too. In StarCraft, some races (Zerg) could build units loads faster than other races... so as soon as I got 6 zerglings, I'd send 'em over to their base to scout things out and to whack a few of their harvest units. I'd get all kinds of insults like, "You fucking cheater/rusher" or "WTF you do that for?" Look, I'm playing how the designers wanted me to play. If I have 6 units to attack you and I send them over.. and you have NOTHING to defend with, then oh well. Live and learn.

...but no, they see it as cheating/hacking. Ah well. In FPS games, I generally tend to aim specifically for the complainers, which makes 'em even more angry

Follow him up and smack him one with the impact hammer, then steal his rifle and shoot him back! Hell, if he can see you, you can see him, rocket him from the ground. It's hard as buggery to snipe a moving target, unless they run predictably.

y'know if the chat spammers really bother you that much you can always turn chat messages off (at least in some games).

As for the campers and the snipers, like a couple others have already said: that's part of the game. If you don't like getting killed, then get better.

uhm... you dont consider yourself a good and seasoned warcraft player i presume? Basicly anyone playing an RTS seriously knows that its hardly any random occurances in it, you dont just randomly build units and attack... you scout and go for the weaknesses. Look at some online korean gaming TV when they play broodwar, all the players scout out the opponent fast and frequently.

I also have to say, if youre gonna play online, get into a gaming community, and start doing PCW's and ladder games... its alot more fun, and you more often than not get passwords to privat servers and get to play serious games without all the newbish public shit. In my opinion playing public makes you wourse, only times i play public is with friends at night. And when it comes to camping, i dont like it, i dont respect it, but i wont compain about it, cause i have been known to do it myself when it is a favourable strategy (lets face it, anyone good at rushing and flanking is good at camping and knows what to expect). But if camping bothers you, stop playing public, and start playing pcw's, its alot easier to keep track of who is camping and where, and its alot harder to camp and "rack up scores" when an entire team is on ventrilo and knows where you are.

im very pro patching games, i allways find balance problems with games. And when we are talking about BF:V, what a bunch of biased developers. The vietnamese weapons are so nerfed compared to the us weapons its not even fun playing. I want bigger speeds on the mi-8 and possibly more armour, depends on the speed though. Less speed and armour on the f-4 phantom, better weapons on the mig17, a serious nerfing of the m60, less splash damage with the xm14, and maybe making the m14 a little better... possibly giving it a little more power. And another clip to the simple car15 and ak would be nice

Patching is good, when it comes to balencing game play and bug fixing, ect. Only problem I have is games like PlanetSide where they seem to think that 2 hours of play testing is enough time to release any patch they do. I played that game for about a week. To damne buggy, and instead of fixing play balence, they throw it off even more with each damn patch they do. Could be a great game if the programers could get their heads out of there asses.
I need to get a real computer, just so I can I find a good game to camp on.......

Hokay, time for me to revive an old thread for a bit of a rant. I was playing my new favorite online FPS, Enemy Territory this afternoon on one of my favorite servers, which happens to be one of <COBRA>'s clan servers. I enjoy this particular server because the admins are usually trying to keep things fun and fair (warn/ban for spawn killing and even teams among other things). After a particular game where I racked up a fair amount of kills (on top of having more XP than most of their clan members), I complimented them on running a nice server. In the next game, one of the clan members hits me with a grenade posthumously, by my mistake. The first thing typed is "OMFG, n00b." I simply typed back, "I'm not a noob, don't be an ass." I was muted immediately, and he went on about how I was being rude for a noob, and what not. Geez, dude, I just gave your whole clan props after playing up to their skills, shut up. Thankfully, another admin was cool enough to realize he was being a douche, so he unmuted me. People just don't know how to act, but I just find it odd that I can be talked down to by a high school kid and have little control over it at the moment. Just my two cents.

One thing you need to realize is that being in a clan doesn't mean that that person is not an asshat.

Most of the time, they're an asshat who just happens to be half decent in the game.

However, I certainly hope (and assume) that at the highest level of any game, the clans are full of nice people.
