X-Box to drop in price

From BBC

Quote:
Xbox price drop to boost sales

At launch in 2001, the Xbox cost $299
Microsoft has reduced the price of its Xbox games console in North America by $30.

The cut, which had been widely expected by analysts, brings the cost of the machine down to $149.99.

The price drop is widely seen as a way of boosting sales of the Xbox in the coming months.

The software giant is locked in a battle with Sony's PlayStation 2 and Nintendo's GameCube for the hearts and wallets of gamers.

Games are big business. Some $10bn was spent on consoles and games in the US last year.

Going down

The Xbox has been slowly dropping in price since it was first released in November 2001.

It initially cost $299. But this fell to $199 in May 2002 and to $179 a year later.

A further cut had been expected this year, ahead of the annual video games trade show, E3 in Los Angeles in May.

It is not yet clear if and when the price drop in the US will be mirrored elsewhere in the world.

As well as trimming the cost of the Xbox, Microsoft also said it was reducing the prices on games such as Project Gotham Racing 2 and Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge.

Overall, sales of consoles have been slowing down, despite the falling cost of owning a games machine.

But analysts say the price cuts could help to persuade more people to buy a console.

They expect Sony to follow Microsoft and take a fistful of dollars off the price tag of its PlayStation 2 console.

The Xbox retails in the UK for around £129. By comparison the PS2 sells for £139, while the GameCube is only £79.

what's that supposed to mean? being ignorant towards a console is the same as being ignorant to other people's opinions

I'm sure a whole super-slew of members here will tell you an xbox is worth the money. including me.

Xbox is definitely worth the investment, and now that its falling again, it's an even worthier recipient of funds. I'm just not gonna get one because I know I can mooch off my friends.

I used to be all "I like PS2 better than Xbox" but after buying an Xbox I haven't looked back, the system is absolutely brilliant, I can't believe I took so long to buy one.

False, however the next X-Box may do this.

I was the same way up until about a year ago. Except I didn't buy one. Someone I knew owed me about $120 for some product of mine they lost. In lew of payment I took their XBox, which included every Monster Cable connection known to man and 25 or so games.

I had a 120gig HD I had recently acquired so I modded the box, backed up the games I wanted, then took the stash to EBgames for a nice $300 credit. A year later and I've not turned on my PS2 since. It's a great console.

well it ended up being a "take anything you want/ anything i want??/ yeah anything" type of situation. i grabbed a box, put the XBox in it, went for the games, he didn't seem opposed to i threw those in the box as well. when i asked him where the hookup cables were he went and got a bag of cables and handed them over to me.

a lil over the top for $120....maybe, but the kid's been a huge pain in my ass for awhile now, guess he figured it was about time he paid back...

I keep hearing a lot of unfounded rumors that neXt will use flash memory instead of an hdd. Would help cut down on piracy as well as save overall costs, as the space isn't really necessary, but definitely nice to have. Personally, although I respect the XBox and love some of the exclusives for it (especially Halo, which I think is much better on the Box as opposed to PC), I'm going to wait for the next price drop after this one coming up soon. Maybe the next drop will include a Halo bundle.

Personally, I love my X-Box and at a price like that you should get one to love too.

I sure hope they don't go to "memory cards." If they do, they could at least make it big enough so you don't have to buy 87 of them to swap out when you change games. The one thing that annoys the piss out of me is having to keep track of all the GC and PS2 memory cards lying around.

Every system needs integrated storage with the option of removable memory cards, not the other way round.

I heard from a reliable source that the next Xbox is going to do away with the internal HDD. In it's place will be a set amount of storage on a MS server. ie. You buy live and get 25 MB of storage online, accessable w/ your Gamertag and password. They hope this will get rid of of the "cheats" proliferated by Action Replay. However, I don't see how this will work as not everyone has Live, but they may want to take game saves to a buddy's house.
Oh yeah, a pending release that starts with H and ends with 2 is progressing nicely. Still early to mid fall if y'all aren't bored waiting.

the rumors I've heard are not that the neXt will have a memory card, but internal flash memory of several hundred MB.

but this is just random talk from other forums, so noone really knows for sure.

Now, before you pounce on me and beat me to death with your massive 50lb X-Boxes, hear me out.

Never been a fan myself, and never intend to buy one. Yes I've played on one several times (A friend has one) and hated every second of it. Controllers felt horribly akward and ungainly (They had several non-stock controllers that seemed nice, but I was wrong) and the games I played weren't very exceptional. Halo was boring as hell, Crimson skies was alright, but nothing special, Mech Warrior was boring and a few others who's names I cant remember weren't very inspiring either. Personally, I didn't see anything that it could do that my PC couldn't do better and I see no reason to buy one.

HOWEVER, I do think its good for the price war. Anything that drops price in gaming markets makes me happy. That and it might get me a cheap PS2 from someone who buys an X-box.

hey, I respect your opinion, even though I happen to think Halo is one of the best FPSs to date. Especially with a good sound system and a large screen.

Personally, the Box is my least favorite console (although I love Halo, KOTOR (even though I originally beat it on pc - looking forward to playing the sequel on the box), NG, and I'm looking forward to Halo 2), so it's the last one I'm going to buy. I already own a Cube, GBA, and Ps2. My PC is moderately capable but when I transfer to a real university (community college at the moment) I'm getting a new Alienware. Anyway, I just say get em all, and you can get the best of 4 worlds.

alot of pc gamers tend to feel that way, but if your a console man, like myself, then it is the best out there. smoother, faster and can hold music on the hard drive. I really that i can play MY music with my games, or just listen to it when i am going to bed .

Project Gotham Racing 2
James Bond: Everything or Nothing
Halo
Otogi
Other games I'd recommend:
Ninja Gaiden - MUST HAVE! Probably the best action game in a long, long time.
Top Spin - it's a tennis game, but it's oh-so-fun.
Need for Speed Underground - damn good racing game, I like it better than Project Gothem Racing 2.
DOA Beach Volleyball - bouncy bouncy bouncy

There's probably more that I can't think of at the moment.

Reading this thread has gotten me really really jonsed to play xbox right about now. I left mine at home when I moved here to go to school, and haven't played in 8 months.

From what I'm told by my brother though, he managed to "break" it while i was gone. I have no idea how he would do that, but I'll check out the situation when I go home next month.

I would love to be playing right now though.

I paid 300 CAD for mine, and I didn't mind spending it at all. The cheaper the better though (especially if i end up replacing it if it is in fact dead)

I'd like to buy one just to play the Buffy games & Baldur's Gate...but...$150? I can buy much cooler things for that. I'm sure it'll drop even more when the next console comes out...

I'm hopelessly old-fashioned when it comes to video games, though. I still get a kick out of playing Atari & Apple \\e games.
