Perfect Dark

Does anyone else out there think Perfect Dark was a great game that never got the credit it deserved? In my mind, Perfect Dark is a very close second to Halo for the best FPS ever. Granted, the single player mode wasn't great, and the co-operative mode was pretty much worthless, but the multiplayer was amazing. The ability to customize your games was like nothing I've ever seen anywhere else. From which weapons were available and where they were, to the basic gametype, to the intelligence of the bots, you could change everything. The biggest problem for this game was obviously the ridiculous slowdown when you had 2 or more players and many bots. It seems to me that Perfect Dark would be a great title for the X-box. I love palying Halo (I host Halo parties for as many as 12 people with 4 X-boxes and 4 TV's), but I just can't help thinking about the customization of Perfect Dark. Hopefully Halo 2 will address some of these ideas and make an end all, be all FPS. Plus, I would love to have a squad-based FPS which allowed you to play through a mission mode. Imagine the co-op mode of Halo with 4 or 6 people.
Let me know what you think.

PD was a poor FPS! It's definitely one of the lowest on my list! It's right next to Nightfire, stupid sentinels and tactical snipers) However, I love Time Splitters II, me and my buddies get together and play. They generally get owned by me

For me, Golden Eye is still the king of the N64 1st person shooters. Atleast when it comes to playing against other people. I did however love the bots in that game. It great for just playing by myself. Now, i'll tell u good game that came out for the x-box and ps2 that has good bots, and thats Time Splitters 2. The new Perfect Dark is going to have a hard time topping the single player of Halo and the mult of Halo and TimeSplitters 2.

I was very pumped when this game came out, but I never got really into it. I do like the bots and extra weapons, but I still fall back on the original goldeneye when friends want to play.

i liked perfect dark as well, although most of my friends wanted to play goldeneye whenever we had multiplayer battles because they knew james bond and the characters.

Halo 2

I just read an article in the new Xbox magazine about Halo 2. It said that you will be able to use two weapons at once, even if they are different weapons. You would use the left trigger for the other gun instead of grenades. I guess you have to choose between 2 guns or 1 gun and grenades. Also, it said you can use the Shades(turrets) Banshees in multiplayer. There is a new small vehicle kind of like a 4x4 that allows you to shoot straight ahead and is quicker than the warthog. That's all I really remember. I thought I would just pass it along.

I just saw the new Xbox magazine and the had a little blurb about a new Perfect Dark game coming out for Xbox. If it is 3/4 the game that the original was without the slowdown, then it will be great. I can't wait.

Perfect Dark was the last game I played before my hands went south on me and I had to stop playing.
I liked the game a lot and the arena fighting was well done.
There was some good imagination in the stories.

Goldeneye was the most fun FPS of its day, including the ones on PC. Everyone expected PD, Goldeneye's sequal, to surpass it and be incredible. It was a huge letdown.

There was no reason to play PD over Unreal Tournament or Half Life.

TimeSplitters 2 is my favorite console FPS at the moment, but I don't think it compares to UT or CS/NS.

Perfect Dark was superior to GoldenEye in every way possible but two things: The badass James Bond factor, and the bad framerate at times. Other than that, Perfect Dark was simply one of the best console FPS of all time. The weapon selection, damn good plot, and extremely good graphics with the N64's expansion pack made it a truly memorable game. Yes, the multiplayer was better than GoldenEye's simply because of the options. I have yet to see ANY game, PC or console that has rivaled Perfect Dark's multiplayer capabilties/options. If the framerate was better, Perfect Dark would probably still be played today like GoldenEye was played forever after its release.

I agree that Perfect Dark was superior to Goldeneye (which rocked in it's own respect), but the framerate problem was irritating. Great AI, weaponds, customizability, and gameplay. Loved the farsight gun (lets you shoot through walls), the dual-function weapons, and the matrix style vs. mode....

Are you kidding? A 4-player game with horrible bots can't even compare to a 20+ player game with good bots like UT, UT2003, CS, Tribes 1/2, or NS.

PD had lame weapons, a horrendously choppy framerate, and poor level design.
The ability to customize a lot of things was the only real plus.

No, I'm not kidding. I said that Perfect Dark has more multiplayer capabilities and options. I didn't say it was the best multiplayer game out there, because it's not. I think Perfect Dark does a good job with multiplayer simply because of the massive amount of options available to change in each round.

The bots are decent in Perfect Dark; I think they are actually better than most FPS bots. Those PC games you listed are better in certain aspects; mainly the fact that more than 4 human players can go against each other. Ya can't really judge a console FPS against a PC FPS; I'm just stating that Perfect Dark's multiplayer OPTIONS are amazing.

Yes, the framerate was horrible at times. The level design was fantastic to me; the multiplayer was a bit lacking in the level design, but had nearly every GoldenEye level secretly hidden to make up for it. Ha ha, I loved Perfect Dark's guns. Ya can't forget the Cyclone or Farsight. At least it's not standard guns (pistol, shotgun, rocket launcher, etc.) like in many FPS. You have to give them credit for changing the guns up a bit.

I agree that it's THE one major plus, but not the only one. I loved Perfect Dark. If you can get past the crappy framerates, then it turns out to be one of the funnest console FPS's I've played.

PD was better in multiplayer than any bond out there, the shooting gallery was unique and allowed you to open all of the old bond guns, and include them with all the other guns, including the laptop gun. Plus you could play in some of the old bond levels. I didn't like the single player, cause I hated those little aliens. But other than that an awesome multi player game.

I think the thing that goldeneye had over perfect dark was that it didn't have anything to do with space and aliens and all that other sci fi stuff. The vast majority of people who are into that play pc and would rather play something on there. It was the first fps that the little gamers could get into. Also, the simplicity of goldeneye is what made it spectacular. Sure, being able to pick every little detail of your multiplayer game is great, but when things get that complicated, people that would not normally play an fps look away. Goldeneye was just perfect and was the game that made platform fps big.

Personally, I loved PD, the story was awesome, and I came 1 level to beating the game. The multiplayer was awesome except for the 'fuzzy factor.' When you were punched or such, and you coudn't see beans. That bugged me. But as far as I'm concerned, TS2 co-op mode is wicked, and the hard mode, is super-Hard, or maybe I suck, either way, its pretty fun.

I really enjoyed the game. All the good points have been made, but my personal favorite was the fact that the game kept the stats for you mp character. I used the same one for three years, and it was fun the watch the kill count climb.

Timesplitters 2 is great, though I hate that stupid monkey. I recommend elimination, I know most people play assault or capture the bag or whatever but elimination is great, when theres 2 of you left and one bot. TRy it in the hospital its spooky.

I loved this game on the N64. I even liked the single-player game, especially since the difficulty would get harder and harder.

I'm interesting in the sequel (it will probably be great), but I know I won't get it. I can't afford it timewise. Unfortunately for me, there's not enough time for all the great games out there!!!

Jesus, Perfect Dark and Conker's Bad Fur Day are the only two reasons I've kept my Nintendo 64. There's no denying that PD was loaded in the options, and that's why I still love that game. I'm looking forward to the X-Box version of it, and I hope it's even better than the original (if the frame-rate was any better, I'd rate it over Halo). To this day I still have fun just screwing around in the levels and looking for the pieces of cheese that's hidden in every level.

If Perfect Dark and Halo 2 get released with-in a year of each other, I'm gonna end up fighting myself trying to decide which game I wanna play (assuming both games live up to their hype).

"very close second to Halo for the best FPS ever."

I still have never seen why people think Halo is the best FPS ever, I wouldn't even put it in the top 5. It didn't really have anything groundbreaking, it was just a good fun game.

And after seeing the cell-shaded giant boobed J.D. Rare has crafted for the Xbox I really don't even care about PD2 anymore.

I totally dig the new look of PD. I wish they had had some info at e3, or even just a screenshot or two. The only problem with the game for the N64 was that the graphics were too blury to be able to see anything, on the xbox, this thing is going to rock (halo2 and PD *drool*)

Perfect Dark was much better than Goldeneye. How can you beat the Laptop Gun, Slayer, and Farsight gun for originality? I agree with Grayman that the multiplayer options were excellent. Timesplitters 2 has a great multiplayer, and in a lot of ways surpasses PD. However, there's one thing that bugs the hell out of me...what the hell happened to all of the statistics at the end of a round? I'm sorry, but after seeing every possible statistic at the end of Perfect Dark matches, a list of "points" just doesn't cut it. Maybe they'll fix that if they make a Timesplitters 3.

Oh, and another nice thing about Perfect Dark were the multi-player challenges. Sure, co-op story mode in TS2 is fun, but co-op in Challenges would've been great.

It's no legend, t3m3st. I saw it myself and know some folks on the development team. The new Perfect Dark I haven't seen, but suspect they'll roll that one out for public viewing next May - and it'll be on shelves in a little more than a year. I'm curious to see what they do with it...

Sold my copy off a cople months back. As much as I tried to like it, I never could. It felt like it was trying to be too many things: Blade Runner, James Bond, Aliens, X-Files, just too many themes without a real focus.
