Help A Newbie Gamer Get Involved

OK. I just started playing games online. And I'll be the first to declare, I'm not very good at them, but I have fun and respect the rules and don't do really really stupid things that people always bitch about.

I've got one of those funky Gamespy memberships which makes it easy to find servers and patches and all that junk.

I don't have any sense of community within the games that I play. I don't have any buddies to play with or against, no group to call home, nothing but my rifle, my pony, and me.

I still have fun, but I'm wondering if Gamers on TFP get together at all. If there are any groups to join for the games I play. How I should go about getting online buddies to play with. Stupid mistakes I shouldn't make...etc.

Any pointers?

I play:
Battlefield 1942 (and some mods)
Half-Life (Mods, CS, TF, etc.)
Halo (PC Demo)
Unreal 2 XMP (Demo)
Neverwinter Nights
Enemy Territory

Thanks...

If you play the Battlefield 1942: Desert Combat mod, I suggest a server called netGamer DC. The IP can be found on www.netgamer.net.au

The website seems to be down right now, so I'll try to find the IP if you're interested. I play frequently, so I'd probably see ya on there a few times. I go by Lasereth (I'm not in a clan, I just like that server a lot).

When my DSL comes online (Jan 29th now, ugh!) I'll be playing Frozen Throne, the Warcraft III expansion. Then waiting patiently for Halo 2 and Half-Life 2. I was pretty good at Unreal Tournament 2003, even playing on a 56k.

BF1942: DC = best.mod.evar. I love that game. I also frequent the netgamer DC server. I find it to be the most smacktard-free of all the DC servers, as well as the most stable and quickest. And, commonly the fullest. If you can't get into netgamer dc at the time, just keep trying, or just look for the one with the lowest ping. You just gotta play at your own risk of being run over or being hit in heli by idiots who can't fly. Still an incredibly fun game, despite some of the flaws brought on by the populace that plays it.

That's two mentions of netgamer, are there a bunch of different netgamer servers for BF1942 or just one? BF1942 or just DC. Thanks for the input guys. How come TFP gamers never play together?

there's one of each, a regular BF netgamer server, then there's the ever popular DC server.

I played Q3 and CS a while back. I got invited into a clan this way: fired up gamespy (or any other server locator), looked for the server which gave me the best ping, bookmarked it, and just started playing there all the time. You usually see the same group of people each time you play, so play at just a few places and become familiar with the people there.

Ever play in the LostVilliage server? Hosted by clan =TAW=? That one is always full. I love the map because its so small it kinda has that old FPS feel to it. Houses to dodge, fences and low walls to duck behind, no vehicles except for what helicopters the team brings across the lake. Excellent level! Not sure If I've play on the one you speak of tho.. I'll look for it on ASE sometime.

Purge: Jihad was released too! You can play the demo before you buy, Demo people are able to play with people who bought it, like myself. www.purgejihad.com

I play Desert Combat a lot. I play netgamerDC every once in a while, but most of the time I just pick a server and play.

Lost Village is probably my favorite level in DC. I always have the top points on it. It's just me, a PK Machinegun, and UH-60's trying to own me.

hmm i would look up and try to find the main fan site or hub for a particular game, they usually can lead you to a board where the vast majority of the community reads and hangs out.

It sounds like you like FPS's (First Person Shooters)

I would suggest Planetside a very good game that will teach you a totally new way of playing, it has helped me play other FPS's a lot better.

nah, you can download dc easily enough

get thee to desertcombat.com and get started. all the patches should be there.

you'll have to start with the .5 patch i believe, that's a full install, but you gotta have BF 1.45 and 1.5. Then you can upgrade to the .6 beta.

Unreal 2 XMP just got a 75MB patch with a bunch of new stuff and will be getting a map pack soon, from what I've heard. However, the developer (Legend Ent.) was closed down by the publisher, so it might not have long-haul support. Either way, it's hot stuff, and Unreal Tournament 2004 is coming out soon, too. I've heard good things about that one as well.

I also recommend the Natural Selection Half-Life mod, if you haven't gotten it already.

Just hop on some clan servers and find out which one you really like playing with if you want to join the clan. Just don't ask right away, that usually results in a no unless you're kicking ass and taking names. If they have an IRC channel just grap mirc and start talking around and I'm sure you're bound to meet some gaming buddies that you can frag with.
