Nintendo Mystery Product: Nintendo DS
What do you all think about this new thingamajig? The 2 screens seems more like a gimmick than a true gameplay enhancement. I'm hoping this does something more than what it appears to do from the initial reports.
If you haven't the foggiest what I'm talking about: http://cube.ign.com/articles/473/473998p1.html I'm a die-hard Nintendo fan. Yes, before anyone asks... I did buy a Virtual-Boy (for 20 bucks, that is my only redemption). Lately it seems they've made some horrible business decisions. Perhaps we'll wonder how we did with only one screen a couple years from now. But, more likely, this will be a quack of an idea. |
Nooo!! Not a new portable! The Advance is doing great! Oh well, it is coming out in late 2004. I guess the Advance will be pretty old by then. The SP won't be, though! Damn. I wanted the SP to be the last portable system I bought for a long time. :(

don't put in the ol' sp in mothballs just yet. there is still plenty of life in it.
|
i love my sp .. i hope they will be innovative as always :)
|
it sounds interesting..
I dont think that many will be open to it's innovative design though. Seems like it's cool to bash Nintendo, so i hope they work on their U.S. image a bit before releasing anything like the DS Seems very interesting though.. |
Haha, click the link of the conceptual drawing. Teh win #1 and Teh win #2. I never find the time for portables. It's like maybe for a few hours on the road, if you're NOT driving. Or on a plane? Hardly seems worth the money paid for games/device.
Good Times~ |
I'll stick with one screen thanks.
|
SP is golden I don't see the need to fix it... I'll wait and see what they do with it.. but how exactly will two screens be good for Console RPG's? GBA has that going for it. but two screens that does nothing, same for a simple platformer... one screen is enough. The only thing I see two screens to be good for is a sports game.. racers fit that genre too, and one screen could be to look behind you... but i'm not willing to buy a new machine just so i don't have to tap a button to look behind me.
|
Never really thought about it but what does SP stand for? Small and Portable?
I'm reserving judgement on the DS until I actually see it and play it. |
It means "special."
I love my SP. I will wait to see what this thing looks like and what games it'll have.... |
I don't know guys. I smell another Virtual Boy failure
|
Two screens? LAN-play is the only reason to ever need two screens, in my book.
|
Ya, I really dont understand what's going on there. From what they've said its definitely not so two people can play at the same time. Its so you can have two screens of information... like if you were playing a football game, one side would have the overview of the whole field, while the other side would have the player that you're controlling.
Sort of weird. Well, not really weird, just pointless. Oh well. |
Maybe it allow you play 2 different porno's on 2 different screens. VisualBliss.
|
I gotta go with everyone else with the dual LCD thing. Honestly, the only damn reason two LCDs would come into play is with sports games.
Maybe we're all overlooking the fact that this is Nintendo, and maybe they'll introduce new features that use dual LCD screens. Nothing like this has been done before, so there's a lot of room for grand ideas. I still hate the fact that it's supposed to come out this year. Can anyone say "we had to have a system to go against the PSP?" -Lasereth |
The only way the this dual screen could be useful is if they can display one image. Sorta like the dual screens on computers.
|
Nintendo's. Worst. Idea. Ever. Well, not exactly, I'd have to say the Virtual Boy was. Or not focusing on online gaming. Or the N64DD. Or telling Sony to stop development of the PSX (PlayStation) add-on for the SNES. Or the Famicom Disk Drive. Or the Singer Izek (Sewing Machine controlled via Game Boy Color). Or the Satellaview (Add-on for the SNES that let you download games via Satellite). Or the Famicom Network Stock Trader (Add-on for the NES that let you buy, sell, trade stocks...). Or the Famicom 3D goggles. Or the Game Boy Printer.
|
Now you can view all your pokemon battles FROM TWO ANGLES!!!
Seriously, this is awful.. I've been a hardcore Nintendo fan forever, but this is a terrible idea, I can't even fathom using the two screens. Really. The only thing that can renew my faith anymore is a proper sequel to The Ocarina of Time.. |
err 2 screens on TOP OF EACH OTHER? i wanna see how ugly this portable is going to look like......... *grins*
|
Well..Imagine if it had a longer screen, it wouldn't really be a portable so they split it and using 2 screens so you can probably fold it up and put it in your pocket.
|
Are there any photos of it yet?
|
no, i hope we dont' have to wait till e3 to see them either.
|
i think it has potential and as stated in the article it says it will be TOTALLY marekted seperate from the GBA and the Cube so probably as stated above another virutal boy failure on the horizon.
|
Ha ha, check out a reader mock-up at IGN:

i dont think its all that bad of an idea.. actually yes.. yes i do :hmm: |
Genius..that pictures was pure genius
|
does anyone have an actual picture of this said project?
even though the above pic is pretty funny |
This is why I stopped buying portable handhelds after Game Boy Color... They get one great idea then they change it a week later.

Yeah, the Gameboy Advance SP is the best handheld ever released. I think it might be the best for years to come. There are so many damn games on it, and many of them get incredible reviews. I've never been into handheld gaming (I've owned many Gameboys), but the SP made me a believer. I put almost 60 hours on Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2 are incredible, and Metroid Fusion can't be missed. There are simply a huge amount of must-play games on it.
The SP is one of the best purchases I've made. I actually think I've played it more than my XBox now. :) -Lasereth |
I'll stick to my SP.
|
More information finally...
http://gameboy.ign.com/articles/476/476328p1.html I like the idea of having a card type media with comparable prices to optical media. LAN support also... seems like Nintendo is making all the right choices for a brand new system while their traditional ones are suffering from some of those same shortcomings. |

Seems to me like a lot of "It's different, we're afraid of it" is going on here. It seems like you haven't actually thought about it yet.
I'm not sure whether it will work, but I can see several valid uses for multiple screens. Example. Where the SP seems to be leaning towards tactics games, what if you have one screen with your active play and another with your party's stats? That way you can more effectively use them. Or in an adventure type game, a play screen and a map screen? Or in any sports game, a play screen and an overview screen? Or in any wireless LAN game a play screen and a chat screen? Or in an RTS game a separate screen to keep track of your individual units and their orders? I'm not saying it will be a success. There are a LOT of factors in this, and I think a big part will be how well the software is developed around the new format. All I'm saying is you should at least CONSIDER giving it a chance. It could be the best thing Nintendo ever did. It probably won't be the worst. At least they're brave enough to challenge the norms. |
i read an article not too long ago that nintendo was going to start making simpler games that anyone can pick up and play. I dont see 2 screens as being simpler. I wonder what old games they'll be porting to this one! Also, I dont see how this thing would be durable. It scares me. I'm gunna go huddle in the corner in the fetal position and shake now.

hahaha
this entire thred made me laugh and the winner though its close is that picture classic honestly this could go in tilted humor i think |
lol. what scares me the most is the picture hulk linked to a couple posts above this one. how about the uncanny resemblance of the eyepiece/cover between those and the virtual boy's? Good times...
Ok, MooseMan threw out some ideas for using the 2-screen approach... but i thought the ones he listed to be minor improvements in the game interface; just take a screen overlay (football play list, point total, health meter, magic list) and put it somewhere else. probably better, but not worth such a radical change or investment in a new system in my opinion. can anybody think of a brand new gaming idea, one that would only work on a DS type system? my suspicion is that Nintendo has such an idea that they consider groundbreaking and are building the system around this concept... hoping for others to jump on board. Alright, ideas? |
Hahahh that's friggin hilarious. I think Nintendo learned their mistakes with the Virtual Boy.. I'm sure the DS will catch on just fine.
|
couldnt agree more.
look at the concept behind FF: CC. 2 screens....except 1 is your tv, as mooseman out it, there are unlimited possibilities. watch in a few years multiple screens will be the standard, i can here the fanboys now.... "1 screen, thats so 2004" Quote:
