which is a good online (preferrably free or cheap) RPG

I really want to play Final Fantasy XI online... are there any other alternatives?

Ahem...Anarchy Online

It was released in 2000 and they just came out with a expansion Shadowlands, I have to say it's one of the best MMORPGs I have played ever, I've played FFXI and I personally didn't like it, one, all there is and sometleveling and it gets really tedious, two there are lots of japanese players out there, probably everyone level 50+ is jap and they usually don't speak any english at all and Squeenix's crappy translater only translate the simpliest words like hi and i don't understand english. Also there's not really a community, no offical forums or Dev teams to listen to the players. Anarchy Online on the other hand has offical forums that listens to the players and does correct things that are wack, AO has beautiful graphics, the best community, and good gameplay. BTW I have to warn you though, AO has a very steep learning curve, it took me 2 weeks to figure this game out since it was my first MMO.

It depends on what you're looking for. If you enjoy PvP, DAOC is pretty entertaining, and has easily the nicest people I have ever played a mmorpg with. Leveling is pretty easy and classes are loosely defined, so you can many people of one class can play very different roles.

Its better then AO in my opinion. It does have a serious problem of a very low fan base though, cuz no one knows about it. An average of 400 people on its largest server in peak times…

NC is PvP oriented. The clan you are in and the faction you belong to determine your enemies. Clans can fight for outposts in the wastelands or have skirmishes in the lawless parts of the city. It was allot of fun.

FFXI is lacking in fun. Lots to do in it, but it is just plain "not fun". They have a severe lack of monster skins, a horrid grouping system, the worst UI I have ever seen. insane death penalty, all the servers are in Japan, hmm I could go On and On about the negatives to this game. I tried it to hopefully fill the time until WoW, EQ2, or Lineage 2 comes out, but it just couldn't keep my interest past the first free month. Stick with non MMORPGs until the big ones come out. You are a little to late to begin on one of the old games that have been around , and with MMORPGs, it really sucks to be bottom of the totem pole.

yea, i have that too... i agree.. thats why i wanted to know some other stuff, cause runescape got really old, really fast

DAOC is relatively cheap to get into if you just want to play it for a few months. $16 for the Gold Edition from Amazon (Gold Edition = the classic game + the first expansion), and $11/mo in three month blocks.

Having played Neocron for over a year and a half I can agree to some extent. However, over the last few months Neocron , and its community has degenerated into a pile of filth. For an MMORPG it has more than its fair share of fools.Griefing is rampant, add to that the population is getting lower and lower.

My main gripes were... Static Storyline( NO matter how events went .. they always had to keep the story going in a certain way), GM involvement is sparce to say the least, Very little high level content and finally THE BUGS, it was THE most unstable game I have played.


At the moment Im playing FFXI, and enjoying it.

Personally I like the look of Face of Mankind, which is due to hit beta soon.

FFXI is absolutely terrible, play one of the good ones. AC1 is good, and EQ is apparently still top dog, it's not my cup of tea though.

Also, play with friends. That's very important.
