AvP 2
I missed out on this hit, although I love both series and the franchise. I'm really hoping that Anderson doesn't fuck this movie up.
Anyway, I was checking out the game yesterday, and on ebworld I can get the gold edition for 20 bucks. Is it worth it? I've heard lots of good stuff about the game (I love single player; for the most part I'm sick of online gaming & the immature pricks that come along with it) but I was wondering if I should maybe save my cash for a newer game, such as Call of Duty or Max Payne 2.

Yes yes and fucking yes, it's one of the best shit-your-pants type of games out there, you'll end up walking down corridors inch by inch as a marine. In the first level you see a Predator high in the mountains shoot a couple of trucks, my god that bit rocks, one of trucks gets blasted right over your head, that's scripting at one it's finest. The endings leave a little to be desired but the game itself is infinitely rewarding. Buy it now!
However I think that Max Payne 2 and Call of Duty are better games but they are also much shorter. MP2 is currently my game of the year. |

YES YES YES. One of the best single player (and multiplayer) games I've ever played. It makes you go and watch every single Alien and Predator movie over again (I did). I didn't find the game to be as scary as everyone says, probably because I'm a console gamer and I've played through the antics of Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and other ultra-scary games. But it will catch you off guard a couple of times, either way. Plus: You get to play as a Marine, an Alien, or a Predator. VERY cool. You basically have unlimited health with the Predator, it's badass.
For $20 I'd definitely buy it. Plus, the game engine is a VERY nice one, it will run EXCELLENT on a computer that isn't the best in the market. Marine is excellent as well; you get the STAR Rifle and the Pulse Assault Rifle and all the goodies that are in the Alien movies. You just feel like such a fucknig badass when you are blasting away at hordes of Aliens. Also, four words: Playable Power Loader Missions

God, I saved every 5 steps i took as a marine. I resolved to only play AvP2 at night, in the dark, and it worked. The atmosphere of the game is superb.
For some or other reason, I could never play with the alien though. Every time I switched vision, my PC hanged. I suspected it was the video card, but this strangely only happned twice when I switched vision with the Predator.

YES YES YES YES! This game rocks my freakin' socks off! Scary as shit. Stellar sounds, and getting to play as preditor is awesome. It's also fun playing multiplayer at LANs, (ALien's vs. Marienes.)

Every single goddamned time that stupid motion detector started beeping my heart would skip a beat. I remember a segment of the first mission where you hear it beep once or twice and it stops, and the motion is being caused by an environmental effect, but it was still enough to scare the shit out of you.
Best FPS I have ever played, hands down. |

I ve heard alot of good things about this game. But i hate the demo, you are basically running a bunch of rooms and corrorders just to search for a door that will lead you to the next area. I dont know if the level design of the real game is likethat, or does it have a more linear level design as we ve seen in COD and max payne series. Could some one tell me?

It was scary, but long as I had my trusty pulse rifle at my side, I was safe. [me makes pulse rifle sound].
I love the second or so level when you do something that alerts swarms (and I mean ulimited swarms) of aliens to come at you while you're running backwards through allyways firing the pulse rifle like mad and yelling "OH FUCK, OH FUCK, OH FUCK, OH FUCK!"

I found AvP1 more shit-yer-pants than AvP2, but maybe because I was a jaded Marine vet before I played it =D. It' s a nice game though, my first impressions wern't too good, but I enjoy it now.

I liked the Marine and Predator sections, but the Alien part bored me senseless. And I wish the multiplayer part of it had bots! It would have given the game a much higher repeat value.
All the same, tons of atmosphere and it looks good. Go for it. |

I can't believe I missed this thread!
I played through the game and loved every piece. I thought the writing was cool in that all the stories intersect. You see the labs and maps from different perspectives. Brilliant! But for me, online multiplayer was incredible. I still play online, in fact, and this game came out in, what? December 2001 or something? Unlike Easytiger, I really loved the Alien portion. There is a simplicity to the character that makes playing online a lot of fun. No weapon switching! I also think the characters are pretyt well balanced. Not perfect, but pretty good. The lack of weapon switching for an alien character is balanced with the lack of speed for health, and vice versa for a marine. Bots: Yeah, I can't believe that Monolith couldn't drop some in the multiplayer. They seem really effective in teh single player game, so it does seem odd. Maybe in the next version? All in all, this is a cool game. One of my favorites! |

avp2 is definatly worth 20 bux...
having hosted many a lan party i can say that it is usually most popular (try any evac mission) i would recommend staying away from the patches as they weaken the aliens and give the humans an ALICE suit. overall, its a solid game with a good engine, great MP and 3 SP mission types to play....i invite you to play the marine mission (just try the first 3) at night in a dark room..... |

I think there was a scary game thread somewhere here...but my high points winner for that was Clive Barker's Undying. Sonofabitch that was creepy. I literally got to certain parts of the game where I didn't want to load it up and play it...only I knew the story would have a wild turn some time soon. It really played with my psyche.

Still fighting it.

I have AvP2 sitting in my collection. I installed it once, and toyed with it, but I'm just too afraid it will make me pap my drawers.
I'm easily scared, and Alien is one of those things I grew up with... I remember seeing the chestburster scene for the first time when I was about 10 years old. Heh. Still creeps me out. |
