Gamecube II???
We have heard so much about the next Playstation and Xbox. Due out probably in 2005?. But I haven't heard anything about Nintendo's next console. Does anyone know when or if Nintendo is releasing their next console? I have an Xbox and I have decided that my next console will be a Gamecube but I don't want to buy one just a for a year's worth of gaming. I will most definintely buy the new Xbox when it comes out but I have gotten years of gaming out of the one I have now. Does anyone know about a new Gamecube? Thanks

Take a look look HERE for some information about the GameCube 2.
Not a whole lot of info but they do have links to other rumor sites. |
are they really planning on calling it the "Gamecube 2"? Not only is it unoriginal in and of itself, but it's a scheme that Sony is already in the midst of. Not that Sony is the only company allowed to do this or anything... I just think that Nintendo would want to stress what (if anything) makes their next console better than Sony's. Mimicking (or at least mirroring) Sony's naming scheme would do just the opposite....

Look at their track record so far. Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64 / GameBoy, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance...
|
Mahler, if the console has games you like for it, just buy it now..
It's not like those games on the market are going to dissapear or anything.. Plus the closer to launch of the new console, the cheaper the current software will get. Well.. in theory.. |
I know that the GC2 and the XBox2 are going to release before the PS3. This is the first time Sony hasn't had the initiative in the console launch, so things may be different this next generation of consoles. Apparently Sony's Cell Technology is harder to develop than they thought. I believe Sony has said that the PS3 is probably late 2005 or 2006 launch. I do know that there's a VERY big chance of it playing PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3 games (source: EGM).

I would think they would want to limit the next system's association with the gamecube to get away from that image. Don't get me wrong, I love my 'cube, but not everyone else does

I think they might be able to retain the name again, but a few things WILL have to change: DVD capabilities, and onling gaming are a must. Miyamoto, you have a good idea, and I give you credit for being a pure gaming enthusiast, but if the consumers want DVD and online gaming then it would be stupid to not give it to them. -Lasereth |
i think that its too soon to bring out new consoles. just strive on making new games for the ones already out.

I also think it's a bit soon to start bringing out new consoles. Does anyone feel like their current console is aging? I sure don't...
But if they do come out in the next year or so, one thing I would hope to see in the next generation consoles is backwards compatibility, like Sony did with the PS2. That would at least extend the lives of the current consoles a bit. |
Everyone, the next-gen consoles aren't coming out too soon. It's 2003 now. It will soon be 2004...then a solid year after that, 2005. Then almost a full year after that (end of 2005) is when the FIRST next-gen consoles are supposed to debut. The PS2, GC, and XBox still have almost two years ahead of them. They're following the typical console rule: 5 years. Most gaming consoles last 5 years before they are replaced, and this is going the same for the current systems.
2005 and 2006 is a great schedule for the next-gen consoles. PS2 is getting aged now. It came out in 2000! A 2006 release date for PS3 would make the PS2 SIX years old by then. That's longer than the PS1 lasted. GC2 and XBX2 are rumored to release in late 2005 which would put them at the 4-year mark which I agree is a little early. I honestly think GC2 and XBX 2 will be pushed into 2006 as well. -Lasereth |

i heard nintendo wasn't making a successor to the GC. They were going to release some new kind of product next year alongside a newly updated GBA to compete w/ Sony's PSP.

Nintendo are planning to release the GC2 before any Microsoft or Sony release their consoles. From what I know, they're still using modified PowerPC chips from IBM, and ATi graphics chips. Oh wait, so is the next X-Box. *cough* =D The new portable system was designed for China, and it's basically a system that plays N64-type games downloaded from stores.

I've heard the same, they definately don't want to alienate customers so shortly after the SP (which alienated standard GBA users).
BTW, anyone know what the N5 is? I heard this name a while back, could it be the name of the new Nintendo? 1NES 2SNES 3N64 4NGC 5??? makes sense... kinda. |
well they called the Cube ... "Dolphin" so N5 would just be the code name...
|
Yeah, so don't get too worked up about what they're gonna call the thing =D
IMO, I think that the Panasonic Q-style is the way to go. It has DVD playback, but keeps the smaller Cube discs for gaming, completely eradicating piracy. Pretty swank =D. Of course, they could always do with some larger discs.... |
The hardware out in China is to help combat priating.. It's a good idea in general, but im hesitant to see a system like this work well.
Anywho.. here is a link iQue info and pictures for the lazy ones: Box Art http://image.lik-sang.com/images/large/ique-web-box.jpg iQue to GCN controller size comparison http://image.lik-sang.com/images/lar...-console11.jpg iQue 64MB flash memory stick http://image.lik-sang.com/images/lar...e-console5.jpg the console itself in hand http://image.lik-sang.com/images/lar...-console16.jpg Game "Refill Kiosk" in a store http://image.lik-sang.com/content/ique/iQue_Depot03.jpg |
oye.. piracy isnt eradicated for the cube per se, it's just harder than hell to do. For instance.. i myself have been developing for the GCN for a few months now, If i wanted to i could very "easily" get into pirated games.. but i dont want to because that is illegal. Hell.. im not even sure if developing homebrew games is quite legal.. but since im not selling anything (or even remotely close toa finished product) im not to worried about it :) I t's mroe of a portfolio peice, and something im personally interested in. I figured instead of waiting for a game to be developed that has features i want, i'd just make it.

I just read some info on the PSX, and man that thing will be expensive, 700-900 bucks a shot
