Final Fantasy XI comes out in a week!

I've got it preordered from gamestop.com (free mouse pad and free overnight shipping, yay!), and I can't wait. At the same time, I have newegg.com shipping me all of the pieces I need for a new computer, so I'll have a comp capable of running the game a few days before the game comes out. This makes me incredibly happy.

IckUber 10-21-2003 11:55 PM

Glad to hear about that CyCo. I too am looking very forward to FFXI! Let the countdown begin!

Lasereth 10-22-2003 05:42 AM

I can't get excited until I see reviews. I still have a hard time getting past the fact that this game was HORRID in Japan, and there's no major differences between the US and Japanese version. Oh well, if it gets good reviews I'm all for it.

-Lasereth

IckUber 10-22-2003 07:13 AM

Why do you think it was HORRID in japan? It's widly played, if the game bombed, it wouldnt be coming over here.

It got very, very bad reviews over there. I've read from multiple reviewers that it never goes above 15 frames per second because of lag and technical issues, and that the same lag causes battles to be lost. I've never played the game; just going by what others have said. I honestly haven't heard ANY good things about this game. Trust me, that's hard to say considering I'm a BIG time Final Fantasy fan. I want this game to be good, and if it is, I'll play it, but I'm not going to get my hopes up after hearing nothing but bad things about it.

And about it not coming if it were bad...no, they would bring it over to the US just to make money. Square Enix knows that thousands of Final Fantasy fans would play the game despite it being bad. That's why they're bringing it over here. Let's just hope the problems have been fixed! Square Enix isn't a stupid company; hopefully the issues that plagued the Japanese version will be fixed with its launch.

Haha! Silly consol users...

IckUber 10-22-2003 10:27 AM

I've played it, a bunch, no such problems exist. Basicly the game was a smooth ride, any time I played, and I think any of the people that played would agree. Although this was the beta, im sure we can expect to have the same senerio reflect the release on Tuesday. Not only do us americans have the advantage of FFXI testing the waters in Japan first, but they already have the knowledge of every probelm they had 2 years ago at launch. This includes, server stuff, bugs, crashing problems, glitches, and cheats.

Rpgamer.com-

Also- "Japanese gamers have been playing FFXI since November of last year, when the game shipped for the PlayStation 2 in that territory. Currently, there is a subscriber base of over 280,000 users. "- rpgamer.

If it was such a failure, why would they already have 2 expantion packs out? I don't think failing software can support 2 expantion packs with out high sales figures, and subscribers.

Now, I belive that the failure your speaking of, is releated to the launch problems they did have. Although, after a few weeks of patches, and updates all was fixed. And the game took off. After they brought the game to PC in Japan, the sales increased even more.

I wouldnt call this game a failure at all.

I've actually played the game. It plays fine on a ~1.4ghz with a geforce4 ti, well over 15 frames per second. And that's about the standard for computers nowadays, if you comp isn't that good then you probably shouldn't be trying to play newer games in general. The lag isn't bad either, I got disconnected maybe twice in the whole time I played, which was probably a total of 15 hours... I had way more problems with games like Everquest and Anarchy Online when they first came out.

Whew! A few more weeks to finish up FFX and figure out the cabling situation for my network adapter then. :D

If what you say is right, then I can't wait to play it. I'm glad it's coming out on PC because our college network won't allow PS2 Online, XBox Live, or any other console Internet functions. :(

Phaenx 10-22-2003 05:32 PM

I've talked with a dozen or so people who beta tested it. They said it's kind of bland and gets very boring after a week, nothing to do, nothing innovative or interesting, just an average product.

IckUber 10-22-2003 06:49 PM

I thought there was plenty to do, i put at least 15 hours into that game, and i only did one side quest, none of the main quests, or any thing like that, i just ran around leveled, talked to people, tried to get better aromor, and learning how to play. No one even beat it on the beta and it was out for a good 5 months. This game seems to be full of things to do, i cant imagine it getting boring after a week.

I used to say the same thing .... till I tasted the waters of the almighty MMOs .... I used to sit around and make fun of my friends while they played their AC, DAoC, and Everquest. Tried a bit of AC2, PlanetSide, and Earth and Beyond - then I was hooked. If you don't want to get addicted, don't try it man. I'm warning you.

Renegade 10-23-2003 04:20 PM

Another MMORPG another pass for me. I echo the sentiments expressed above about paying for a game once. I can't justify paying monthly for something like that. I think I'll stick to single player or lan games thank you.

i also laughed at me geeky online orc slaying friends until i caught pneumonia and had nothing to do but sit on my ass and try out everquest. 2 weeks later my ranger was powerleveling to obtain the almighty SoW spell. i continued to play for 2 years off and on. not addicted, but a huge fan. only ever played the original FF on the nintendo or super nintendo (not sure) console some 13 or 14 years ago. not a big fan of anime graphics or the storylines so gave it up. nothing beats EQ anyway...except maybe EQ2. we shall see.

CyCo PL 10-23-2003 11:44 PM

I paid ten bucks a month for Asheron's Call, and that game kept me playing for about three and a half years... I figure, I usually buy console games for $40-$50, and they keep me entertained for a month or two, and I spent about a total of $450 on Asheron's Call and it kept me entertained for over 40 months. The money to time ratio isn't bad at all. :)

There's always online PC games, but all of the massively multiplayer games have monthly charges. Regular multiplayer games like Counter-Strike and BF1942 are cool, but it's pretty much the same thing over and over... There's no real feeling of progression through the game, just logging on, killing some people, logging off. The satisfaction involved with leveling up and earning new equipment and spells, etc. in a MMORPG is much greater than shooting guys with rifles over and over, in my opinion.

Then there's games like Neverwinter Nights, which has free online play but is far from massively multiplayer. I would highly recommend NWN if you don't want to pay monthly for an online rpg, but it seems as if Bioware is planning on releasing expansion packs for the game every other month now. :) Seriously though, I haven't even bought shadows of undrentide yet, and they're already talking about the next expansion pack. Most of the good servers require that you buy the expansion packs to play on their servers, so you're going to have to shell out extra money after purchasing the original game anyway.

If you don't want to pay a monthly fee after buying a game, that's fine. But the monthly fee is well justified. I could go into a rant about the fact that companies need to constantly maintain their servers and keep a staff working on the game 24/7, but pretty much everybody already knows that. When you're paying the monthly fee, you're paying for an extremely immersive online experience, much more than any of the games that offer free online play. You're paying for constant updates and bugfixes, new weapons and armor, new spells and skills, new areas and monsters. Unless you're playing everquest, most MMORPG's offer new content with their patches that most games would require an expansion pack for. Everquest is the exception, because they enjoy squeezing every last drop of money out of their subscribers by releasing an expansion pack for every single addition of new content, and actually getting away with it, but I won't get into that right now. :)

cant freakin WAIT

Konichiwaneko 10-27-2003 12:15 PM

as a former beta tester for the game I had an outstanding time with the game.

Pros -

Great class system
Feels like a japanese rpg.
Wonderful commerce systems.

Cons -

doesn't look different if running it at 1024x768 to 1600x1200...when you run a fixed resed lcd it's annoying.
Mouse feels like it was added after the fact.
Simple compared to other rpgs.

For those who don't believe me, here ya go.

http://www.fractalcanvas.net/trentchau/beta.jpg

I ran the game on a

3.2 p4
abit ic7
2 gig ddr 3200
radeon 9800.

Didn't have an problems with the game at all other then the fact that running it at high res doesn't make a difference.

Slacks_01 10-27-2003 12:57 PM

the way you pay for extra characters is kinda sucks

IckUber 10-27-2003 02:50 PM

Yeah, thats really stupid. I dont mind paying for matenince and server updates, things like that. But paying for extra characters is kinda milking people for what they got.

Xiangsu 10-28-2003 10:49 AM

It's out now, but I can't decide if I should get it or not.

Jervis 10-29-2003 12:33 PM

May I ask why is it that running at a higher resolution makes no difference? Does it only just support 800x600?

I'm looking foward to this game as well. I was very surprised when I ehard about it, their release is very hush hush. I'm probably going to order it on EBWorld tonight if there isn't a real big demand for it. Seems pretty underground to me.

Looften 10-29-2003 03:38 PM

I have the box, unfortuently I'm still waiting on the absolutely massive patch to download before I can play. I hear it takes 10 hours on a 56k.

FFXI synthesis combos?

Anyone have a good website or know any synthesis combinations? And anyone know which guild would be a good one to join? And one more... anyone have some good tips on anything?

Lasereth 11-03-2003 05:41 AM

Check out IGN's FFXI Vault. They have a ton of info on it there. I've never played it (waiting for IGN's review), but I will if it gets favorable scores.

I used to go to Allakhazam's for EQ info when I played over a year ago. Glad to hear he's still up-to-date. Easily the best MMORPG site I had ever been to.

I love how they actually have potions ethers and such oh and even limit breaks...(TP WEAPON SKILL) just wish my mage got to use them a little more. And just a tip to any of you if you haven't found out yet... USE THE AUCTION HOUSE you can make loads of cash there.

IckUber 11-05-2003 12:23 AM

They do have guilds, they are all over the place. Goldsmith, Fishing, carpentry, so on and so on.

The auction house is amazing. ive made lots of money there. I am on Leviathan, a lvl 10 Blk Taru, when you hit 10, you get a passive magic powert up skill. its very helpfull.

every time i go to play the game it closes itself and tells me i don't have the proper hardware to play the game..

i've checked and double checked the hardware specs.. and i'm completely sure i have the specs i need...

so what the hell is going on?

and also.. anyone else have any comments about the game? pros or cons?

Yeah fill us in on both the game specs and your system specs. It may be something as simple as drivers for your video card. See if there are some configuration test programs that came with the game when you installed it and check all the readme files.

(hopefully that'll help me save face when i ask this question ;))

ok, i just got FFXI. my character is all setup and i went through the opening scripted thing, got an "adventurer's coupon", and now i'm on my own. what do i do? i tried taking the coupon to the person marked on the map, but i can't seem to give it to her. and beyond that, what's a good way to start off? head off into the woods and hack away at weak enemies as in all other FFs? thanks for any help.

Miekle 11-09-2003 08:50 PM

mercury-hg....
Not if you know how to give the coupon or not. You don't really need to cause all you get is 50gill but you click on them once then right click and click trade then put it in there.

And ya basically just kill things and level up. There are also quests and missions you can do by talking to various people. The missions are more or less the story back bone of FFXI

That comes with the territory.

So like, what's the deal with PvP?

Personally I hate PvP,because I suck at it.PvP on all servers all the time or selected ones like Everquest?

Miekle 11-11-2003 08:52 AM

There isn't any pvp on it yet, not positive how they are going to work it but once land is all dominated by one territory i think you can start attacking or being attacked by others. Or something along the line of that anyways

Shauk 11-11-2003 12:20 PM

12$ i think it was?

IckUber 11-11-2003 01:06 PM

yeah 12. worth every cent.

glytch 11-11-2003 01:54 PM

12? On mine it says 10.44 for the first content ID and .80 for the rest. Wouldn't that mean it's 10.44 if you had one character and aren't playing Tetra Master?

mercury-hg 11-11-2003 09:55 PM

glytch - that's the pro-rated price for the first month after your initial free month. from then on, you'll be billed 12.95 at the start of every month

Tiser 11-12-2003 04:27 AM

The thing about MMORPGs is that you only have time for one.

Which do you think is better? FFXI or the upcoming Matrix Online? Doesn't look that bad. Monolith has a good resume.

Miekle 11-12-2003 10:22 AM

Figured I would ask everyones money making methods..

Heres mine...I hunt in saru so I kill crawlers (those yellow worms things). They drop silk which can be sold in auc for 700gill each or 10k for a stack of 12. They also drop culk or some sort of stone named that. You can gather three of these stones and give them to the cat lady at the farm and she gives you 600gill.

Thats my money making method.... any one have any others?

Phaenx 11-12-2003 01:16 PM

A nice combo would be Thief/Ninja.

Personally I want to go Dark Knight/Paladin (is that possible? ;p)
I still have to convince myself to buy the game though.

I believe that during your first free month you can create characters for free, up to the max of 16 characters.

IckUber 11-12-2003 05:23 PM

You can switch your job in the game, without loosing the job before. You can go back and forth as you wish. I know someone who is a lvl 13 monk, lvl 7 blk mage and lvl 7 warrior.

Also, when you hit lvl 18 you can have subjob's so, my freind for example could use his lvl 13 monk and lvl 7 blk mage, and have 2 of his favorite combos.

rainbowninja 11-12-2003 05:59 PM

HI EVERYBODY! So... my friend was tellin me how much he likes FFXI, but i have yet to see the game at all, let alone try it out. I played EQ for a long time, and shadowbane for a month or so. Liked em both, but nothing has been able to touch how bad EQ sucks you in. Wondering how you guys think it compares to the old school mmorpgs and if its worth a try! thanks studs and studdettes

There's already a huge FFXI thread on the main page. This'll probably be moved over there. I've heard so far that it takes just as long as in EQ to level up, so I imagine it's just as time consuming and addicting. I haven't played it yet, though.

I'm saving my pocket cash for Worlds of Warcraft, which is almost a guranteed god of a game. I believe that an online FF has the potential to suck seriously and has about a 60% chance it will...If it ever goes on a price drop perhaps ill give it a shot.

Gah online fees... gah.... Can you play this single player? :D I just cant justify paying monthly for a game that i will probably only play 2 or 3 times a week... i would really like to try it though :P

Also, when you hit lvl 18 you can have subjob's so, my freind for example could use his lvl 13 monk and lvl 7 blk mage, and have 2 of his favorite combos.

Your one toon could be several classes without a penalty?
What about every class in the game? And how would you deal with Several main jobs/subclasses? When you switch Main Jobs..would they have the subclass applied to the main job perma?

Or could I switch my sub dark kight for say a paladin?

Its better then eq by far, ive played eq for over 3 years and dropped it after playing this for 2 days on a friends account.

IckUber 11-13-2003 04:44 PM

ok, here is how it works, you can start off as one of 6 or so main jobs, the basics, Warrior, Monk, White Mage, Blk Mage, Red Mage, Theif. ( i think thats all) Then, at lvl 18, there will be a quest that will allow you to have a sub class. This sub class will be half the lvl that it is when its your main class.

In you Mog house, you can switch your jobs around, so, lets say im a lvl 10 warrior, but i wanted to switch to blk mage for a while. And that i got him up to lvl 10 also. then i switched to a monk, and got him to lvl 5. I choose that the warrior is my favorite, then i play him to lvl 20, i complete the sub job quest, and select blk mage at my sub class. So, i would be a lvl 20 warrior, and lvl 5 blk mage. Understand?

Then at lvl 30, new jobs open up, of course you would have to start over, at lvl 1 with a new job. *samurai, ninja, summoner, beastmaster, dark knight, palidain, dragoon* So, lets say i want to try out the beastmaster. I make the beastmaster my main job, and move my lvl 30 warrior to sub class. So now i am a lvl 1 beastmaster, and lvl 15 warrior.

Your stats and stuff are determined by your main job only. I think i got all that right.

too bad you have to pay monthly or else I would be playing it now.

Wow, I can't believe that IckUber, FFXI's official fanboy, hasn't popped up six or seven times yet to say "BUY BUY BUY IT ROX0RZ!"..

That being said, I've heard nothing but bad reviews from friends of mine who have tried it (who I also played EQ with, by the way).

Xiangsu 11-14-2003 12:56 AM

It's ok, my brother loves it. It has nice features, especially the class system. I dont think it can really compete with any of the upcoming mmorpg's though.

Darklight Adept 11-14-2003 08:40 AM

Actually, by switching to a new main class, your sub class is limited by that. It can only be at max 1/2 of your main job, so when you picked up lvl 1 beastmaster, your warrior would be capped at 1 until you started to level up your beastmaster

IckUber 11-14-2003 03:17 PM

ahh, my bad. See im still only lvl 12, so ive still got a ways to go....

Apokx 11-14-2003 07:30 PM

Well I bought the game, and Disc 1 wont run itself on my PC (I get random errors and it refuses to run the install)

I've done everything under the sun short of formatting (Wouldnt help anyways)

The playonline disc installed fine.
I'm seriously pissed and out of ideas atm.

Also,the expansion disc runs fine..

Disc 1 in the CD rom = absolutely nothing besides an error.
It has something to do with my PC not liking disc 1 for some reason, and disc one runs fine on a friends PC.

Tells me "Setup Launcher had encountered as problem and needs to close"

IckUber 11-14-2003 08:17 PM

call playonline support, or maybe take it back to your retailer...

Ooja Nikaboloko 11-15-2003 02:58 PM

update cd drivers/firmware and it should be ok.

OUCH, haha, sure call me a fan boy, but honestly look around, i dont know how anyone can say that it "60% chance of SUCK" read these threads, everyone is loving this game, because it is great. If im hurting anyone from looking at it, then ill shut up, but i would like to hear why you think its a bad game, "cause your freind says so" give some valid reasons, before you automaticly assume its a pile of shit. I dont need you harrasing me for games that I enjoy.

Vilkata 11-18-2003 02:02 AM

Being a vet of many MMORPGS(UO, AC, EQ, SWG) I must say that this game is absolute....

COOL! :p

I've been pretty hooked on it when I play. This last Saturday I spent 10 hours straight playing it. Then again, I loved SWG when I first got it. That only lasted for a month. So I'll let you know in 3 weeks if it is actually a good investment or not :p

Mr.Deflok 11-18-2003 02:12 AM

I'm not into MMPORPG's but it would've been neat if they included a single-player campaign to FFXI like they did for Uru: Ages Beyond Myst. Looks like a fantastic game, hope you guys are enjoying it!
