Final Fantasy XI comes out in a week!
I've got it preordered from gamestop.com (free mouse pad and free overnight shipping, yay!), and I can't wait. At the same time, I have newegg.com shipping me all of the pieces I need for a new computer, so I'll have a comp capable of running the game a few days before the game comes out. This makes me incredibly happy.

Glad to hear about that CyCo. I too am looking very forward to FFXI! Let the countdown begin!
|
I can't get excited until I see reviews. I still have a hard time getting past the fact that this game was HORRID in Japan, and there's no major differences between the US and Japanese version. Oh well, if it gets good reviews I'm all for it.

Why do you think it was HORRID in japan? It's widly played, if the game bombed, it wouldnt be coming over here.

And about it not coming if it were bad...no, they would bring it over to the US just to make money. Square Enix knows that thousands of Final Fantasy fans would play the game despite it being bad. That's why they're bringing it over here. Let's just hope the problems have been fixed! Square Enix isn't a stupid company; hopefully the issues that plagued the Japanese version will be fixed with its launch. -Lasereth |
Haha! Silly consol users...
|
I've played it, a bunch, no such problems exist. Basicly the game was a smooth ride, any time I played, and I think any of the people that played would agree. Although this was the beta, im sure we can expect to have the same senerio reflect the release on Tuesday. Not only do us americans have the advantage of FFXI testing the waters in Japan first, but they already have the knowledge of every probelm they had 2 years ago at launch. This includes, server stuff, bugs, crashing problems, glitches, and cheats.
Rpgamer.com- Also- "Japanese gamers have been playing FFXI since November of last year, when the game shipped for the PlayStation 2 in that territory. Currently, there is a subscriber base of over 280,000 users. "- rpgamer. If it was such a failure, why would they already have 2 expantion packs out? I don't think failing software can support 2 expantion packs with out high sales figures, and subscribers. Now, I belive that the failure your speaking of, is releated to the launch problems they did have. Although, after a few weeks of patches, and updates all was fixed. And the game took off. After they brought the game to PC in Japan, the sales increased even more. I wouldnt call this game a failure at all. |

I've actually played the game. It plays fine on a ~1.4ghz with a geforce4 ti, well over 15 frames per second. And that's about the standard for computers nowadays, if you comp isn't that good then you probably shouldn't be trying to play newer games in general. The lag isn't bad either, I got disconnected maybe twice in the whole time I played, which was probably a total of 15 hours... I had way more problems with games like Everquest and Anarchy Online when they first came out.

Whew! A few more weeks to finish up FFX and figure out the cabling situation for my network adapter then. :D |

I've talked with a dozen or so people who beta tested it. They said it's kind of bland and gets very boring after a week, nothing to do, nothing innovative or interesting, just an average product.
|
I thought there was plenty to do, i put at least 15 hours into that game, and i only did one side quest, none of the main quests, or any thing like that, i just ran around leveled, talked to people, tried to get better aromor, and learning how to play. No one even beat it on the beta and it was out for a good 5 months. This game seems to be full of things to do, i cant imagine it getting boring after a week.

I just can't justify paying for a game more than once.

Another MMORPG another pass for me. I echo the sentiments expressed above about paying for a game once. I can't justify paying monthly for something like that. I think I'll stick to single player or lan games thank you.

I paid ten bucks a month for Asheron's Call, and that game kept me playing for about three and a half years... I figure, I usually buy console games for $40-$50, and they keep me entertained for a month or two, and I spent about a total of $450 on Asheron's Call and it kept me entertained for over 40 months. The money to time ratio isn't bad at all. :)
There's always online PC games, but all of the massively multiplayer games have monthly charges. Regular multiplayer games like Counter-Strike and BF1942 are cool, but it's pretty much the same thing over and over... There's no real feeling of progression through the game, just logging on, killing some people, logging off. The satisfaction involved with leveling up and earning new equipment and spells, etc. in a MMORPG is much greater than shooting guys with rifles over and over, in my opinion. Then there's games like Neverwinter Nights, which has free online play but is far from massively multiplayer. I would highly recommend NWN if you don't want to pay monthly for an online rpg, but it seems as if Bioware is planning on releasing expansion packs for the game every other month now. :) Seriously though, I haven't even bought shadows of undrentide yet, and they're already talking about the next expansion pack. Most of the good servers require that you buy the expansion packs to play on their servers, so you're going to have to shell out extra money after purchasing the original game anyway. If you don't want to pay a monthly fee after buying a game, that's fine. But the monthly fee is well justified. I could go into a rant about the fact that companies need to constantly maintain their servers and keep a staff working on the game 24/7, but pretty much everybody already knows that. When you're paying the monthly fee, you're paying for an extremely immersive online experience, much more than any of the games that offer free online play. You're paying for constant updates and bugfixes, new weapons and armor, new spells and skills, new areas and monsters. Unless you're playing everquest, most MMORPG's offer new content with their patches that most games would require an expansion pack for. Everquest is the exception, because they enjoy squeezing every last drop of money out of their subscribers by releasing an expansion pack for every single addition of new content, and actually getting away with it, but I won't get into that right now. :) |
2 more days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
cant freakin WAIT
|
as a former beta tester for the game I had an outstanding time with the game.
Pros - Great class system Feels like a japanese rpg. Wonderful commerce systems. Cons - doesn't look different if running it at 1024x768 to 1600x1200...when you run a fixed resed lcd it's annoying. Mouse feels like it was added after the fact. Simple compared to other rpgs. For those who don't believe me, here ya go. http://www.fractalcanvas.net/trentchau/beta.jpg I ran the game on a 3.2 p4 abit ic7 2 gig ddr 3200 radeon 9800. Didn't have an problems with the game at all other then the fact that running it at high res doesn't make a difference. |
the way you pay for extra characters is kinda sucks
|
Yeah, thats really stupid. I dont mind paying for matenince and server updates, things like that. But paying for extra characters is kinda milking people for what they got.
|
It's out now, but I can't decide if I should get it or not.
|
cant beat EQ

May I ask why is it that running at a higher resolution makes no difference? Does it only just support 800x600?
I'm looking foward to this game as well. I was very surprised when I ehard about it, their release is very hush hush. I'm probably going to order it on EBWorld tonight if there isn't a real big demand for it. Seems pretty underground to me. |
I have the box, unfortuently I'm still waiting on the absolutely massive patch to download before I can play. I hear it takes 10 hours on a 56k.
|
Yeah, I read on IGN that it will take at least an hour on broadband. Have fun!

FFXI synthesis combos?
Anyone have a good website or know any synthesis combinations? And anyone know which guild would be a good one to join? And one more... anyone have some good tips on anything?
|
Check out IGN's FFXI Vault. They have a ton of info on it there. I've never played it (waiting for IGN's review), but I will if it gets favorable scores.

Thanks alot Lasereth that helped me out loads, Usually Allakhazam or Stratics has lots of info like that but not yet, so thanks :D
|
I used to go to Allakhazam's for EQ info when I played over a year ago. Glad to hear he's still up-to-date. Easily the best MMORPG site I had ever been to.
-Lasereth |
I have been having the absolute TIME of my life playing FFXI. OMG, it is truly amazing.
