SSX 3
The SSX games have always seemed to be pretty solid, and going from initial reviews it seems 3 has outdone the previous games in the series.
A few reviews can be found here: I picked up the game earlier tonight, but will be going to a friends tonight to play it, so I haven't been able to give personal feedback yet. If any of you get the game, want to discuss it, or even post up a review, please use this thread. I watched a few movies and read the above reviews.. And it seems to be a very solid game that is much more than just an add-on to SSX 2.

I got it today. We played it for about an hour straight. The feel is different from Tricky, just as the feel from the first SSX to Tricky was different. It's better in a way, but it will take time to get used to if you played Tricky to death (I did). The tricks are even MORE insane than Tricky. There are a lot of very, very nice innovations in SSX3. One happens to be the ability to "hold out" Uber Tricks. In other words, when you start an Uber Trick, if you hold the same buttons down, the trick continues as long as you have air-time, increasing points and making the badass-o-meter off the scale.
Just by playing it for an hour I can tell that it's easily the best of the series. I can't wait to play it more! -Lasereth

I love this game. Its better than Tricky or the first one in a lot of ways. I'm still trying to finish the first peak with all gold medals. Its a lot harder than you'd think. As so, the new manual type move makes for some huge point combos in the half-pipe. So far the highest combo I've pulled off is a 63. What about the rest of you guys?

I just played it for a few hours straight. This game is the best of the series, end of story. Holy SHIT it's awesome. I love doing the combos like Prophecy said. I think I got up in the twenties with pure Uber Tricks on one of the Half-Pipe levels. My thumbs hurt.
![]() I love the new hand-springs that you can do on rails. That's badass! Makes it easy to link combos as well. -Lasereth

I hadn't even noticed your stats lowered when you put stuff on ppl. Is that what those bar are for? I can't figure out how they work exactly

The left bar is the bar that is your current stats and the right bar is what your stats will be after you equip the item. In other words, if your right-bar increases when you equip something, leave it on!

Hey guys and gals.
I picked up the game yesterday, but didn't play it until evening when I went to a friends.. We played 2 player and then took turns going through some of the one player "Conquer the Mountain" mode. The game is suerb. Really, it is. The graphics are breathtaking, and there is zero draw-in.. The framerate also moves along at a speedy pace. I have yet to see slowdown in abundance, and that is amazing, considering that there isn't draw in or even "fuzzyness" on distant objects. Instead of commenting on the sound, graphics, and gameplay in depth, I will just say they are all superb. It is an incredibly well done game that I have been unable to find any negatives for at this point. The aspect of the game that I love and would like to take a minute to focus on is the incredible amount of freedom this game allows. You can access the various events in the game through menus (like the earlier versions of SSX), or you can go into "Free Ride" and work your way down the mountain, encountering exits (think highway road system) that you can take to a specific race or challenge. Also, just before entering the start area, you can branch left and take a "Free" run down the course, without opponents, time, or scoring. It's basically a free run down the course.. A way of trying it out before doing it officially against opponents and the clock. The races themselves are very well done. So far my favorite race has to be the one that involves me racing my rival down the peak.. No set course.. They put you on a mountain top with him and the first one to the bottom wins. This is a simply amazing experience, because you can literally go anywhere.. There are huge drops and ample opportunities to bust tricks off of these drops. If I had to pick just one thing I loved about this game it would be the amount of freedom it provides its users. You can work your way through the game via menus and such, but the more fun way is to just start out in "Free Ride" and snowboard to the various locations. The last race on peak 1 has you racing down the entire peak against other racers.. I haven't done it yet, but it sounds incredible, given the immense size of the peaks.. And there are three of them. Characters have a ton of unlockables that actually help them, but also look neat. Attributes are increased through earnings, and that is also how one buys cool items that both benefit the boarder and make him/her look spiffy. Honestly, the game is just amazing. I went online last night and checked it out, but didn't play, as I would get owned. There are lobbies, Quick Play options, and the rooms were quite full for being release day. I am not sure what else to say, except that this is the one game that has lived up to the hype. Generally hype (especially over-hype) kills games, but in this case SSX 3 came out on top, and that this makes it a true gem of a game. I have it for PS2, but I have read it is solid for the Cube and XBox as well.

I'm still very early in the game, and the only accessory I have access to (and am using) is the Energy Bar. I did change up his gear a little, but I haven't bought any, as I am spending the money I earn on attributes..

I'm playing as Mac. All of his stats are at 9 out of 10, and he has a skateboard attached to his back that increased the stats BIG time.

I just beat all of Peak 1 and 2, and all of the regular races on Peak 3. I have one more track to beat on the "trickstyle" area of Peak 3 and I'll be done besides the Freestyle challenges which are very, very in-depth. Mac is now with every stat at 11 (the skateboard accessory allows the stats to go above 10). I would be playing now, but my thumbs burn.

Lasereth have you figured out how to do pipe transfers? I see all those pipes on peak 2 but I can't figure out how to get out of the one you drop into on default.

I didn't know that pipe transfers were possible. I'm guessing you're talking about switching pipes on the super-pipe levels? If it's the same button as handplants, then that's circle on the PS2 controller. I'll try it out when I get back!

The soundtrack is very good.
You can view and sample it HERE. These aren't all the songs, and the site offered more before the game's release. It seems now they cut the available songs down to a CD sampler.. There are more songs in the game than on the site above, but it will at least give an idea of a few of the artists in the game. Take care.

Instead of starting a new thread, I'll just take this one.
I'm looking to get this game, but I don't know which version to get. Should it be Gamecube or PS2. Please, no fan-boy responses "Gamecube is for kids." "Ps2 is old and dated." I'm just interested in what the strengths are for the game. I rented it for the cube, but I own tricky on PS2. So I'm a little torn. Thanks Guys |

The game is also online on PS2, but I am not sure if that applies to you or not. I'd go with the PS2 version, primarily because the controls must be better than the Cube's (primarily because the controls are so nice on PS2, I can't imagine them being better with another layout). I haven't played SSX 3 for a little while now, and I may try to get back into it. It's a very good game, but also a challenging game (in a good way) at the later stages. It's easily the best of the series, and I have no complaints about the PS2 version of it. Take care.

I'd get the PS2 version as well. I've played it on Xbox, and the controls are butchered after playing the PS2 version. I imagine it would be the same way with the GC version...having four shoulder pads and the quad-button combo is simply the perfect combination for SSX. It's good on GC and XBox, but I still have to recommend it for PS2 because the controls are so damned perfect.

Do NOT play the SSX games on ANYTHING but PS2. Please. Everytime you play SSX on GameCube or Xbox, God kills a kitten.
Seriously though, PS2 has the PERFECT controls and setup for it. Take my recommendation. I have near a world record on one of the tracks (tricky mode).
