Yes, very good. The storyline is among the best ever, the ending just socks you in the gut too.

Mafia was definately a great game.
Didnt it get GOTY awards? Pretty sure it did.. Like said before, one of the few games, where the gameplay, the story, and the graphics were all top notch. And the plot twists were always keeping you on your toes Anyone who wants to buy a new game and has a decent comp, get Mafia! |

I loved this game. Top notch action, the driving around town could be a little tiring as cops will chase if you speed, but the rest was spectacular.

Although I pretty much have the same thing to say as everybody else, it can't be said enough. It is by far one of the best modern games I've played. The storyline, characters, and the general feel of the game sucks you in.
Technically it's amazing as well. The city actually lives, and believably so. Many compare it to GTA3 and such, but the feel is much different. Having to do such things as obey the speed limit and traffic lights essentially forces you to view the city in a more realistic fashion, which I believe heightens the immersiveness of the game. I could almost go on for hours about this game, though probably in a more sensical manner then the above post. Just make sure you have a decent computer to run it. Finally, if the race level is giving you problems, just slow down a lot into all of the turns. |

LOVED that game, although the freeride missions were damned hard. Like hat one where you have to drive across the bridge while a blimp is bombing you. Anyways, still a great game.

AWESOME game!
I have to admit, I had to cheat to beat the race - I truly believe it's impossible for most people. Otherwise excellent! And, yes, that freeride mission with the bombing blimp is incredibely hard! If it didn't win a GOTY award, it should have. Although the feel is different, it's WAY better than GTA3! Best story I've seen in a looong time - like a movie!

To the previous two posters, I managed to beat the race without cheating, but it took me countless attempts, and I had several frustrating occasions when I would complete 4 laps in the lead only to crash out on one of the trickier corners. I believe I actually danced around when I won.
The trick is to try and get ahead early, and then to try not to take the corners too quickly. Your car seems to romp away from everyone on the straights, so you can afford to take it easy round corners. A cool, calm approach will see you right. And to the other guy, I've now actually managed to get through the rooftop level with only 10 health, and onto the church. Did you collect the health on the top floor of the church before going down the stairs? There's a rifle somewhere along the way you can pick up to ice those gangsters at the funeral. |

I'm playing through Mafia again for fun (or for frustration sometimes it seems)
I got the new patch, and things seem a lot different this time. 1. There was a mission where you had to assassinate a politician with a sniper rifle, I really liked this mission even though it was hard as hell. But with the patch, its simply gone! Bummer. 2. There was a mission where you had to kill the other Don when he was getting away via airplane, and you had to shoot it down. Now, there is a new map, where you just follow him on windy roads, and then you bump him off a broken bridge to his death.. cheap! I dont know why they did this.. maybe because of 9/11, the sniper shootings, something, but then again the game came out after 9 /11 didnt it? All I can say is too much censorship for the sensitive people. |

That is exactly the same experience I had with the race. Your advice is dead on. One of the best games I ever played! And for once a game had an ending that was worth the wait. I also loved the ending in GTA III, but the GTA VC ending sucked. What a let down. |

The main thing that bugs me about Mafia, is that the cars (90%) are SLOW as hell.
And to top it off, their handling is the worst thing ever. And the other thing I hate is that the computer cheats. Like if you have to chase after another car, I notice that they can drive straight through big telephone poles, and they accelerate really fast, even in the slowest cars in the game. Very frustrating at times, but a great game. Very nice faces on the characters too. Lots of detail. |

wondash speaks true words. These vehicles are based on real cars in that time period. They shouldnt perform better than your dad's VW bus. I admit, it was a tad frustrating at times only because I've been spoiled on games like Gran Tourismo and the like, but its not like it was a bug in the game.
As for the race. I found it was *way* easier when using a gamepad to control the car. Keyboard controls for that makes it incredibly difficult. |

Love the game, the problem is that its realistic to a fault at times. The race nearly gave me an anyeurism after failing for the 30th time or so. But other than that it was amazing.
