Has anyone here ever played MUD?
Have any of you ever playd MUD (multi-user dungeon)? They were entirely text based role-playing games usually played online with others.
I spent a fair amount of time playing MUDs, and have had some pretty powerful characters. I played primarily on NetherWorld, but also checked out Amaron and Phidar. Netherworld was great because it had a nice remort/reinc system that allowed your character to gain more powerful races and skills with time (and levels). Phidar had a really nice ASCII map (colored) and was pretty advanced. How about the rest of you? Did you play MUDs, and if so, which onces? |
Tried to... played ROCK II, which wasn't nearly as engaging at ROCK I... man, i miss that game...
Anyway, it was too much reading for my poor brain. That and I never really got the hang of all the shortcut key commands or whatever. /me goes 'n' |
During one of my co-ops I was introduced to a MUD that I played on regularily. Can't remember the name of it right now but I believe it is still around. Loved playing the game..and wasn't doing anything at work anyway.
What was the name of that MUD..darn..now I have to go out and search...be back later! |
Hmm...I'm thinking it was a MUD called ShadowMUD but I can't seem to get on right now and find out for sure...great MUD though.

I have and still am quite active in muds. I started playing muds back in 1993. I was a player and a mid-level immortal for many years on a mud called Realms of Despair. After I retired from their I started playing the Godwars code extensively and am one of the owners of the longest running Godwars muds :)
|
I used to play a bunch when I was an intern at a software company back in college. It was a good way to waste time without being super obvious that you aren't working. I can't remember the name of the one I played on though.

The best MUD out there is Discworld MUD. It may be more enjoyable if you have read the Discworld series, but even without that it's a unique fun experience, excellently crafted with a great sense of humor.

used to play a mud called apocalypse....
took up way to much of my time in high school.. I'm cured now... just hope I can keep away from star wares galaxies... |
I played in the mud once. Got real dirty.
Actually, I never got into one, but 85% of my friends play Merentha. |
hey metalgeek, are you referring to Godwars apocalypse?
|
I have for a little bit... very little
|
Quite a while ago... Sojourn, Medievia, HoloMUD, SneezyMUD, Realms of Despair...
Various MUSHes, MUXes, and MOOs as well (even FurryMUCK once - I didn't stay though ;))... I feel old, and I'm not even 25 yet. :( |

Now I play Realm of Magic, an English-language mud based in Germany. It's not as level-intensive as Rock, and more based in the classic "D&D" theme. I've been playing that for about three years on and off. I'm also kinda-sorta-half-assedly writing a custom MUD codebase just for fun & practice. I don't intend on releasing it or even putting it to use, just working on my coding. |
Played in college (96), the whole semester I went before ditching it for marriage and kids, left off til we had a computer of our own (99) and then I played on the first newbie friendly one I found... Jellybean! *grins* I played a couple others that my PKer friend brought me to, but Jellybean is the only name that sticks with me. My husband brought home evercrack and said it's like a MUD with graphics... I wanted nothing to do with it... and here I am a year later, evercrack addict and no MUDs :-/
|
I am a reformed MUD addict... The first mud I ever played was called Core 2696, which I eventually became a coder for. Two years later it shut down and was reopened as Core 2648 and, sadly, it sucked. :(
During my time coding on Core 2696 I played a different mud on the side called Myths and Legends, and it was a pretty small mud but it had so many features that you couldn't find on other muds, and the game was actually pretty fast-paced compared to most muds where you have to sit around typing for hours to gain a single level. Now I'm aware that muds aren't all about gaining levels, but there's some points where in order to enjoy playing the game, you have to be powerful enough to be able to survive. A lot of muds try to add to the difficulty by making it so you have play for hours and hours, or even days, to gain a single level. It's just tedious... I enjoy playing on a mud where I can steadily gain levels and move up to more difficult areas, so I can feel like I'm actually getting somewhere in the game... Anyway, when Core 2648 came up I pretty much moved to Myths and Legends full-time, and eventually THAT mud shut down, and I kind of drifted from mud to mud trying to find something that was good. I found a pretty good ROM based mud called Purple Dragon, that had a built-in ASCII automapper to add kind of a graphical feeling to the game, and I enjoyed it a lot, but just my luck, that mud shut down too. A few months later I found another mud called JungleMUD, where a lot of players from Purple Dragon migrated to, and then JungleMUD shut down as well. I haven't really seriously played on any muds since then. Sometimes I log on a few Nightmare-based muds like Merentha and ShadowMUD, but they just don't feel the same as the other muds I used to play, so I can't enjoy them nearly as much. I've tried to create my own mud a couple times, but without a coding staff it's a tedious and seemingly futile effort. So, I stopped MUDing. |
Try a godwars :)
|
If I could find a godwars mud that actually stood out from the others, I would play it. But every godwars mud I have played has that "cookie cutter" feeling. Like I've done it thirty times before on other muds.
I have a soft spot for Nightmare muds, but since Descartes (the creator of the Nightmare MUDlib) is an asshole, he decided to not let anybody else use his mudlib. So there's only a handful of nightmare-based muds out there, and I've played them all, and the really good ones have either A: Changed so drastically that they're not fun anymore, B: Have way too many people on it without enough areas to accomodate those people, or C: Shut down. |
Try mudhole.spodnet.uk.com 6660 it is the original godwars, but it is developing in its own direction quite nicely.
it's back up again after an unscheduled downtime. |
does anyone still use MUDs? I've never done them, I wouldn't mind trying them out with some fellow TFPers
|
Muds are very much alive and well, there's nothing like them. I've been hopelessly addicted for close on 10 years (or whenever it was i got my very first dial up access!)
|
I play on a Diogen mud, It's nice. Huge Map, Not too crowded and the Gods visit often. Very neat
|
is Diogen a codebase? not familiar with that one.
|
The Jungle MUD is back up, and it's probably my favorite mud that's up at the moment... although I wish Myths and Legends was back up :(
|
I play on a MUD called Realms of the Dragon...AWESOME...and constatnly expanding...I have been playing on their for OVER 10 years now...
I just love mud, because I can get away with it at work, when the boss comes by it looks like I am working in a Unix shell, so noone is the wiser...:-) |
Im a fan of major mud myself

Major MUD ex-con in the hizzouse!!!11~~!
|
I sure did, back in like 1991 through like 1994, I mudded on Batmud (www.bat.org). I created an area with the theme of songs by Rush (Fountain of Lamneth, the Trees, and By-tor and the Snow Dog were the main areas). Lots of fun for LOTS of time.
My area is still up and running 11 years later too =) |
I've never played one, but I'm about to check out some of the links people have posted, sounds like great fun! With these, irc and tfp I'll have no life AT ALL :O
|
Love to mud. Especially Diku. Hate PKing, unless it's a user-set flag. Realm of choice: Apocalypse V [ apocmud.org ]
Currently playing an envy-based new mud from the morons @ nhbradio.com [ mud.nhbradio.com:4000 ] And for the love of god people, DON'T USE TELNET TO MUD. Get yourself a CLIENT. [ And not this zMud bullshit either. ] |
