Adventure game recommendations?

Hi. I'm looking for some non-action oriented adventures games to play with my girlfriend. She says violence and shooting should not be the focal point of the game. We checked out the Syberia demo, it was okay, but too short to make an impression. I think a very cartoony game might be fun to play, but I don't know what games to check out. I'm turning to you guys now.

Monkey Island

Every one of the series.

Funny as heck, should be a lot of fun.

I do hear that Syberia was quite good, I haven't tried it personally.

If you're looking for cartoony then you should check out .Hack//infection.

It's a single player game based on a multiplayer game from an anime.

Isn't .hack more of a RPG than adventure game? Personally I don't know any adventure games off the top of my head that does haven't combat as the focus... Is there any other genre you're looking for? Adventure to me means traveling, exploring and getting rid of monsters.

I'd say Sam & Max, but it only runs sound on DOS.. I hear they are making a new one... A must buy when it comes out.

Yeah Monkey Island is great. I got Day of the Tentacle to work on my computer with sound. Another great game.

Grim Fandango. Another LucasArts classic.

My GF loves the Broken Sword games, so you might want to give them a whirl.
Theres also a great one called Toonstruck, starring Christopher "Back To The Future" Lloyd.

Gah, how could I forget Grim Fandango, that was an excellent one. Most of these adventure games are going to be in the bargin bins of most stores, which is good for you. Unfortuently, there aren't many new and inventive adventure games being churned out.

Others include Gabrial Knight and Alone in the Dark, but those are more geared towards suspense then comedy.

I'm downloading the demo right now. We downloaded the demos for realMyst and Escape from Monkey Island. We prefer the mouse interface. I think I will get her a controller so she can play these adventure games and maybe her Sonic the Hedgehog games.

That's another one I pointed out to her. I couldn't find a playable demo though.

Suspense games are cool too. Horror or scary games are cool, but it isn't really cool if we have to do a lot of frantic running or shooting all the time.

Okay, we're not digging the keyboard/gamepad interface of the Lucasarts games (GF,MI). Right now, I suppose we're looking for mouse interface games.

Cool girl you have to want to play sonic and adventure games.

Gabrial Knight doesn't focus on shooting, I'm not sure about the newest Alone in the Dark.

The Longest Journey is a new ones that's nice.

Also, you'll want ot play leisure suit larry with her, the last one was Love for Sail, very funny and sexual, if your relationship is at that point.

I only have a bit of experience in adventure games, try doing some googling and look for top10's, etc. You can find big reviews that'll help you out.

I'd reconsider and try to get used to the gamepad/keyboard interface. GF and MI are the best and funniest adventures available, they're really not to be missed.

Maybe somebody else can help you configure your controls?

You won't regret it.

It was mentioned a few times before but Grim Fandango was a lot of fun. (pretty decent length too)

One that was only mentioned briefly was The Longest Journey.
My g/f LOVED that game. It is a really long adventure game that'll keep you occupied for some time. It has a really good story and a female main character that my g/f related to very well. It makes you want to play all the time!

One that was not mentioned: Sanitarium. (yes about a nutcase )
Very good story, a little shorter that than TLJ but very well thought out. When you finish this one, let it rest for a month or so and play it again... It becomes even better!

Others:

Discworld noir: Like the title sounds : a dark setting, a little surreal
Syberia (as mentioned.. story is a little on the short side, but that just makes you hungry for part two, currently in production)
Blade runner - like the movie. decent game
