X-Box Vs PS2???
Which console do you guys think is better, X-Box or Playstation 2?
I studied both before deciding on an X-Box, simply because it is a better machine in terms of spec it had more hard drive space and u can plug 4 controllers straight into the machine rather than getting ripped off and having to buy a multi-tap! The graphics are also slighly better. I think alot of people just jumped on the PS2 Bandwagon simply because of its reputation from the first console. Just my opinion but let me know what u guys think Fascs |
how many fun games do you own for your xbox again?
especially since you are in the UK..this should REALLY hit home for you. YOU CHOSE THE WRONG CONSOLE! |
Plenty!!!
Well actually i have plenty of fun games, what makes you think that living in the uk means i wouldn't have any fun games?, if your going to make a point at least get it across!
At the moment i'm playing: Splinter Cell Sega GT 2002 Fusion Frenzy(Great 4 player game) Soul Caliber 2 Hitman 2 Internation Super Star Soccer 2 Winning Eleven In England you know we do have the cabability to have our X-boxes modified and we do have the internet so we can download games to play! Jesus Christ, simply saying u chose the wrong console hehe - yeah good point? |
Splinter Cell came out on all of the next gen consoles, including the PS2.
Gran Turismo > Sega GT. Soul Calibur 2 = out on PS2 and Gamecube also. Hitman 2 = on PS2 also. And those soccer games... I don't really care about them. Soccer's dumb anyway. Anyway, the Xbox's specs and hard drive space do not change the actual quality of the game at all. The PS2 has much better games than the Xbox, which is the reason why it's outselling Xbox significantly. And also, why did you ask what the better console was when you were already convinced that the Xbox was better? Looks like somebody was looking for an argument. |
CyCo PL makes good points. Infact, no bad ones. I don't know why your calling people dicks when you asked someone for an opinion. Jeez man, look at the numbers, PS2 has more games, sells more ( for a reason).
|
I didnt know they Had ISS for X-box. I remember playing that on the N64. I havent seen it anywhere in my town, oh well.
|
ps2 does have a lot of good games but the graphics are starting
to look outdated... built in 4 player for x box is nice but there aren't that many good 4 player games for the xbox which is why i only have 2 controllers so far... (for coop halo, still the most fun that can be had shootin stuff... with castle wolfenstein coming in at a close 2nd..) so far the most fun 4 player games have been on the gamecube so far... but apparently you don't consider the gamecube... on the other hand xbox online stuff so far has been much better than playstations online stuff already there has been 2 new maps for wolfenstein... can't help you as far as sports games go... really, you can't go wrong picking a console these days, everythin has its advantages and disadvantages... the best thing to do is pick one based on the games they've got out right now... definitely pick up halo if you have at least one friend to play it co-operative with and you like first person shooters even a tiny bit... also knights of the old republic is supposed to be good.. alright enough from me... |
Xbox doesnt have that many quality exclusive games. I'm seeing Halo and Buffy... PS2, damn, Devil May Cry, Final Fantasies, Tekken and GTA.
Just my 2 cents |
Fair enuf! good points made, just in my opinion the games that i have played on both consoles have played better on the x-box!
Peace Farcs! |
I liked my xBox up until the dvd drive went mad and wouldnt let me play any new games. It now just says "Your disk is dirty or damaged" Looked online and I saw i was not alone. $99 to get fixed or $80 more for a new console, err how I hate M$.
|
Right now XBox has two good games, Dead or Alive 3 and DOA Extreme Beach Volleyball. PS2 has so many awesome games that the XBox cant compete in my opinion. Though the XBox does have superb graphics. If they could get more companies(Square/Enix along with a lot of others) to make games for them, XBox would be great. And i do like XBox Live a lot but i will just have to wait just incase Microsoft buys out a lot more companies or they just give up on this system since it isnt doing as well as they had hoped. As of now the XBox is subpar and the Gamecube's graphics look just as good as the XBox's. Also the PS2 has so many more fun games than the XBox.
|
I chose the Xbox because I hate memory cards, I like playing multiplayer, I really enjoy Halo, and I have never liked the PS controls. Despite all the PS fans' cries of exclusive games, I haven't seen any that would convince me to buy a PS2. If I was going to buy a system just for the exclusive games, it would be the GC.
|
I like my PS2. It's tough, it does what I want, and it is reliable. A friend's X-box crapped out 7 months after he bought it. I gut my PS2 days after its' initial Stateside release and mine is still going strong.
|
I have both. and yes the PS2 may sell more and have a bigger selection of games.... BLAH BLAH BLAH but the thing that puts XBOX over the top for me is XBOX LIVE. and looking at my collection of games, i have 4 ps2 games, SOCOM, Vice city, grand Turismo, and Ace combat 4. all of those games are ok and i enjoy playing them however I have 22 Xbox games and out of those 8 are Live enabled and those 8 games are what i play most. I also like the fact that a friend may be playing a diferent game and can send me an invite then all i have to do is accept, change the disk and presto i am connected to my friends game. maybe i have not picked up the best PS2 games to compare with my XBOX games but I still prefer my XBOX. I also like the XBOX controller better than the PS2 controller however i know that is a personal prefrence. anyway this has been my 2 cents worth on the issue.
|
ps2 all the way
I'm thinking ps2. xbox has like 4 games i wouldn't mind playing. and all of those are slated for PC or ps2 anyway so i guess its kind of a moot point to buy an xbox. they have some hardware issues too. anyone who bought the first ones off the line definitly don't have working ones anymore and M$ isn't replacing the defective hardware. that i've heard of anyway.
|
Games, games, games.
It's all about the games. Don't buy a system because of what the system can do. Buy a system because of what the system can play! Remember, all those specs are just potential until someone comes along and actually uses them. And usually by the time that happens, a next generation system comes along anyway. For me, it was a simple choice of picking the Nintendo GameCube over all others. Not because it had any superior hardware (which it doesn't), but because it had many games that I could only find on the GC. Metroid Prime, Zelda:WW, Star Fox, a host of original RE games, plus you could still play all the games that are out for all systems. As a bonus, I later found out that it could connect with my GBASP to unlock special features in certain games, making games even more fun. This is exactly what I was looking for in a system, and Nintendo provided for my needs. Whether you're of the same opinion, only you can answer, but just don't look at a system and think "Well, system A can run 433 MHz faster than system B can, therefore system A will obviously be a far better choice". You could end up being sorely disappointed later on when you end buying a $300+ paperweight, and nothing to play on it. If you have any doubts, just go to the local video rental, or video game store, and look over the titles that are available for all the systems. It'll help you make a better informed decision, and who knows, you might be surprised at what you find out. Edit: Incidentally, that "System A vs System B" example was real. The XBox was System A, and PSX2 was System B, and we all know who's outselling who. :D |
i tihnk its personal preference. I have an XBox but I play PS2 often. Halo is a great game, but so is Vice City. It's a toss up. As long as EA Sports makes games for both systems, I am happy......
|

PS2 has better games and more games and if you have kids there's pretty much jackshit on the Box that'll cater their needs unless you think a round of Dead to Rights is ok ;) p.s. I will admit the Box is a good machine with excellent networking capabilities, but that's it, for games it's nothing but a big black meh-chine. |
Re: ps2 all the way

Edit: BTW Gamecube is an awesome machine. I have my GC and PS2 and cant decide which is better. I love them both. |
I like my PS2, its held up through a lot of abuse by siblings and technologically challenged parents. The controller is a HELL of a lot better for sports games, and most games in general. The analog sticks are durable too. The graphics on the XBox are superior, but the PS2 looks almost as good if you have an S-Cable and the same if you have composite video cables. Talking about getting ripped off with the Multitap, you HAVE to buy the DVD remote to be able to play DVDs. Because of its durability, large library of quality games, and better gameplay, I have to go with the PS2 on this one.
|
i get this question all day...i work in a videogame store...xbox and ps2 are both around the same levels...if any id rate the ngc the lowest due to the lack of games and shitty controller design...
pros for the xbox are: the hardware itself, 8gig hd, online play, 4 controller slots, good system link...cons: bulk, no out of box dvd playback, first gen controller, xbox live, advanced av pack...heres for ps2...pros: out of box dvd playback, optical outlet, selection of games, great controller...cons: no harddrive, no modem, even shittier online than xbox, 2 controller ports, who uses the firewire anyways?, hardware is a little lacking now...gc pros: hardware, 4 controller ports, ergonomic controller and wavebird, nintendo, gba linkup, good games are GOOD, cheapest...cons: lack of games, controller sucks balls for fighting games,no modem (only like 1 online game anyways),no dvd playback, did i mention lack of software?... first gen xbox's did have problems...but so did ps2...so who cares? if a game comes out for every system...i buy it for xbox just because the hardware is just simply better...so it performs better...every system also has their own games that arent coming out for any other system...fuck it...just get all the systems...you wont have to deal with this question. p.s. pirating video games sucks you cheap bastards |
GTA VC is still the best console game out there and also love the Tony Hawk series. Furthermore I've yet to see a convincing racing game on the Xbox.
yes PS2 has got 20x the amount of good games but try this simple test. Get hold of a PS2 and an Xbox run Tiger Woods 2003 on both and observe - its not the PS2 version you'll still be playing in 10 hours time!!! |
Buy both or be happy with what you've got. They're both fantastic consoles.
|
awww.. you gamecube fans make me proud. I love my cube, but the lack of great new gtames is starting to annoy me. New games that are "must buy" games come out for it about once every 6 months.. that's waay too long of a wait compaired to the competiton. If i ever got an exbox, I would mod that sucker real quick because there arent many games out for it that i am interested in. Xbox live is a great idea, but personally I am not interested to pay for games i've already paid for once.. just to play them online with people. The only exception I would make would be for PSO, but i can play that online on my gamecube. Perhaps i was hard on the Xbox, but it appears to me that MS was sorta interested into getting into the videgame business.. but arent 100 percent commited to it yet. It seems really clear that it's all about putting out half rushed games and getting your money upfont, then fixing "bugs" via Xbox live later on. Dont even get me started on EA games' business model.
Despite my personal feelings for the Xbox, if it has the games you like..then go ahead and enjoy your purchase. It's just not for me. p.s. The problems with the gamecube could fill 2 pages.. so i'm not just bagging the box. they ALL have their pros and cons. |
i think X-box is alot better....but there the gta deliema
|
playstation 2. Basicly because of vice city.
|
xbox is getting vice city...entitled just "vice city"
|
Quote:
I still think the PS2 is an all round better console. |
It's all what someone before. It's all in what suits your wants and needs. Me, I love the graphics on my X-Box, I wasn't entirely impressed by the graphics on my friends PS2. I haven't seen a Game Cube yet, so I won't comment on it other then there are a few games on it that I'd like to play ie: Metroid Prime.
Being forced to buy the DVD remote kind of sucked, but so what? I could say in response to that I have a built-in high speed modem with my X-Box, but that wouldn't really matter. My X-Box suits my needs and has games I'll play and that's all that matters. |
The only reasons to get Xbox in my opinion are KOTOR and Halo. Both of which will be coming to PC before the end of the year. I have a lot PS2 games and many of them are great.
SOCOM is the best online console game for any system in my opinion. GTA games, MGS2, FFX, R&C, GT3, ICO, Xenosaga, Dark Cloud 2, Kingdom Hearts, and Suikoden 3 are all really good games in my ipinions and are only available on PS2. Well except for GTA games on PC and MGS2 Substance on Xbox. |
Its different for differnet people, pc gamers would prefer the xbox, more fps games and xbox live, however PS2 has loads of games, i've got a ps2, but wouldn't mind an xbox.
|
I think xbox might have the better hardware...that's a big might, but I think the Playstation 2 has much better games, so far at least.
If I was given a choice of which to but I would probably go with the ps2. But for now it's just the pc for me! |
I bought the xbox because I wanted a console that will last, when my xbox becomes obsolete to the point there are no games I would play for it. It will sit in my car serving up 40gigs or mp3s and divX movies along with playing a wide range of emulators. The xbox is the better choice because of the community.
LONG LIVE THE XODUS NO SOLDER CHIP. |
All I can say is the we have an XBox and a Playstation2. My son begged to get a PS2 since none of his friends have an XBox. So he got his PS2 for Christmas.
I got my XBox connected to XBox Live and he was so impressed with it that he went out and bought an XBox and a Live connection with his own money. The PS2 hasn't been used since that day. (Ok, ok, I start it up and play Vice City once in a while.) If you like playing games online then XBox is the only way to go. We play against each other all the time. Great online games: Ghost Recon Mech Assault Midtown Madness 3 Unreal Championship Moto GP2 You can also get a lot of new stuff and bug fixes online with a lot of the games. In my opinion, Xbox blows away PS2 for online stuff and graphics. Sure PS2 has a LOT of games out but I can't think of any that would make me buy the thing for myself. I'm not a big fan of Jap RPG's and that's the only thing it really is good for. The PS2 fanboys can flame me all they want but I can bet they don't have an Xbox at home to compare the two like I do. |
A couple more opinions to add since reading through all the posts:
PS2's SOCAL sounds interesting but a friend I play Ghost Recon online with said that it sucked. He said it had too much of an arcade feel to it. That lost my interest... I hear a lot of complaints about the Xbox controller... I love the thing. I think it fits in my hands just fine. When I switch over to the PS2 my hands start to hurt trying to squeeze them together to reach the buttons. I think they made it too small. The first analog version released for the PSOne was slightly bigger and that one worked great but was redesigned later because people were complaining. Maybe I just have big hands? Lastly, Vice City is an OK game. I think it would look great on the Xbox. The PS2 has too little internal RAM and the load times really ruin it for me. I hate when I'm racing over a bridge with cops on my butt and *POP* (loading...loading...loading...). When the game kicks back in I usually crash into something trying to get conrol back. Really irritating! |
I got my X-Box this last christmas. It just crapped out completely today after maybe forty hours of real use. I called tech support and they said that my warranty had expired and that they were going to charge one hundred dollars to fix my machine regardless of the problem.
Fuck microsoft. |
Lemme fan the flames of the fanboy holy war.
Get a Gamecube pros 1) cheaper 2) better graphics than the PS2 3) better good game/bad game ratio 4) lots of fun games 5) now bundled with the Gameboy Advance player = lots MORE fun games to play (if you can handle the graphics downgrade) cons 1) smaller library than either the Xbox and the PS2 I got a GC and I've enjoyed it. The only reason I might buy an XBox revolve around the games either coming out for it or already out for it. Doom 3 Half-Life 2 SW:Knights of the Old Republic Those are the 3 big ones. I'm tired of the constant upgrades to my PC. I figure it's cheaper to buy an XBox if I want to play Doom3 and HL2 when they come out than it is to upgrade my Duron-850/GeForce400MX so it can run those games. Do they still rent consoles at Blockbuster or Hollywood video? If they do, rent each one and see which one you like best. |
PS2 is the way to go. Ive played both and the xbox doesnt give me the fever to sell my PS2 and go out buy a new xbox. The graphics on the xbox are good but who cares. I cant tell a overwhelming difference between xbox graphics and PS2 graphics. I also like being able to play a dvd without having to buy a stupid remote. Some people bring up the multitap on PS2, I havent seen a whole lot of good games (on either console) that are 4 players. I will give the xbox credit for the hard drive instead of memory cards. But if its a kickass game like GTA Vice City i dont care to buy a memory card. The PS2 game selection is awsome thats all you can say.
ps: does anybody know anything about Driver 3. |
Gamecube may have a better good:bad game ratio, but that means theres like, what, 6 good games, 2 bad ones? Such a small library. It's a real shame, considering it's potential. I got mine for RE, and that was so worth it.
PS2 doesn't just have alot of games. Thats not the point. PS2 has alot of GOOD games. And most people here have named 2 good XBox games. KOTOR and Halo. Both coming out for PC. XBox doesn't have an interesting library. I'm ashamed to say I almost bought one earlier this summer. I just wanted Buffy and Halo. But when I looked at the games I saw at the store, I just thought "I don't want to play any of these titles." I'd have gotten sucked into KOTOR too, for sure, but I decided against it, and spent my money buying shiny pretty things for a special lady. And a question to you XBox owners, how many of you play Halo thru Gamespy? |
Do you know that despite the PS2 outnumbering the XBox, 4:1 the number 1 game on PS2 sold only twice as many copies as the number 1 game on XBox (Enter the Matrix)? The number 2 game for both PS2 and XBox sold the same number of copies on each console, and the #3 XBox game sold more than the #3 PS2 game!
What does this mean? The PS2 is getting old and the XBox is catching up. Developers prefer to work on the XBox. Nobody wants to use the horrible command line tools associated with the PS2, nor does any programmer want to write VU1 microcode to eek out the last bit of rendering performance from that machine. If you really want to get your game moving, you have to divide your code up and compile for different CPUs so you can use the VU0, VU1, EE and IOP all at the same time! It's a major pain in the ass. With XBox you get a nice debugger (even if the compiler is crap) and nice managment tools. Productivity for a development house targeting XBox triples over a place going for the PS2. </rant> Xbox is a good choice, and it will be a better choice when Crimson Skies comes out. |
the solution to this thread is....buy them all. honestly...i think bringing console games to pc takes the soul out of the game. games like halo were landmarks for the console world...but for pc...its just another game. also...gta is not that great...in my opinion.
|
After owning both. I'm still not sure. The only reason I play Xbox more is because of Marvel Vs. Capcom2 and Rallisport Challenge. PS2 still has the advantage RPG-wise. But I'll forever love the PC more. If it didn't have any PS2 or Xbox games, it'd still be the best gaming machine. As far as GTA, it's fun, but I'd rather watch my friends play. That's more for fun than me playing.
|

BTW my roommate has an XBox and i have a PS2, a GC, and a Dreamcast and the XBox gets like no play time unless we wanna play DOA3. Hell the Dreamcast gets much more play than the XBox. I will be getting Soul Calibur 2 for the GC because the side by side screen shots show that the GC and XBox versions have the same exact good graphics. |
Heh, The Xbox is a networked Game machine and a HES (Home Entertainment System) in one. You do have to MOD it though, and that voids the warranty, like MS were ever gonna honour that ;).
Once you get XBconnect and Halo, you will play no other FPS online game, yes I said ONLINE!!! XBConnect will let you "link" over the web! Xbox has more bang for the $, it costs the same now as a GeForce3 did when it came out. PS3 is so far away SONY are introducing a PS2.5 - WTF?? Its got all the networking capabilities of a PC without the hassle of upgrades. For 150$ you have a WAN capable games machine that ALL titles available will play on without the worry of hardware upgrades (my biggest gripe with PC's). PS: Just got Yager, and it rocks on the same league as Starlancer. If I only have two or three games that I play regularly online until Halo 2 comes out I will have saved $ over a PC. |
dreamcast was a great system that died early due to the ease of piracy for the system. i would say i play it the most out of every system because it has the fighting games worth playing...3rd strike, CvS2, and it has the best version of MvC2...the xbox one is trash because of the shitty fighting game controller and the ps2's version has a lower sound quality...and also...panzer dragoon orta is not an rpg, its a rail shooter
|
when the PS2 came out it didn't have shit for games, so the Xbox will get a wider selection eventualy.
I think Xbox is the better console. But the PS2 does have a wider and better selection of games at the moment. |
Quote:
Oh and to sadatx, the XBox has been out for a very long time and still has shit for games. But if i was gonna buy a console for sheer power, i would definitely get an XBox, no questioning that. But i dont want a super-powerful paper weight that will never get any play time, i want something that will let me play lots of fun video games. Thats the PS2. |
PS2.5? Thats a good one.. lol
PS2 network adaptor is stupid. USB ethernet card works just the same, and my ISP gave me that for free. |
to YaWhateva:
Yeah I agree the Xbox has been out for a while, but I remember thinking the same thing about the PS2 "Man is this ever gonna get decent games?" Then the flood hit. But, you're right, it has been a while.... |
I actually would really like for the XBox to get good games and have lots and lots of companies start making games for it, like Square/Enix, just because there is so much potential for the XBox to be great but right now i dont see it. It sickens me that i just said that I want the XBox to do good because I hate M$. Right now, I see the XBox as being a console you have for parties and not much else.
*edit for stupid spelling. |
I'd like to see the xbox get some RPG's. Clearly the hardware is superior, but it doesn't take masive horsepower to run an RPG. Ninja Gaiden, is the next game that will be welcome in my library.
I love the Xbox, because I have it networked to my computer. I'm running evoX and learning how they run the OS. It's interesting. Modding is fun... my xbox has a 120GB HD now, which allows me to store whole games on the HD for easy access. A few friends are also making models and skins for games. It's like the good old days when I was PC gaming in college. |
i highly doubt square enix bringing out any games for xbox period. the japanese market and many developers hate xbox. xbox hasnt been around that long either...about a year and a half...ps2's collection looked about the same around this time...now gc...that came out just shortly after xbox...look at that collection...nintendos got a lot to make up for the n64...and gameboy advance is doing just that...haha
|
I'm kind of surprised that more of the Square games haven't been released on the Gamecube.
|
I thought my Xbox was better untill it broke. At least I can still watch DVD's. There was a time after last Christmas where nothing good came out for the Xbox.
I still like the controller and the Xbox versions of the games better. |
A Final Fantasy game is scheduled to come out for the Gamecube, and i know that the Japanese market would never like having Square go to the XBox and for that reason it wont. I was just saying. I am very content right now with Square making games for the consoles i own, if they started making games for the XBox i would have to buy one.
|
I think Squaresoft alone makes PS2 worth the buy. Also i orginally bought a PS2 just to play tekken tag tournament, and now tekken 4.
|
A year ago i would have said PS2, but now i would have to say an X Box is the way to go. I have both, and i would much rather play X box games rather than ps2. But i do enjoy some ps2 games.... And also X box live is way better than ps2 online, and the upcoming games for x box looks awesome. But it really comes down to what games you prefer.
|
Even though I DO love the gamecube...
I don't think that one console is better than the other just as long as you take a look at what each one has to offer and you decide that it's the console that you choose. I have all 3. I play the Xbox most because of Marvel vs. Japcom 2 and Rallisport Challenge (with Initial D songs ripped to the hard drive). I love PS2 cause it has good driving games and the best RPGs. I love gamecube becaue of the games Nintendo makes. |
I own both of them but i play my xbox more, I really only use my ps2 for playing dvds. Which one is better? well one really isnt better than the other its really just a personal opinion.
|
PS2.5 = LINK!!
Methinks Xbox will already do this with a small tweak here and there :). Xbox is the gamers machine for people who dont want a PC. 1. WAN games are fucking awesome and on par with PC (not the same scope, granted). But most genre's are catered for - FPS, Role Play, Racing, and covered pretty well with graphics that are only a year out of date (Sorry PS2 graphics are shite now). Full speech transmission is cool (though I hate that "feature" that can change how you sound, I really don't like killing things that sound 8yrs old). 2. They have the best FPS game on the market to date (wait for Vectorman), in HALO. 3. The "real" racing games (xcept for F1 2003) are solid (MotoGP2 and Colin's Rally Game). 4. I do not need to reconfigure my hardware to have a LAN party! I have a few more but I just realised I'm defending Satan's (MR. BG) product, ack! |
PS: Tweekman, I have found some DVD's (specially imports or dodgy "bought off some geezer") skip on the PS2. I haven't tried the Xbox yet, but I heard it was sound as long as it wasn't a first gen model!
|
I have both and the xbox is a lot more DVD friendly.
But as far as driving games goes, Gran Turismo is still the best and I've played almost all of them... |
I just can't game well on consoles. Luv the PC for gaming. I usually play FPS and IMHO the mouse/keyboard is a natural. When new technology comes out you don't put the old PC in the closet and use the new, you upgrade something and still use the rest. On the other hand a new high end video card costs as much as a gaming console. Do'h
|
Just bought an X-box today.
If I didn't live in Taiwan, I would have bought a PS2, but since my Chinese reading skills are pretty much non-existant, the X-box became my choice. On the PS2 I'd be proud managing to get through the menu. With the X-box, I get sweet, sweet English. |
Microsoft just releases games for the XBox that Playstation already has, or similar games that suck. The XBox controller sucks ass as well.
|
^ Playstation doesnt have Halo, mechassult, panzer dragoon orta, knights of the old republic, or a version of splinter cell that compares. Dead or alive 3, gunvalk and midnight club 2 are all games that look amazing on xbox...
Also, who has seen the previews for Fable? This game looks absolutly amazing. http://www.xbox.com/fable/default.ht...talog=cat%2dus Just my .02, but i have a ps2, and i havent picked up the controller in months, the games just are not there for me anymore, xbox just has a lot better games, and seems like it will continue to be that way. Soul cal 2 comes out mighty soon, and xbox has spawn :) |
From http://maddox.xmission.com/xbox_suckit.html
Some reasons the Xbox blows. This is old but still pretty accurate imo. __________________________________________________ No Soul. You'll never see games like Metal Slug, Radiant Silvergun or Castlevania come out for the Xbox because Microsoft hasn't made the system attractive to the Japanese market. Capcom, Konami, SNK and a slew of other big game developers have turned their backs towards the Xbox except for a cursory presence with a half-hearted title port. There is light at the end of the tunnel, however. Sega is working on a Panzer Dragoon title as well as Toe Jam & Earl III. Regardless, the Xbox is still a PC at heart, right down to the hard drive and buggy software. Piss-poor design. The system is the brain child of Seamus Blackley, a 32-year-old red-haired jazz pianist and nuclear physicist. To quote him: "I was flying back from visiting [my girlfriend] and I had just got a new laptop and I was trying it out on the plane and I was thinking about graphics cards and I realized that we could make a machine that had much higher performance than anything else in the industry." Yeah, it's called PC dumbass. Real revolutionary idea. Take existing hardware, throw it together in a big clunky box and call it a console. Everything about the system reeks of poor design. Rather than getting a hand full of the most talented game developers in the world (here's a hint: YOU WON'T FIND THEM MAKING PC TITLES IN THE US ASSHOLE--GO TO JAPAN) and designing a system around the games from the ground up, Blackley comes along with an unlimited supply of stupid ideas about the gaming industry and designs a system that he himself admitted to being "little more than exposed cards with processors and graphics chips hooked to a monitor." No shit? I couldn't tell from how HUGE the case is. It's almost as if it was thrown together with pieces bought off of a store shelf--oh wait. What more, once he senses the impending fizzle of the launch, he bails from the company to work someplace else--where he'll inevitably spawn more stupid ideas. Shitty philosophy. Blackley thought he had the formula for a great system because all the components were there for a great system (and they are): a powerful graphics chip, a beefy hard drive, a fast processor and DVD capabilities. What he failed to realize was that just because you have all the raw material to make a great system doesn't mean it's going to be great. Saying the Xbox is a good system because it's powerful is like saying you made a great painting because you used the best set of paints. The Xbox is designed by people who think they know a joystick from their assholes. The problem is that they're mostly fat boring business men and not gamers. They're out to make a buck and it's painfully obvious in how poorly they're marketing the system (I think they've cornered the market on middle-aged men who buy one or two sports titles per year for their system). The games suck. It's been almost one full year since the launch of the Xbox and so far the only game that doesn't suck as much as everything else on the system is Halo. Everything else is either out on another console, mediocre or a boring PC port. Even Halo doesn't cut it as far as I'm concerned. The first person shooter (FPS) genre is best done on PC, period (just because some genres have been represented best on PC doesn't mean I'm biased towards PC, if anything I'm biased towards consoles so quit emailing me). As good as Halo is, it's not even the best in its genre (an honor reserved for Half Life as far as I'm concerned). The Xbox library of games is flooded with shit titles like "Azurik": games that seem more like projects for computer science majors in their senior year at college than professional products. I would rather be shot than have to play one more uninspired ho-hum platform title starring some stupid cat or some random guy that runs around bumping into other vague uninspired objects. Throw that shit away. A lot of people email me asking which console I prefer. The console I prefer is the console with the most games that I want to play, and right now Gameboy Advance and PS2 have the most games that I want to play. _______________________________________________ Overstated and sarcastic, yes, but still a lot of valid points. |
Ok I was looking at which console to buy just a couple months ago. True X-box has better graphics, and you can store music on the hard drive, and X-box live is good. GC was not considered mainly because Nintendo seems to have focused on younger gamers and I'm 34, I ended up purchasing a PS2 for the following reasons.
1. Game selection, let's face it PS2 has a tremendous amount of great games. 2. if I wanna play games online, I own a PC. 3. I play games to play them, not to sit there and oooooh and aaaah over the pretty graphics. 4. If I wanna listen to music, I own a stereo. If I was gonna buy a second console, I would have a hard time choosing between the X-box and the NGC. |
Maddox rules.

i got a PS2 and i got reasons for it according to my logic here are them.
1. dont have to pay to play online (except for the expantion) 2. HUGE library of good games some bad but there 3. more good games and more releases then Xbox or GC 4. able to mod it 5. excellent controler set up thats the reason i got mine :D |
game wise ps2 power wise xbox but to be honest i like the xbox more and i dont really know why its a pretty neat system its a shame it doesnt have many good exclusive games
|
ps2 owns.

PS2. Hugh library of $20 games help too (Greatest Hits)
Jak and Daxter, GTA III, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil LightGun Games! and I can play all of my PS1 games too. I would like KOTOR, and Mechassult, but I have a PC for that... |
Gonna represent for the X-Box here; PlayStation 2, to me, is my least favorite out of all the next-gen systems. To top it off, I rank the Nintendo 64 over it too, and equal to or less than the Sega Dreamcast. I'm probably gonna be blamed for being anti-Sony or something along those lines, but I don't hate the PlayStation 2 or nothing like that. It has some good games...just not any games good enough for me to buy the system for, or a series that will make it worth my wait when a sequel comes out. On the plus-side though, there's lots of games I've rented for the PS2 that I've enjoyed. I would rather get the Halo series and the Rare products that will soon come than many of the games for the PS2, however.

Personally i think the problem with the XBOX is that it has a very small game library and many of them (most of the good ones) are also released on PC. Why buy a crapped down version for the XBOX when you can get it for PC?

See my post on fanboys..

PS2 = better games, free online, don't have to pay for DVD access

I have a PC, so I really see no point to getting an Xbox.
Splinter Cell - on PC Knights of the Old Republic - Coming to PC Halo - Coming to PC These games are probably the top three best games out on Xbox so far, and they're not even exclusives. |
PS* will be king for a long while. Christ, they still make games for the PS1 and that thing is like 7 years old.
As for hardware, yes, the xbox is on top. But look who is making the thing. All it is is a mini computer. Though hardware is its best point, Microsoft doesn't know shit about games. All they can do is buy delevopment companies that are making good games. They wouldn't have their system seller Halo if they didn't buy Bungie. All the money in the world and best hardware doesn't produce good games. There is a reason Rockstar puts Grand Theft Auto on PS2 before any other system. And another thing, all this "Halo is the best game ever! 4 player multiplayer is teh best!" What shit. If you enjoy playing FPS muliplayer games, get a computer people. A mouse, keyboard and 19" monitor beats that hunky controller and 4 split screen windows ANY day :) |
^ thats why you use a switch and some cat5 cable, and use SYSTEM LINK and play on different tv's. PS2 has like 2 games that use system link, XBOX has a lot lot more, just off the top of my head HALO, mechassult, ghost recon, return to wolf, unreal, all the tony hawks, clone wars, brute force, midnight club 2, midtown madness 3, nfl fever, time splitters 2, SOF2, and i know there are more....Seriously, xbox is quite functional in its multiplayer abilites.
Im suprised noone has mentioned the 4 controler to 2 controller thing. Fuck buying a multi-tap. Also, i don't know about you guys, but when i get 7 friends together, we can play for upwards of 6 hours of halo, straight, and i dont see you playing any ps2 game w/ friends for 6 hours straight. Also, the Controller S is a pretty good controller, i think for halo, its better than the ps2 controller would be. I have a PS2, but honestly, i havent touched it for over 6 months, and the next game im looking forward to, is MGS3, and GT4, other than that, they aint got shit. RPG wise, xbox is really moving up, fable, is going to be a godly game. Jedi academy, the sonic game, COUNTERSTRIKE (:)) and Halo 2, soul calibur 2, ninja gaiden, Starcraft ghost, rainbow 6 (3), and freedom fighters, are all games that are going to rule. Overall, in the long run, long long run, i see sony/M$ outlasting the big N, but i dont think M$ is getting out anytime soon, and the quality games are coming, and a lot are already here. :) |
I own both and have to say I like X-box better. It gets more play time along with my gamecube. Hardware wise X-box kills the PS2. The PS2 can do some amazing effects but it's usually at the cost of gameplay. As for game libraries all three consoles have a lot of shovelware, PS2 having the most. I can't believe how many crappy games there are out for the system.

Old thread, but have to add:
Fuck split screen.... Go XBconnect (can't be bothered to link it, search) and you can do full screen Halo multiplayer over your Bb connex. Any game you can link you can play over the web! Oh yeah and its free! (Though don't yet know if the software has some other purpose). PS2 is ok for some titles but as a game machine it lacks: Graphics - Not GF3 comparable Sound - Sorry, but I have yet to hear DTS quality Price - For an old (in console terms) system its still expensive. DVD - Still skips WAN - Not yet, titles don't really cut it! Wins: Games - But losing ground rapidly |
the solution
i bought my gf a ps2 , she got me a xbox :)
but if i would have to choose again i would take a xbox splinter cell looks better on the xbox halo is simply stunning ( cooperative mode) and i am waiting on halo 2 / Star Wars : Knights of the Republik :) |
I wanted a ps2 for ages before it came out, but now its all xbox, the games are better on xbox and the graphics are stunning
I feel like a fool wanting ps2 so bad, |
I have owned a ps2 for a long time, and just recently bought an xbox. I have to say I was an xbox hater for along time, but I can't put down Knights of the old republic, Halo and Mechassault.
I even really liked the clunky controller, that I figured i would hate. |
I jus bought both.
|
I havent used the PS2 much...but im more of an X-box fan...for Halo :)
|
I've played all 3 systems, my roomate own's a PS2. I own both the Xbox and the GCN. Gamecube for the excellent first party titles.
Xbox for: Games (more my type, and getting better all the time) Harddrive Xbox Live! Graphics Sound PS2 has some great games sure, but I only consider a handful them to be truly steller. I think the PS2 has reached it's pinnicle, the hardware is definatly beginning to show its age. A major reason the PS2 has such a large library is the large lead time it had on the market. Xbox is just now starting to hit it's stride, many of the games that are slated to be released in the next year are shaping up to be really great. So IMO PS2 has had it's time on top, but its running out of steam Xbox is only going to get better over the next couple of years |
Right now, there's only one thing that the PS2 still has that the Xbox hasn't caught up to, or exceeded.
PS2 Exclusives. And it's a very short list now. This is just games like the GTA's, Gran Turismo, and other Sony developed games. But for every GTA and such, there's an equally good game on the Xbox. Sony needs to get that PS3 out soon or they're going to be screwed big time. |
I can relate to some of the views here, but when people say that XBox is better simply because it has Halo and better graphics it gets a bit annoying. That's like saying PS2 is better because it as Final Fantasy and it's not as heavy. Console arguments are pointless. All three consoles out right now are great consoles. If you don't like one of them, it's because you played a handful of shitty games for it. Read the reviews before you buy a game and you'll enjoy every game you play on each system.
I own all three systems and enjoy all three systems. I play the PS2 more than the other two simply because I have more games for it. That doesn't make the other two consoles "suck." It simply states that I've played my PS2 more. And in conclusion, a system doesn't "suck" simply because you don't have it, or didn't buy it and got another one instead. Accept the fact that there has been dozens of incredible games on each system, and just because you didn't play them doesn't make it all "suck." Like I said before, if you play a bunch of shitty games on a system, then you'll think the system sucks. In other words, read the damn reviews. I only play games that get an 8.5 or higher from Electronic Gaming Monthly and that has led me to enjoy every console I've ever owned. -Lasereth |

But sorry, you just talked over all the fanboy's heads... I think this is like asking, "Who gives better head, blondes or brunettes?" Well, everyone has their experiences and preferences, and it's up to that person to ultimately "play" each type -- err, brand. Anyway, I agree with you. I think it's pointless to focus on one system anymore...They all have worthwhile titles. Period. End of discussion. |

But ya, each console has its ups and downs, it doesnt matter. |

The one everyone likes but is afraid to admit to... |

I have both PS2 and XBox, I have played them both equally and at first I liked the PS2 a lot better. Now I am leaning towards the XBox.
