What's the Best RPG out there at the moment?
Hi,
I finished the Baldur's Gate series a while back and thought they were the best role playing games I'd seen for a longwhile. Does anyone have any suggestions at to what is the best RPG around at the moment (for a PC)? Something not too dissimilar to BG Throne of Bhaal, Shadows of Amn, Tales of the Sword Coast etc would be great. Thanks for your help and suggestions.:) |
You could try Pirates of the Carribean
|
The neverwinter nights series is similar, based on 3rd ed d&d rules.
|
star wars galaxies is not a true rpg at heart, but it is the best "mmorpg" out there at the moment
|
If you want a game like Baldur's Gate 1&2, I'd recommend Neverwinter Nights. It is a good game with a similar feel and based in the same universe I think (because NPCs mention places in Baldur's Gate). If you want just an RPG in general, try Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. It, and it's expansion packs are pretty good stuff. It is a fairly open RPG with a massive world to explore and a storyline to follow. I say open because you can take your time with your main storyline and do side quests or just explore and acquire whatever you can find. I spent a LONG time playing this, it is definately a good length RPG. The saves are not restrictive and I like that because that way I don't have to find a save point before I can stop playing. Just remember to save often, I keep forgetting and when I die I go back so far.

If you haven't played it, Planescape: Torment rocks the Casbah. It's largely similar to BG (same dev team, I'm pretty sure), but the story is sooooo good. Not that BG was bad, but...
I liked Icewind Dale too, although there was practically no story to that series. Just smashy smashy. Which has a certain draw to it, sometimes. |
Agreed with Planescape: Torment.
That game has THE BEST story ever. I've played through Baldurs Gate, Baldurs Gate 2, Icewind Dale 1 & 2, Neverwinter Nights, Fallout 1&2 and all those Bioware RPGs and Planescape: Torment is probably my favorite (with BG2 close behind. |
I'd say SWG or AO
SWG has great graphics but is new and is real bugged that it rivals AO's release :/ Now AO is a great game but it gets kinda boring after a few months. I got to 200 then PvPed a little joined thea great guild after that I quit..nothing really better to do |
I've been wanting to try Morrowind for a while. I just haven't wanted to upgrade my machine enough to play it.
I've heard lots of good things about it. |
neverwinter nights is a great game. i'm in the process of playing it at the moment. i've had some stability problems with it though. seems to crash after a couple hours of gameplay. just save often if you have the same problem.
|
Icewind Dale 2 would get my vote if your looking for games similar to BG, though as doctorphibes mentioned it is combat heavy.
|
Knights of the old republic is awesome!!!!
|
Chrono Trigger for the snes, it's still the best rpg. classic

Just to add my two cents. Neverwinter Nights is a great option, as mentioned above. The expansion pack adds even more fun :D Icewind Dale 2 is also a great option.
For Planescape: Torment, I have run into people who don't like the massive amount of reading. Myself, I loved the game and its story and development. However, just a warning that if you don't like reading a lot in RPGs, it may not be right for you. I highly recommend it though. |
i gotta say morrowind and its 2 expansions are awesome. after a lot of MMORPGs lately its a great change of pace since this game has even more freedom to do what you want, but it also has great graphics and an excellent storyline.
if you are looking for an RPG with a ton of freedom, i highly recommend it. |
KOTOR!! KOTOR!! KOTOR!!!
Knights of the Old Republic not only lets you choose where and when you want to do things, it lets your actions decide whether you go to the light or dark side of the force. Amazing fun - even for non-RPG folk. |
You can't play kotor on the PC goobers, not yet at least.

No game can beat Baldur's Gate II. Nothing
I dont get why do people like NWN its basically a 3D version of Diablo with D&D rules instead. The campaign is as boring as a RPG could get. You start out watching the relationship of a lady paladin and her elven boyfriend and end up saving the world from a race that you just discovered 30 min ago (you could have heard of them earlier from a boring side quest) most missions are get this peace of rock by hacking through dougens of ugly monsters. the graphics are horrouble, seening repetive tiles of terren just dont appeal to me. Multiplayer could be fun, i never tried it personally Morrowind is not that good. the graphic is good and the architecture is good but the story is too so so. too many fedex quests and crappy ending. the games too slow too huge. not a game for casual gamers that dont want to spend their life in the game. btw, i am surprised that no one is dump enough to mention Diablo. To all those who will mention it: Diablo is a action game with a little character development and liner story. |
Thanks to all for the info. Great help.
I'll give Planescape: Torment a go first I think. |
Dark age of Camlot would by my favorite ..
|
Legend of Dragoon for the ps1 :p
MB |
To offer another suggestion - Wizardry 8
|
I recomend Morawind its more like everquest than BG, but its alot of fun.

I'm feeling a little past agression :p I love Diablo.... :D Can you recomend another game like it? |
Fallout 2
It's an oldie, but a gooodie. Arcanum and a bit on the border line, but Deus Ex |
I have Fallout 2, love it. I don't have it on my computer at the present moment, but should reinstall it one of these days. My problem was that I kept on running out of Ammo, and couldn't get more. :(
Perhaps I should specialize in hand to hand :D |
xenosaga?

KOTOR is currently only available on the XBOX. For PC, though, you can't go wrong with Neverwinter Nights. Not only does it have the included campaign, the expansion just came out a few weeks ago, and it includes a toolkit to make custom content, of which there is literally a cubic buttload of quality stuff available via links from Bioware's website.

Legend of Dragoon was awesome!!! It was like the Final Fantasy games, but much much better.
If you like Hack&Slash like Diablo, then you should try Dungeon Siege. |
I'll have to add my vote against NWN. The single player campaing is horrible boring, the gameplay is a mix of diable and DND that doesn't capture the magic of either.
You can only control one character, and the NPC's that help you are so braindead you will kill them just to be able to progress. DND is a team systen, so playing through with one character is not fun at all. Trying to play through a story-heavy campaing in multiplayer is frustrating as important conversations aren't shown to all players. A lot of problems with the game could be solved by allowing you to control a part of characters as an option. I know this makes it less in character, but those of us going back to the gold box games are used to controlling a party through a story. It's fun to build a party where the members compliment each other. This feature would generate a lot more interest in the mod community as well. Some games I would recommend (not all great, but I enjoyed them): Planescape Toment Fallout 1 & 2 Arcanum Divine Divinity Gothic Wizardry 8 Morrowind Deus Ex |
NWN, while being a nice game, dissapointed me in the simplicity of the campaign. Sadly, it does play a lot like Diablo. If you do get NWN, go for some downloadable campaigns, or consider playing online.
Also, be weary of Morrowind. While it's a good game, it is so open ended it sometimes has trouble advancing the plot. The other games mentioned, especially Planescape, Fallout, and icewind dale are good alternatives. Also, consider hitting an emulator for the classic rpg's on the snes, FF6/3 and Chrono Trigger are musts. |
Although I wouldn't consider Diablo II LOD to be a real RPG, I'd still consider it among my favorites. I like it so much that I still play the game to this date. Lots of variety in character builds, and I've yet to make a smiter pally (my next project).

I'm with Planescape Torment all the way.
Currently, Dark Age of Camelot is very popular. It's a MMORPG though and you gotta pay to play. But a dam good game. |
