Woo hoo! DOOM 3 to have multiplayer after all!
Just announced this morning! This year's QuakeCon will give gamers the first opportunity to play Doom 3 multiplayer!
It's only four-player deathmatch, but that's something, at least. Details below. ========================= DOOM 3(TM) Deathmatch Playable at QuakeCon 2003 Thursday July 24, 8:14 am ET SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Prepare for DOOM 3(TM)! id Software(TM) and Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI - News) are bringing DOOM 3 to QuakeCon 2003. The world's most legendary multiplayer gaming event will host the first-ever opportunity for fans to play DOOM 3 multiplayer. In Dallas at the Adam's Mark Hotel from Aug. 14 - 17, QuakeCon attendees will go toe-to-toe at the Activision/id Software booth in the ultimate sneak preview of the most anticipated game ever. "What better way to celebrate QuakeCon than to unveil to our fans a preview of DOOM 3 multiplayer," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "While everyone knows that DOOM 3 is the most terrifying and scary single player experience ever created, multiplayer delivers the intense competitive action that our fans can count on. It's a natural to debut the DOOM 3 multiplayer experience at QuakeCon, the world's preeminent fan-based multiplayer gaming event." QuakeCon attendees will have the chance to play DOOM 3's four-player Deathmatch on a level co-developed by id Software and U.K.-based developer Splash Damage, Ltd. Splash Damage has most recently worked with id Software on Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, and will be co-developing DOOM 3's multiplayer levels. |

well id was always sketchy on the multiplayer aspect of doom3. at first they said it wouldnt be included initially, but later in a patch or something. then they said it would only be limited to 4 player deathmatch, so this isnt much of any NEW news. id love to do some 4 player co-op single player. i think that would really fun, but im not looking at doom3 for any amazing mp experience, ill wait on quake 4 for that

Seeing as Q3 was multiplayer only, what is the issue is with Doom3. Only 4 players? WTF is up with that. Today, if a pc game doesn't have multiplayer it gets shit on. I don't see how only 4 player servers will satisfy the multiplayer need.
Any insight on why its only 4 players? I'm thinking its because more players would kill the fps since its so graphics intense.

Shoot, I don't even think about D3 or HL2. I'll believe in them when they are released. I'm tired of delays. Don't even get me started on Duke Nukem Forever. lol. And wasn't Halo supposed to be a PC title even before the X Box was released?

Well, I played it at QuakeCon - twice. And loved it! Graphics were incredible. Action was good paced. And having some areas darkened, forcing you to use a flashlight was a nice touch. I also particularly enjoyed the berserker powerup - you jump down a shaft, then hear this banshee yell as the edge of the screen goes blurry and you move at a lightning pace, killing opponents with your fists.
Gimme Gimme Gimme!!

Back to topic. I thought that maybe 4 player was gonna be for co-op only but I guess maybe the D3 engine won't support more?

i guess
the experience with doom 3 multiplayer will be total diffrent to all the other fps games out there. it will be unique , refreshing new and fun. we have enough games with 100 players online (planetside) would be great to have a fps that owns with only 4 people playing
p.s Halflife 2 looooks also very promising but will be more like all the other fps i guess

I wasn't very impressed with the speed of Doom 3 at the con. I loved the look, but ID's fan base has a lot of Quake 3 and UTourney people, which are pretty fast paced games, and Doom 3 is not fast enough to make them happy. Oh, and it took a hundred years to kill somebody.
I felt like I was running around with a refrigerator on my back shooting people with a staple gun, honestly.
