Magic : The Gathering

So who plays, wants to play, or used to play.

I'm an avid player, and am a bit better than the average. Not that great though. I play every friday at my local store.

Been using "Apprentice" and "Magic Workstation" to play a friend of mine online. It's cheaper and easier than buying cards anymore, and it makes the game about deck-building and strategy rather than who has the deepest pockets.

I'll answer, because I had to go check them out.

They are both free, I think. But it seems like Apprentice hasn't been updated in a few years. I could be wrong though. So I don't know if anyone updated all the cards and sets.

I don't play (in real life) anymore, because I'm really cheap and got bored with it. I stopped as soon as Weatherlight came out.

Ugh, that game ripped off more than half of it's cards from Magic!!! My friiends play Yu-Gi-Oh, but recently I brought a box of Magic Pre-cons (Pre-constructed decks) over to thier places and tought them how to play. I can safely say I converted them.

I have a milk crate packed full of cards(in albums of course) sitting in the closet. I taught the wife to play about a year ago, but that only lasted a few weeks. I always sink too much time into organizing the cards and building new decks. I love the game, I just spend way too much time on it when I am playing.

Same here. I still have all of the cards in a large box and a binder just sitting around.

Sorry, was away for the weekend. They are indeed both free. There are card libraries that people update, allowing you to have both pictures and card functionalities; the last update I grabbed was Scourge. The programs are frameworks and little else; I like Workstation for its deck building and overall look and feel. It's still somewhat manual, but if you're playing against friends you shouldn't have to worry about cheating. I'm loathe to post links because it could technically be viewed as stealing from WotC (although the jury is still out on that, so to speak) and I don't want to get TFP in trouble. If you're really interested PM me.

I used to play a lot with a good friend of mine... my cards are in a drawer in my basement... My son pulled them out the other day.

He was in shock that I was so cool. Apparently they are all the rage at his school.

I didn't have the heart to tell him that the cards actually made me a geek.

I played way back in the day, I started around when Legends came out. For someone without the money to buy Mox gems and a Black Lotus, I did pretty well for myself. Towards the end of my MTG career I got pretty bored and started making decks built around useless cards. My Kudzu deck was feared by anyone who used land. Eventually most of my collection got stolen, so I gave away/sold the rest of it.

I play fairly regularly IRL and MTGO. Too much money being spent so I've seriously cut back (as in stopped) buying new stuff. I am participating in the 8th edition release this weekend, only because I want the Royal Assasin avatar you get online for going to the real life 8th edition events. Very sneaky those guys at WotC making me interact with people away from the safety of my keyboard. It would have to be a really cool avatar, too.

I used to play, stopped playing sometime after Mercadian Masques. Got tired of playing it any I always played it at a camp because my friends only played it for a year or so. After I no longer went to the camp, I didn't feel like playing anymore and quit.

What's everyone's favorite cards, the ones you couldn't build a killer deck without having? I was a big fan of 'Balance' a White sorcery that made you and your opponent even out the # of lands and creatures you had on the table. I don't know if this card is still in circulation, if it's restriced or banned or not, but I put at least 2 in any minimal-land or low-creature deck I built. It was so easy to cripple most players for a casting cost of 1W.

I don't consider myself an expert just love playing.

Anybody in Sydney, Australia looking for a few beers and a game of Magic, or Vampire, or another CCG I'd be willing to learn get in touch with me!

Mostly play online now, seem to fulfill my desires.

I actually considered surrendering my spot at the 8th edition pre-release this weekend. I am so glad I didn't. I opened my 4th pack (out of 5) and nearly swallowed my tongue as a beautiful FOIL Birds of Paradise slid out from the back of the pack.

i used to play with several friends, but stopped buying any cards once Tempest came out (i thought they were going a bit overkill on a few of the cards... part of Weatherlight was the same way)..

I never really got into playing online, because I found most of my friends whom I played online would almost always had 4 mox's in their decks and a few black lotuses.. I personally liked having to collect them and if you had a rare card it made it that much cooler.. Most of my friends didn't drop too much cash on decks, so I had never seen a mox or a black lotus played in any games I was in.

since there also werent any gamestores around me who held magic tournaments (until after I decided to quit buying cards... bah Tempest) I never did anything other than friendly matches.

Now, sevferal years down the line, a friend of mine's little brother started to play so I basically gave him everything I had that wasn't currently in a deck so my collection was easily cut down to a 1/5 of its original size, but I rarely ever miss them (only miss them when trying to help a new player play)..

I am planning on starting to play agani with some of my older decks against some people in town here (different town, different folks, different playing strategies maybe?) and see how my decks hold up since most of them are only revised with a few cards splattering up to Weatherlight (although few weatherlight cards)..

as far as my favorite card to build a deck around.. hmm tough call... I would say functionally I like the Vesuvan doppelganger, but since I absolutely love the picture on Clone I will go with Clone

(disclaimer: please forgive any grammatical errors in above text... tis late, and I did notice a few, but I am too tired to reread the entirety of this text)

I play everynow and and again, collected since Arabian Nights all the way up to Mercadian Masks, I think that was the last one I bought. I still have around 90% of my original cards stored up somewhere. Every now and again I'll meander to the local trade shop and chat with the owner who's been playing as long as I have. I'll sit down with a few kids that play their new decks slapem around silly with a few of my older type 1 decks and leave.

But it is going the same way as Magic. To much to keep up with (even wholesale). I sell enough on e-bay and my website to support my gaming habit.

I've been playing consistently for about a year, I practically never have money for this game, so I'm kinda shocked at how far I've come from spending only $40 bucks on about a premade deck back in the final set of Odyssey Block and now into Kamigawa (so far my favorite block next to Invasion)
I don't play online cuz I'm only 17 and I think its pointless to buy fake cards (unless they gave me real copies in return)
I've tried the free ones but since there are no server like abilities, I never found it to be fun or interesting.
I guess I could say I'm "okay" at the game since I've been playing on and off for quite a while.
The main reason I play so little actually is because of my father who has attempted to ban me from this game since he thinks its a evil form of gambling or something, I don't get to play much since I have been banned by my father from the major store that hosts MTG games.
Oddly even though he tries to ban me from the game, I still seem to keep playing it, now all I have to do is be 18 to be even more of a player
