i have quite a few cards and play very rarely, i would play a lot more but there are some things that i would rather do...its entertaining though.

syquestrd270 02-09-2005 10:01 PM

I play with a group of 9-10 people every other week or so. I started in 93-94 back when it was getting started then didn't play for a few years. I'm liking the Kamigawa set.

Spritebox 02-09-2005 10:59 PM

Oh, god. I played this all through middle school. Quit after 8th grade, and then rediscovered it with some friends during my senior year.

I play casually.

FngKestrel 02-09-2005 11:35 PM

Played from 3rd edition through Ice Ages. Worked at a card and comic book store in our area and basically signed over half my paycheck every payday. Looking at some of the guys at my work playing the new stuff, I long for the simplicity of trample, first strike, and flying.

Loved making decks. Everyone goes through the same phases of deck making though. "Let's make a flying deck. Now a weenie deck. How about a land destruction deck. Or a control deck, etc, etc."

My favorite deck was an unorthodox three-color deck made up of walls. Playing Wall of Caltrops always got a look from my opponents. :D

Tusko 02-12-2005 11:01 AM

walls were the only way to play.

i always used a fairly fierce combo of walls, lots of tramples (i tried to use nothing but trample) and flying creatures. I had a few flying/tramples as well that were just deadly.

FngKestrel 02-12-2005 11:31 AM

Hated Juggernaut. Unblockable by walls. Friends would always put one or two of those in a deck to mess with me.

God bless Disenchant. And I had COP:Artifacts just in case. :D

NeverBorn 02-12-2005 01:40 PM

I used to WAY BACK in the day..

heccubusiv 02-12-2005 02:28 PM

I used to be a great player then they started adding a lot new cards and a lot of different stuff and i lost interest. Every once in a while i bring out my green power deck to play my friends

Camelbackcinema 02-12-2005 02:37 PM

I played for about 3 years in high school. Spent tons of money on those frickin cards, and couldn't get a good booster pack or starter deck to save my life.

Still have all my cards in a box under my bed, actually pulled them out and looked at them 2 or so weeks ago.

Is there any market for them? Ebay and such?

Spritebox 02-12-2005 03:58 PM

Pickup a copy of Inquest magazine to research the card's value, then go down the the comic shop or bookstore (or whatever groups of people gather to play magic) and sell them off.

As for the commons, ebay them =P

FngKestrel 02-12-2005 04:05 PM

You'll probably get half-price if you try to sell to a store, maybe 3/4 price if you want store credit. At least, that's the rate we used to price at at the store I was at. I'd probably e-bay all of it.

keeb 02-12-2005 09:56 PM

mine are sitting around as well along my friends who gave his to me when he left for basic training.

tspikes51 02-14-2005 06:27 PM

I haven't played in about a year, but I used to play a lot. It's easy to get burned out if you play with people that spend over $100 a month in cards, even though I was really good at sealed deck. I can't see how they justify it. Apprentice is great, though.

gduventree 02-15-2005 12:06 PM

I used to be big into buying cards and making decks, but now I just find it too much of a chore.

I still love to play, though, and that's why I've taken up drafting. I get the joy of cracking open packs, picking cards, building my deck, and competing against other players on an even footing, all in less than three hours of my time.

NoSoup 02-15-2005 12:41 PM

I used to play quite a bit - I just recently sold my cards a couple of years ago.

Around here, I had quite a few decks that were feared by many (wow.... what a geek I was)

But, then again - I did have the best cards available. 4 Black lotus', 3 sets of Mox's, ect.

My favorite decks to play? I had a Ball lightning deck that went undefeated for all the years that I had it, a goblin deck that did extraordinarily well, a land destruction deck that made it nearly impossible for my opponent to keep any land on the table, a counterspell deck that was just fun, and a black powerhouse deck that was slow to start, but once everything got rolling, was unstoppable.

I loved the older sets, the newer ones are just cheesy knockoffs of the old cards. I think I stopped playing around Visions...

scott_p_1 02-15-2005 01:26 PM

I used to play back in Jr. High and the beginning of High school. That was from about Ice Age to like weatherlight, tempest or whatever. I picked it up again in university right when Torment came out, and started started selling cards as a summer job. It was fun for a while, I had the card pool to play a little more competitively, and it made me money instead of costing me (since I was selling). I ended up quitting again right before the artifact block came around.
My T1.5 sligh was pretty deadly. My favorite deck to play was my future sight deck. Very competitive, but my friends didn't enjoy playing against me with my half hour turns...

itch vaccine 02-16-2005 08:04 AM

Sorry didn't read previous posts :

MTG is a waste of money

why? they keep banning old editions in tourneys, allowing only new ones, requiring you to renew your decks every now and then.

and I had a few fkin good cards go down the washing machine, I got so pissed I stopped because I was losing so much money to the game at the same time.

:(

AngelicVampire 02-16-2005 10:20 AM

What stuff you got Camelbackcinema?

Itch, MTG updates T2 to keep the environment fresh (last 2 sets), block is the most recent... however extended is like the last 10 sets (back to tempest right now), Legacy allows for all the sets and vintage allows you to even play every card ever printed bar 6 (the ante cards + dexterity cards).

The environment changes however you can play casual with any cards, and there are tournaments for any card set... and you can play sealed or draft for some fun without needing any cards.

Scipio 02-16-2005 12:37 PM

Tragic: The Garnering

/sorta obscure reference

oblar 02-21-2005 08:59 PM

AngelicVampire, I know the ante cards, but what are the dexterity cards? Also, you cannot use Unglued and Unhinged I believe.

i actually planned to play in a tournament and had made a T2 deck, but then I stopped playing for a bit and I came back and the entire deck had been banned from T2 play due to WotC releasing several new sets. My decks now pretty much have nothing after Weatherlight, and my power decks generally don't go past Visions and are mostly Revised.

Bobaphat 02-22-2005 12:33 AM

used to play, mostly collect the cards. Its been many years though. wonder if they are worthy anything today

FngKestrel 02-22-2005 12:36 AM

How far back do your cards go? From what I understand, many of the cards these days are severely nerfed for gameplay reasons, making the earlier editions ridiculously powerful.

Many years ago, there was a decision to try to slow the game down. That said, most older cards fall much more into the category of 'unplayable chaff' by todays standards, and it's really just a relative handful of 'classics' that make Vintage/Legacy broken.

The power level also tends to oscillate over the course of several blocks. The 2003-4 block (Mirrodin) turned out to push the envelope in terms of aggresion, and the game is still recovering (In fact, more bannings are coming out in a few days to try and stem the tide of pain brought about from this).

P-Naughty 02-22-2005 08:22 AM

I used to play when it first got big in my area, but after about 3 months no one played it anymore. You see the fundies had a ball claiming it was promoting Satanism. I bought the starter set for Portal and that was it.

{begin nerdiness}
Then I go to college, where we have a comic and game store not too far from campus, and saw all these people playing it in the dorms. I got back into it, sadly, last year. I actually bought a box of Betrayers of Kamigawa at the release a few weeks ago and went to the Champions of Kamigawa pre-release in Atlanta.

I run three decks, all mono. I have my green fatty-to-your-grill/gain life/mana accel deck; a black Hate-O-Rade control deck with Mortivores (power and toughness equal to the number of creatures in all graveyards, regen for 1 black) plus an Avatar of Woe, Underworld Dreams, and stuff that people don't like; and a blue Unspeakable deck that actually works.

As for Yu-Gi-Oh, I hate it. Not as much skill involved in my opinion. And I don't wanna play any game where I need a calculator to figure out how much damage I'm dealing. Then again, I have played a Saproling deck in the past. 500 20/20s flying someone's way is quite fun.

{end nerdiness}

EDIT: If anyone is looking to sell any of their collections or a few cards, holla

Onions 02-22-2005 02:36 PM

This was a really fantastic game, I started about 3rd edition and quit around ice age.

At the time I quit I had a deck I was pretty sure was unbeatable that was completely defensive and was designed to run the other person out of cards. At the time, this was unheard of, do people do this now?

oblar 02-22-2005 10:16 PM

FngKestrel: I find it to be the other way around. Most of the newer cards are severely over powered. They make the older cards seem to be a waste of mana. It is just a new way of playing which makes playing older cards only against newer cards you are put at a disadvantage.

P-Naughty: How the heck did you get 20/20 flying saproling tokens? Was it a one turn only or were they permanently that big? I have a Thallid deck and I just get them to be 2/2s with Kaysa; granted, they are pretty powerful when you have 100 2/2s and camouflage is always fun.

Onions: When I played a while back (pre-tempest) that was a common deck strategy and it was just called a Mill-stone deck or a Mill-deck. Both named after Mill-stone which was a typical card to throw in there.

It's possible, seeing as how I don't know many of the current cards. However, the cards I have seen seem like weaker versions of older cards, requiring that the user tap initially, or use every other turn, or sacrifice life. I'll find some specific examples later.

oblar 02-23-2005 10:18 PM

FngKestrel, I know what you are talking about. If the card is a reprint (which I am still irritated about, since WotC originally said they wouldn't make reprints) then it has become weaker.

Like Diabolical Tutor. 2BB and it does the exact same thing as Demonic Tutor which only costs 1B.. Same thing with Elven Cache and Regrowth. When you find the reprints they make them weaker. However, cards like worship. As long as it is in play you can't be dropped below one life. I wonder how that works with Lich ;) Arrest is another newer nasty card. Completely eliminates a creature without killing it. No more tap affects, can't attack or block.
