Nethack!!

Does anyone here play nethack? If you do how far have you managed to get? Any great nethack stories?

For those who don't know Nethack is a free game (by default its text based, but most new players don't like that so there is a graphical version at http://falconseye.sourceforge.net ) The game is basically a randomly generated, turn based, D&D dungeon crawl (based on a strange amalgamation of 1st edition and 2nd edition rules) What makes the game great is its amazing level of completeness, it really seems to have thought of everything (you want to put on those boots of levitation and use your pickax to dig thru the roof? no problem!) It is also a very very difficult game to beat making it perfect for people who like to bang their heads against walls.

I d/l'd Falcon's Eye a few months ago. Very hard. I used to play rogue, but never made it very far. Still not made it too far in FE, either.

I can't believe I just heard "nethack". It has been years since I heard that. Before I knew anything about computers, and my dad was a programmer at AT&T, he showed my bro and I the game and we were instantly addicted. We played it for years as they kept coming up with different versions.

i've gotten past medusa, but i had to go back for an artifact that on the quest mission (damned invisible teleport doors). and it crashed every time i went back through the door with the artifact. so i got pissed and hacked it up. (it wasnt cheating it was glitch fixing)i'll begin playing inbetween classes again once school gets settled.

The archaeologist was by far the coolest survivalist role in the game.

i play it every once in a while. It is one of my staple games, although I rarely get very far. On average I get to dlvl 10 or so.

i get very few magical items generally.. The best I have done so far is a Valk who died on the Quest boss (darn teleportitis... ate a tengu and got teleportitis rather than TC so the quest was a bit hard)

ive made it to medusas layer once as well.

I have Rogue on my Palm handheld. Good for waiting in line, and it looks like you are working.

question...

I play Nethack for about three months now, and I have a few questions:
1: I usually play in expierience mode. My character is an elven Ranger. I have heard that there are some characters that are better than others. Do I stand any chances to get finished with that one?
2: I tend to eat anything I killed. Once I ate a Mountain nymph, and was told that I felt jumpy. From that time onward I was teleported around the whole map. Is there any remedy? If not, how do I know if I can eat a creature I killed? Are there things I should never eat, not even in expierience mode?
3: Why on earth do I aggravate monsters? Somewhere in the first two levels I killed my little dog by accident. The a nymph stole my food, and I panicked and ate the dog. I was told that I felt that this wasn't a good idea. Is that the reason?
4: I started playing on my first computer, which is now dead. I installed Nethack again, on an entirely new PC; on the old one, I played an Archeologist first. I named my dog Sirius there. Then I played my elven Ranger, and the dog's name was automatically Sirius. So far so good. But now, on the new computer, my dog's name is Sirius as well. So I assume that the game is edited that way. Or my computers lead a life of there own.
5: I have been killed on Dlvl 13 by a Barrow Wight (I love the definitions!). Is there any way to prevent it from reducing my points to 1??
6: How do I destroy a troll so that it does not come back after 5 seconds?
Thanks!

Words of Wisdom ...

It is curious how often you humans manage to obtain that which you do not want.

After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing, after all, as wanting. It is not
logical, but it is often true.

Logic is a little tweeting bird chirping in a meadow. Logic is a wreath of pretty flowers which smell
bad.

(Oh yes. Someone had to say that.)

saavik:

1) All characters can be finished, but one of the easier ones, it seems to me, is Valkryies since they are strong physically and start with a great shield.

2) Certain creatures have the ability to give you a special power upon eating them. Leprachauns (spelling is bad) and any Nymphs have the ability to give you Teleportation (random), Tengus can give either Teleportation or Teleportation Control (if you get Control Teleportation rocks since it lets you choose where to teleport).

There are a lot of creatures that will give you a special power. All you have to do is read what it tells you after you eat them.
"You feel full of hot air" -- Cold Resistance
"You feel a mild chill" -- Heat Resistance
"You feel jumpy" -- Teleportation
"You feel in control" -- Teleportation Control
"You feel healthy" -- Poison Resistance (I think)

etc. there are lots

4. The dog name is one of the possible names programmed in
5. Wights you want to kill fast. They can level drain you. Although eating a Wraiths corpse will let you gain a level.
6. Eat it or can it (if you have a Tinning kit) -- Trolls are a pain
