Has anyone played Rift?
Rift (video game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The new MMORPG? Its said to be competing with WoW. But I doubt it will last, just from previous experience. I haven't played it. Anyone played it? |

Funny I come back from a long departure and see this.
I just downloaded it. someone recommended it to me. almost identical to wow just more "real life" looking. animations are not as cartoonish. This looks and feels better. graphics are nice. I read it gears more towards pvp and all racial traits are balanced so no PVP OP stuff going on. I will update this later when i am not a measly level 5. |

I tried the free weekend last weekend (there might be another one this weekend). It really is almost exactly like WoW. There are a few key differences that I noticed.
There is a huge amount of customization of your skills and character classes. Within each of the 4 classes, there are 8 souls (skill trees) that are all drastically different from each other. You can have 3 active at a time. This leads to a lot of customization. I only played WoW in vanilla days, so compared to then, it's a ton more. And the other big thing I noticed was the rifts. Rifts are like mini quests that are random throughout the world. And, by random I mean they will happen right next to you while your questing ALWAYS. Essentially a rift opens and some monsters come out in waves that you have to kill. After you kill them all, you get some experience, some faction points, and some loot. The free weekend only allows you to play up to level 15 though. So, I don't know what happens after that. My guess is more of the same. I didn't try any PvP. I wanted to wait until 19, but I only found out about the level 15 cap when I hit 15.

I've been playing it since launch and dinged 50 a couple weeks ago. It really is an exact wow clone for the most part. Leveling is insanely fast.
Having rogue and mage classes that can dps, heal or tank is really awesome. I play a mage also and the chloromancer build might be the coolest healing class ever. You heal the main tank by damaging mobs. Right now it's impossible to find tanks, just a heads up for anyone who's considering what to roll. Healers surprisingly are a dime a dozen, but they can fill a dps or tank roll which still allows them to find groups which is cool. Even at 4 roles I'm finding myself wanting more because there's so many different roles you need to fill in this game.

I wonder if these games will ever move beyond the DPS-healer-tank model.
For the lack of current details, Blizzard's next-gen MMO looks promising: Quote:
They're basically calling it a MMOFPS. I don't think you can easily keep the DPS-healer-tank model without making it all so obvious. In the meantime any "new" project seems to be unable to shake the "WoW clone" label. They're like skins over top of a WoW gaming concept model. Beyond that, the only real differences seem to be features/options, rather than core gameplay innovations. /threadjack

You know every 10 levels or whatever you're going to move onto a new area, that's exactly the same as the last area. You're going to grab dozens of quests you wont even read and grind out mobs rinse and repeat. Then at max level you're going to grind the same dungeons again except on expect to gain one more point to + int than your last piece of gear. In EQ I could spend an entire day doing absolutely nothing but running around a new zone exploring or seeing some rare mob pop. Or sitting on the dock fishing, or training sand giants on people in oasis ![]() Maybe I'm just too old for these games now haha.

I completely agree. No one wants adventure, just spawns and loot. I've been spoiled by pen & paper RPGs, classic computer RPGs, and novels.
Sometimes I hate having an imagination. I've heard that about EQ before. I hope future games play up those elements. Imagine what would happen if WoW had most of its teleportation vapourized? Most players would have a conniption fit. Imagine having to travel without so much magic flying around? Oh ma gawd! Of course, WoW isn't about adventuring when you're maxed out. It wasn't that long ago that they didn't even have the random dungeon finder. That was the jumping of the shark with regard to the realities of actually being in a world, fantasy or not.

S plays Rift daily.
He reached level 50 and unlocked some "epic" things... the graphics are amazing and it seems to hold his attention better than EVE or WoW used to. I find the nerd-talk really amusing.

I have played...
EQ EQ2 Hellgate London (Yes, I was Flagshipped) Conan Aion DCUO And none of them are as entertaining to me as Rift has been. EQ2 was, ages ago, when you had to actually quest for citizenship and there was some complexity to it. Still, they dumbed down the factioning from the original EQ and have kept making things so easy that I stopped playing a few months ago and haven't looked back. I never liked WoW enough to play more than a day or two, so maybe the correlation to it being just the same/similar to Rift is something that happens after level 5 or so. Or maybe I'm allergic to Night Elves. I dunno. I love Rift because of the random invasions/portals that require you to drop everything and fight or die. I love that you can have 30+ people all hammering on a giant mob stalking through the zone randomly... with no lag. The crafting is kind of simplistic when compared to EQ2, and I would slaughter an entire village of boglings for more bag space, but one can't have everything. ![]() |
