Predecessors to Skyrim made use of an artificial intelligence system known as Radiant AI. Skyrim makes use of an updated system known as Radiant Story. As stated by creative director Todd Howard, "[w]e take the paradigm for reading AI, but we let people do what they want under extra parameters". This allows side-quests to be dynamically altered based on player actions; they are tailored to the player's abilities and progress within the game. As an example, the player might be sent off to a dungeon that has not been previously explored, and face enemies that are tailored to the player's preferred combat style. Aside from dynamically altering side-quests, Radiant Story furthers the personality of NPCs. They will interact with their environment, such as by working at farms, mills, woodcutting camps and mines. They will also interact with the player character, such as by requesting favours, asking for training, or challenging the player character to a duel; these random encounters are inspired by Fallout 3, an earlier game created by Bethesda.

Setting

Skyrim's game world is the eponymous province of Skyrim. It is a northern province of Tamriel, the continent on which all the games in the series have taken place. Skyrim is roughly the same size as Oblivion's game world Cyrodiil, which is 16 square miles (41 square kilometers) in area. Within Skyrim lie five cities, larger than Cyrodiil's cities, as well as smaller townships and expanses of wilderness. Much of Skyrim's topography is mountainous, and dragons are frequently encountered when exploring the wilderness. There are over 130 dungeons scattered across Skyrim, and when the player enters a dungeon for the first time, the monsters within will lock to the player's level permanently, even if visited later at a higher level. Fast-travelling is a returning feature, allowing the player to instantly travel to any location that has been previously visited.

h_j, would you mind listing your new rig's specs?
I'm in the market for a new computer and I need to know what I need for these types of games.
I'll be buying a fully built computer. (hardly any computer knowledge)

I'm excited but at the same time, kind of depressed about it. Between family and work I don't see me having enough time to immerse myself into this game. I don't think this is the type of game where you can play for an hour and walk away for a couple of days.

i pieced mine together and built it...

quad phenom II black 4core 3.2Ghz processor (black means you can experiment with things like overclocking and SLI/crossfire)

nvidia gtx460 gpu

8gb ram

550w psu

antec 902 case

i went all over for different parts but i was linked to most of them from slickdeals.net. it's a user submitted rebates and specials site. they also have fully assembled deals on desktops and notebooks sometimes.

Thanks for the site info, h_j. I'll check it out.

Do these type of games require that much ram?
I think my bro-in-law put in like 512 or something in mine when he refurbished it in the last crash. I told him it was too slow, be he said that's all I needed, since all I basically did was surf, watch clips and play facebook games. It got to be too slow to play the facebook games so I quit going. Then the power supply went.

Baraka_Guru 03-01-2011 08:27 PM

I don't think you can even get a new system with as little as 512 MB of RAM anymore. Most systems start at 1 GB and many come with at least 2 GB. For a game like this, much depends on your graphics card, but system memory should be at least 2 GB of RAM to avoid bottlenecks.

high_jinx 03-02-2011 12:40 PM

4gb is industry standard at the moment for gpu intesive games, but it'd probably be a good idea to go 6 or 8gb because it's not too much more expensive and technology is evolving fast nowadays.

Thanks for the info, guys.
With this game and games like Diablo III and Rift coming out, I'm finally interested enough in playing them, to get me a good enough computer. WOW looked too cartoony.

high_jinx 03-03-2011 10:54 AM

actually, i returned to wow because i built this rig and the new xpack came out and i'm really impressed with it graphics wise... it's more of a frank miller batman graphic novel than an archie comic now.
