Battlefield: Bad Company 2 FOV Calculator tells you how to do it. I wouldn't recommend it for recon players though as it decreases depth in favor of width of view. I tend to leave it at 55 if I'm going to be playing recon.

I couldn't stand it when the FOV was at the default setting. It felt like I needed to be 1 inch from my monitor. Weird. I think mine is at 65 now and it's perfect.

BTW the helicopter controls are the same as BF2/BF2142 which is FTW. I got in the blackhawk last night and my squadmates were like how do you fly so good if you're rank 1?? And I was like been doing this for 8 years bros ha ha ha ha ha

I think frontal knife damage should be halved, the way it is from behind is fine though. I sneak up on an entire roost of snipers, then I'm going to stab all of them and not have them going "why is there a machine gun going off behind me?"

I dont think you are. Something about this game feels odd from other fps games I play. It's either the netcode or hitboxes, but shot registration just doesn't not seem right.

I do like the knife one shot kills in this game and call of duty though, although not remotely realistic.

Are there any guns in the game that have a dot sight? It's getting really old using the iron sights on the guns that take up half the screen when you zoom in (like the PKM). I really don't understand why they make it so tunnel visioned when you look down the sights. BF2 didn't have this problem!!! Shooting people at a distance is really hard with the recoil too. I guess I'm just waiting on a good gun or something.

---------- Post added at 12:53 AM ---------- Previous post was Yesterday at 11:44 PM ----------

Not to mention the guns are peashooters in non-hardcore mode. Even in hardcore mode it takes forever to kill someone at a distance if you're not a sniper. I guess I've been playing Call of Duty for too long. Hardcore mode in COD = 1 bullet and you're dead.

I do sorta agree with Gabby though. In normal mode (non-hardcore) I can spray someone at point blank and it takes forever to kill them, enough for them to run up to me and knife me in the face after taking literally 1-2 seconds of pure LMG fire.

Las,

Things get better and better as you get unlocks. I now have a 4x optical scope on my M249 and it's like a completely different game. Similar advances with all the other kits as well.

I stick by my knife comments though, it's ridiculous! You're getting hit with bullets and you can still mow through it, plunge a knife between my helmet and kevlar, and keep moving!

Also!! How about the 40mm "noob tube" usage? A guy can plant one 4.5 feet from his own body and waste me with no damage to himself. Those things have fuzes, I think!

All in all though, I'm really enjoying it more and more. Fun game. I dig Rush a lot.

I think the scope is what I need in this game. So you can unlock mods for the guns like COD then? I was under the impression that once you get a gun, it comes like that and you can't change it.

nope, you continue to get kit mods like under mounted shotguns and red dot scopes as you progress. And the unluck interval is fairly short, so it never feels like an unlock is taking "forever".

I find the medic is the easiest "class" to get unlocks for and I think most would agree with me. Rez'n people is as many pts as killing 'em and you get bonuses for doing it in your squad. There's no question who needs rezzing because there's a giant defib symbol on your map and on the person's corpse.

Having the damndest time leveling my engineer, as he feels so weak. But apparently once you get the Gustav/AT4 you become a wrecking ball because I know I get smoked by them routinely.

Anyone else have any thoughts? Best weps for each class/etc?

I found recon to be the hardest to level. You can play them liked a gimped assault role if you have a selection of non class restricted guns I suppose. it's just that engineers always seem to be in supply of things to blow up or repair, medics are always in supply of dead bodies to rez, assault on camper friendly maps can just toss an ammo box in a wookie nest and speed level off that

Recon, well, getting kills? any class can do that. Support points only available via spotting & motion mines?

Not that spotting and motion mines are hard to get points off of, but I think it's pretty much worthless on hardcore mode servers AND it's the only support bonus contingent on everyone else actually doing their job and killing them before the "spot" wears off.

Recon is also stuck in an uncomfortable position of "OR"
while every other class gets "AND"

observe..

Assault. Kill dudes, AND supply ammo
Engies. Kill dudes, AND repair
Medic. Kill dudes, AND rez/heal
Recon, Kill dudes, OR, spot them.

You spot them, you get the 20/30 pts whatever and someone else gets 50 for the kill.
You shoot them, you get 50 at the exclusion of any chance of support points

Design flaw IMO.

that said, I have a lot of fun playing assault. Recon doesn't feel like a good class to me considering there are only really 2 maps large enough to take advantage of that 12x scope. Atacama Desert, and Arica Harbor.

Every other map has way too much cover to warrant gimping yourself the points that come with the built in "AND" support roles of the other 3 classes.

Besides, that 6x scope works great on an AN94 or M16 and takes guys down just as fast, doesn't have any of that nasty "dead zone" that recon/sniper guns suffer from.

I just downloaded this game from Steam yesterday and all in all I'm unimpressed so far. The single player campaign is not that interesting to me. The action is not all that exciting and the combat is just...dull. I haven't tried multiplayer yet because I wanted to play through most of the campaign first to familiarize myself with the game but I find it not holding my attention like the MW2 campaign did.

Couple other issues I have are the sounds. The sound is very flat in the game. The gun I am firing sounds like someone 30 feet away is shooting it. The explosion sounds aren't very good either.

I'm not impressed with the weapon selection or the weapon models. I mean the XM-8? Really??! That gun was experimental and never got passed the development phase..why is an operational unit using it? All of the first person gun models lack detail and the coloring just seems off as well. They are too bright or something I'm not really sure.

Maybe I'll try out multiplayer tonight and see if I like it any better. Right now I'm felling like i wasted $50.

It's the first rocket/recoil less rifle upgrade for the engineer. It has significantly more splash damage (that I've noticed) than the RPG. It's the nasty.

Ok this game is starting to get on my nerves. I have the optical zoom now for the medic guns and I still get owned by snipers from halfway across the map in every game mode. The guns are so damn weak that even if I see someone, I pop them once and they take cover and no kill. If I spray them then the recoil makes me miss. Are there any guns in this game that don't suck dick at anything but medium range?? Short and long range are the bane of my existence. I wish there was a super hardcore mode or something where 1 or 2 bullets is a kill rather than spraying 50 rounds into someone (literally) at 10 feet away and them knifing you in the face.

There is a hardcore mode....

Getting owned by snipers doesn't matter unless you're playing offense and you have limited tickets or whatever.

on the flip side, snipers on offense are pretty goddamn loltastic since they rarely ever get up from the nest to actually help push on rush or contribute on conquest points. Usually the recon vs recon war is a completely separate subgame that I just laugh at since both sides are just playing to stroke their epeens.

I dunno, you can play recon for a few days straight to get a feel for where they will be hiding so you can just walk around as any other class with your LoS in mind at all times. but if you get popped, it's not the end of the world. Camper #215 just wasted his time popping you while you were probably being helpful playing a medic.

I can't answer about the medic guns but I know assault gets some nice guns. I can pop people from some pretty impressive distances with the m16.
The best people in this game aren't running and gunning, they're creeping (quickly) along from cover to cover trying to find advantageous positioning to hit the blindside of a victim while being in the sweetspot rangewise. It's very much a skillful asset to be sneaky and try to find an entrance that doesn't have cover.

I always feel like I'm walking in to a game of russian roulette every time I go in to that building type that has the staircase in the middle and skylights. I wish this game had flashbangs, haha.

I gotta echo pretty much everything that Shauk said. I do very much love the 8x Sniper teams on Offense when I'm D. Fine, shoot the crap outa me, but you're not getting any closer to "B."

I find the M60 w/ 4x to be pretty accurate and mean. I have not gotten the M16, though people say very good things about it.

Shauk is also right about knowing where to look to find potential enemies. After playing Africa Harbor 10 or so times when I *do* go Recon I know almost exactly where people are going to be. Now, I can't kill them in one shot (weak gun) but at least I know I'm improving somewhat.

Stick with it. My K/D ratio was 0.6 when I first started out, now it's steadily creeping up.

I wish there was a hardcore mode that still had the UI. The UI in COD4/MW2 being gone in HC isn't a big deal, but in BC2 the UI is very important because it's so minimal. Not being able to tell if your tank can take 1 more RPG hit is FTL.

BTW I had a blast playing last night on the one snowy forest map.

you complain too much. lol.

you have to consider all the factors here. You're obviously new and haven't unlocked a lot of stuff yet. Thus, you're on the bottom of the food chain.

Things stacked against you right now is that your stock gun still takes 6ish body rounds or so to put someone down (in normal mode) out of a 30 bullet clip. If you hit 20% accuracy, you'll proooobably down someone in that clip.

the later guns like the AN94/m16 whatever take people down in 3-4 shots, and fire in controlled bursts so youll usually take someone down in 2 trigger pulls instead of the pray and spray recoil you've got with ironsights and stock fodder weaponry.

still takes some fire discipline with those weapons not to just blow your clip in panic just because you've got bullets whizzing your way.

Those are just baseline numbers, doesn't even include factors like people with the body armor spec or the upgraded ammo power spec.

Hardcore mode is pretty much 1 shot 1 kill or maybe 2-3 if you're still using crap weapons.

If the guns are really that much different as you level up then that makes a lot of sense (even if it's annoying). I'd rather skill have more to do with whether you take someone out over the accuracy and power of the gun, even level 1 noob vs level 20 guy.

The 1-bullet kills in HC mode sound good, but surely the guns aren't 300% more powerful as you level? (1 bullet kill vs 3 bullets to kill)

I have to agree on the early medic guns, the recoil is a huge pain, and they couldn't drop a kitten. But since grabbing the t88, the medic has been a blast to play. It has minimal recoil, and while a little under powered, I have no problem catching people from a distance. But if they gave LMGs the range and power of a sniper rifle, what would be the point of recon?

As for the role of recon, I think you are completely underestimating it Shauk. I know I complained earlier about the sniper rifles, but my mind is completely changed. In conquest I can often single handedly hold a flag from the right position with the sniper, and in rush I can usually keep one of the objectives clean on defense, especially after the tanks have opened up the walls. On offense you are a little more limited, however you can keep people clear of a set charge, and again its a lot easier if the walls hae been blown out by tanks. You just have to be more concerned about winning the round than personal stats.

Anywho, still loving the game, best so far in the BF series.

Wow I just played a few matches and I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of this game. I went 18-5 in one match with the PKM, got like 3,000 points in 1 match as medic. Sometimes just waiting for the chance to attack while your squad spawns around you is the best choice instead of rushing in. I used to be a BF fanatic but I haven't played a BF game in 3 years so I guess I was a little rusty ha ha ha ha

That's the thing, for me, the most effective path to playing this game long term is to stop playing stuff once you've maxed it out (like i'm max recon/assault/vehicle right now, so i need to work on my engineer and medic.

after that it's about points per game, and for that, classes that have support roles are the way to go usually. (it may vary from map to map)

I still feel there are only really 2 (maybe 3) maps big enough to require the range that a 12x scope brings you.

when weighing the advantages of each class vs another, it makes me wonder why I would choose a class that weak in close quarters and lacks a unique support function (it's all about the points maaaaan!) vs anything else.

I find the number one class right now that I want to stab in the stupid face are medics.

I get mowed down by them more than any other because with access to the 4x scope and the ammo upgrade, coupled with freaking 100 BULLETS before they have to reload = ultimate spray & pray.

It's gotten to the point while I level that I just tag along with a light level medic or something and wait for them to die, grab their kit, res them, and play as a medic while I level something else

yeah so right now my play patch is, points for class unlocks, followed by points for leveling to 50 or whatever (play whatever is suited to your situation), followed by play to win I guess? I guess if I don't care about points or leveling then I'd play recon to cover mcoms or flags, but I dunno, a high K/D ratio doesn't get you anything in this game, nor does winning or losing aside from a handful of bonus points.

Fighting groups of medics is oh so fun, the mass spray of bullets and them constantly reviving each other. Those later guns make all the difference. Even with the early unlocks you tell a huge difference right off the bat. First assault rifle vs XM-8 no contest. the XM-8 blows it out of the water even with iron sights. I'm still using the basic sniper rifle though because the few I've unlocked so far are all the high rate of fire low damage rifles, can't wait to get the 50cal sniper rifle, I've had a chance to use it a few times and it's quite a bit more effective.

Overall I think I preferred the leveling system in 2142 better, your not linked to playing a class with it's underpowered starting guns to level it, exp is the same no matter how you earn it and you choose what to unlock with each rank-up. That and for the MOST part the higher level guns in 2142 didn't seem to outright TRUMP the basic guns, they were more specialized in their uses so they tended to conform better to different play styles, but at least the new players had a fighting chance.

I'm so hot and cold with this game, sometimes I'll go 3/11 scraping by to get any pts I can and then the next two maps I'll be 2:1 K/D ratio and crushing everyone under my boot.

Strange. It isn't always bound to whether I'm winning or losing the map either.

Is Alt-fire the last upgrade for vehicle? I just got it tonight, WAY ahead of any other classes. I got some lucky streaks with the Abrams/Bradley.

Yes! The Krylov in 2142 was the best gun in the game IMO which is one of the first if not the first gun you get. I also hate not choosing your unlocks and just getting them randomly as you level.
