PS3 Media Server
PS3 Media Server
anyone else use this? Been rocking it for about a month now. it's pretty awesome, I can toss a bunch of dvd iso's in to a folder and it'll play them right off the network. The faster your network connection, the higher quality content you can pull on the media server. For 720/1080 quality videos you might wanna toss those directly on the ps3 HD if you don't have a good computer for transcoding or if your network is too slow to handle it. other than that I have no complaints. |

will this allow me to play .mkv files on my ps3? I have lots of videos in .mkv format. I can just convert them but I was wondering if there was a way to just play them without converting.

Yeah, that's what I've been using since it came out.

PS3 Media Server - Tversity Killer? - Digital Forum
thread is from Jan 09 so I don't know how tversity compares now but apparently it's faster and got a better feature set. |

well it installed in 1min. detected my ps3 from the pc and seems to work a ton faster. now to try it out!
---------- Post added at 10:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:36 PM ---------- surprising so far. it works a ton faster and better than tversity. it doesn't make stupid folders. So far, I will only work with this. no more tversity. Thanks for sharing! now is there a way to see the content from any other PC?!

I was able to watch a 720p movie using this over the wireless connection! It stuttered once but that was it. very surprising!

It hasn't shown me one error or 1 slowdown. the interface being a windows type interface rather than a flash one is a ton faster to use. I wish tversity was like this because there are so much about it I like but the speed and efficiency of the PS3mediaServer kills it.
going from a wifiG PC to a wifiN Router to wifi PS3 playing a full DVD gave me some stutter. But nothing crazy. I will hook it back to wifiN or gigabit connected. I think i'll google how to run internet radio from this. Unless someone knows how to run INTERNET radio .m3u or just the address from the ps3?

I also use PS3 Media server, even though I don't have a PS3. I do however have a Samsung LCD TV that supports DLNA... So I can use PS3MS to play movies (and mp3's and pictures) on my TV (using a wireless N network by the way).
There are some problems though. The TV doesn't support all possible codecs. I can transcode most stuff with PS3MS, but then I can't seem to fast-forward the movies (they'll stop playing). But overall, it's a great program. |

With TVersity, if you fast forward or rewind a movie, the audio loses sync and for the rest of the movie you will have Chinese dubbing unless you start over.
Especially true for HD content.
