Elite has a new version called OOlite - it is free to play and is quite addictive.

I checked it out, installed it, played it, and love it. The gameplay is pretty much identical to the olde version, but it has much better graphics. :)
Oh, and I got shot down by a bunch of pirates too. Crap. :(
