Game moments that (almost?) made you cry...
okay.. I've been drinking a little bit.. so, per custom, I must post that foremost as a disclaimer...
Anyway, there have been times in videogames (as well as films, songs, etc., albeit these moments are not so rare) that I felt like crying my eyes out. I can only think of a one. Metal Gear Solid 4 -- Visiting Shadow Moses. As soon as I heard the opening lyrics to 'The Best is Yet to Come', I just teared up. I played the first MGS constantly for at least a year when it first was released... I must have been about 9. All of the things that have happened since then and all that has changed in my life.. everything came rushing to me when MGS4's contrast and allusion to MGS was made so blatant by this lyrics.. 10 years really is a long, trying time. Watching Old Snake, broken down and way past his prime, revisit a setting not seen in 10 years, and given a 10-year facelift, made me feel as though I'd stepped into my own past with a view much clearer than blurry old memories. I could explain the remorse I feel for all that I've done since I was 9 years old, but that would be senseless.. Anyway, for once, I felt as though I could connect with a piece of software. ---------- Post added at 08:06 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:01 AM ---------- also that scene.. and really, MGS isn't my favorite series by any means, but the story is unbeatable imo. |

cliche, but only because it's true...
Still gets me a little teary-eyed even now.

Totally agreed with twisted mosaic. What it feels like losing your best friend, is in Shadow of the Colossus. Because you're seemingly the only human being in a world so different and dangerous, with opponents as big as mountains, you get used to having an ally you need and trust.
What else. The ending of Metal Gear Solid 3, when all the flowers in the field turn red after the fight with The Boss. I've rarely seen something as beautiful and poignant as that scene. Still my favorite MGS game by far.

MGS4 had some pretty serious moments for me. It didn't almost make me cry, but it definitely struck a cord. Spoiler: The scene where Raiden saves Snake at Shadow Moses. Also the part at the end where you're crawling through the microwave tunnel.
I also have to agree about FFX, I really didn't see that ending coming at all...

When I was a kid. My dad was playing Goonies on the NES and I was fucking around near the console and he'd told me to get away like 10 times and then I accidentally hit the reset button. He whipped me and sent me to bed. That's the only time video game made me cry.
Both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus were sad games to me. They both had very emotional endings. Terra losing her Esper in FF6 was pretty sad too. I've always thought this video was sad.

I don't know if she cried, exactly, but StellaLuna was very disturbed about having to euthanize her Weighted Companion Cube in Portal. The conversation went:
"Do I have to?" "Well, yeah. The game won't let you go on if you're carrying it." "But it's my cube!" "I understand, but you have to toss it to solve the puzzle." "Well maybe I'll just stay here then!" "Well. You could do that. Or you could keep playing the game..." "But it's my cube!" "I know." "It will never lie to me!" "I know." "AAAAaaaa!!" |

Definitely Aeris.. Mass Effect had a few too. Like saving/killing the Rachni Queen.
A video for those of you who haven't played.. it's a bit long, but some of the setup..

Off topic, but watching that Mass Effect video was a little weird for me. I just went through that scene a few weeks ago and it was quite different. My Shepard looks different, I had Wrex in my party and he was quite vocal about the rachni wiping out his race, All the armors were different.. It's like watching a movie with different actors. Heck, Shepard had the same voice but coming from that face it just sounded different.

When my Ocarina of Time bugged out in the water temple and I kicked my N64 and thought I broke it. That had me choked up pretty hard.

Are you sure that it wasn't just the Water Temple being hard? ha ha ha ha ha
That dungeon is known as being one of the hardest ever. I'm pretty sure the way I beat it wasn't even the intended way. If it was, then good god what were they thinking.

The cinematic for this made me cry: Battle of Angrathar the Wrathgate - WoWWiki - Your guide to the World of Warcraft
Oh, and when Thrall meets Greatmother Geyah in Nagrand. There are lots of things in WoW that made me cry, and not just losing rolls for loot...

"No, no, try raising the water level again. It has to be in that room." "I've been there 6 times!" and on, and on. That has to be one of the reasons Twilight Princess is said to be a next gen OOT. The water temples in both are pretty damn tough. Almost like they decided to recreate the experience for the Zelda fans. Oh, and Shadow of The Colossus. Basically when the game ended, I wanted more. I wasn't ready to leave yet, even after scaling and taking down so many massive, cool looking beasts. Especially the spectacular battles, like the one with the flying snake-like colossus.

In my opinion, music is a key part of how emotional a scene can be, and games typically don't play the right music during emotional scenes, when movies can usually pull it off. The Aeris death scene wouldn't be nearly as emotional if that eternal, unbearably beautiful and sad music didn't start playing as the Materia fell out of her hair.

Am I a complete dork for thinking first of a World of Warcraft quest? Auberdine, I think, male night elf on the docks. You get a quest from him to go to a graveyard and you have to kill a female ghost of a nightelf. Then when you go turn in the quest they have a little scene. It's done quite well, I thought. Didn't cry, but then I have balls like a man. But it did make me go "awwwww" sadly.
