Popcap Games: Plants vs. Zombies
I didn't see another post about this yet, so for anyone that was addicted to Peggle, it looks like another time-waster is about to arrive in May 2009:
(If you have never tried Peggle, find the free trial and download it. Seriously, it is addicting as heck) |

IGN and Eurogamer both give this game a 9.0 rating:
IGN: Plants vs. Zombies Review Plants vs. Zombies Review - Page 1 // PC /// Eurogamer - Games Reviews, News and More After recently being talked into getting Left4Dead, and realizing how much my skills at FPS's have deteriorated, I am seriously considering getting this... |

Forget the game, that song is gonna be stuck in my head for the next week or so.
...okay, I'm gonna play the game, too.

Well, the trial did not impress me at all. I love tower defense type games so I was very excited to see that PopCap was making one in this, but...was not so exciting. I think part of what made their other games so instantly entertaining is that you can play them in tiny increments of time and still have fun. You know immediately how to play (even if not to play well). This game has a lot more depth, but the depth isn't really...interesting.
I played through 7 levels doing nothing but building a row of extra sun plants in the back then filling my screen with the little pea shooters. None of the other plants were even passingly useful. It's cute and the concept is fun, but I'm not going to shell $20 to find out when the first hour was so underwhelming. Too bad. |

It's being offered on Steam for $9.99US - if that price stays then maybe I'll still try it. But if it's $20 by the time I'm ready then I'm not sure. If anyone else has opinions please let us know. Thanks for the info guys! |

So I didn't buy it, but I played a bit faster and got a bit farther. It does get more complicated and more interesting, particularly once you get to the first night phase instead of the day phase and start having to choose which plants to take instead of having all of them at your disposal. I can see it getting quite a bit more exciting with more varied environments (water, different times of day, etc.) but the preview really doesn't shine the way it'd need to for me to be willing to plunk coin on it.
At $10, I'd be much more willing to go with it, though. |

I wasted a solid 2 hours last night and I can't really explain why... It was fun, but not a game that I can see myself normally wasting that amount of time on.
I think the anticipation of earning my next plant or upgrade is keeping me going. I'm assuming that the game gets ridiculously difficult with giant laser blasting plants, which I'm looking forward to.

You can only attack them when they pop up, so put a wall nut on top of a lily pad. You usually don't have time to kill them before they can take down the peashooter or something.
