Can anyone play Minesweeper???

When I first got my computer, I would just log on, and when there was nothing to do, I would play Solitaire, but that bored the hell outta me. So I decided to learn how to play Minesweeper.
Mistake.
I soon figured it out, and now I do it without even thinking. While a webpage is loading, or a song downloads, I just play away. I play that damn game in my head during the day. I shit you not. But the obsession is subsiding now. Its becoming more casual, thank God. But I was just wondering, are there any TFPers out there who can relate to this?
If so, then post your record times, mine are:
Beginner- 5 seconds
Intermediate- 35 seconds
Expert- 103 seconds

Thanks!

GakFace 07-02-2003 06:09 PM

You... my fellow TFPer are a freak!

But of course, thats a total overstatement if we ever look at bones....

/me looks at bones
Yep, Yeah, you're not so much the freak I first stated you to be.
I can play it, but I don't get too addicted. When I'm hyper, I might just customize it to the largest size with only 10 mines and win in 1 second which only fuels my psychoness, but thats just me... hehehe

Feel better? ;)

crow_daw 07-02-2003 10:10 PM

naw not really
man i cant help it, it sucks.

juanvaldes 07-02-2003 11:59 PM

Mega Minesweeper.

It has a setting that:
• Support for games up to 32,767, x 32,767 fields with up to 1,073,676,288 mines.

I was well over 8 hours into such a game....think I got some 15% done. Needless to say the mode is called "Crazy"

GoldenOuroboros 07-03-2003 01:30 AM

woah... I play the new minesweep in the new messenger that's just come out against my GF.. gets interesting at times. hehe.. so I've figured it out.. haven't hand any obsessions tho :P

Spinach_Indeed 07-03-2003 04:45 AM

I had took a programing class my Senior year of High School, There were only 4 of us in there, so we'd just do our programing as a team and finish whatever we were supposed to do within the first 30 minutes of class, which left us over an hour with nothing to do. We downloaded Emulators and would LAN Mario Kart and Street Fighter, until the teacher started deleting everything off the hard drives, so it got to be a hassle re-download everything. So we just started having Minesweeper tournaments. I remember my best time on Intermidate was somewhere around 45-50 seconds.

Sparhawk 07-03-2003 06:34 AM

Back in the lame ol' days, one of my proudest moments was beating expert mindsweeper at 79 seconds. I managed to get it down to 75 once. Sad.

Oh, and I got lucky once on beginner and cleared it in 1 second.

I've done the same thing with solitaire, made it into a speed game. Can't remember my best time off the top of my head though, it was under a minute...

a_divine_martyr 07-03-2003 07:15 AM

Beginner - 10 seconds.

I win.

crow_daw 07-03-2003 09:39 AM

Sparhawk, good job dude. And that shit juan is talking about is NUTS. I really hope I never stumble across that, because I'll be forced to attempt it.

Had a similar situation in my programming class. As the year went on the teacher started letting us get away with more and more. We've had Quake 2 lans and once we even loaded up Postal 2 in there granted it ran like shit. Sometimes its nice having a lazy teacher. Harder to learn but after you do get away with a lot.

Bonesaw 07-03-2003 03:21 PM

Did a search on Google for Mega Minesweeper. Found lots of stuff for Mac. nuthin' for the PC. Shucks. :(

I was lookin' forward to trying something crazy too :(

Found some other interesting sites dedicated to the math involved in programing the "randomness" of where the mines are placed. Math makes my brain hurt!

oh yeah. it was some students project a few years back. I'm sure someone has written a mine sweeper for doz that has as many mines. it's not that hard....

bundy 07-03-2003 05:36 PM

crow, you sir, are a worthy adversary.

my best times are..

beginner - 8secs
Intermediate - 40secs
expert - 108secs

are there world championships for minesweeper?

Gortexfogg 07-05-2003 04:11 AM

I just play minesweeper when I have nothing else to do at the moment. My best beginner time is like 35 seconds...

But I always remember my uncle's secret strategy to winning. He said you just have to imagine that each square is a city block and millions of lives are in your hands...

cheerios 07-05-2003 10:35 AM

I've done 7 on beginner, can't recall my other scroes. my mission in life used to be to knock my dad off hte high-score tables. that, and tetris. ooooh, one day... :P

The_Dude 07-05-2003 10:48 AM

there's a hack for this minesweeper for windows.

open up minesweeper, start the game by clickin on a square.

now, press the 'show desktop' button on the quicklaunch.

now, open minesweeper back up again and the clock has stopped!!

i accidentally found it.

btw, i've beaten all 3 levels of it

why don't you just edit the score file to give yourself a time of 1 second?

crow_daw 07-05-2003 02:09 PM

bundy, I don't know if there are world championships, but I know that there is a list of the 100 greatest players. I'm not on it, but I could be. Its just kinda time consuming and it requires lots of proof for something that isn't gonna help me anyway.

Quant 07-06-2003 05:43 AM

I had to delete it, because I was doing the same thing...thinking out mine patterns as I fell asleep was amusing, but a little disconcerting. I think I managed to get under 100 s on expert, but I have friends who were far better than I.

rodimus 07-07-2003 01:21 PM

i love that game. no one can beat my times. i espescially love it when i get bored at work:)

NeverBorn 07-07-2003 01:41 PM

I despise people who have high end computers, yet sit on their ass and play solitaire and minesweeper all day. Use your power!

sadistikdreams 07-08-2003 06:54 PM

aw. i used to play it ALL THE TIME on Windows 3, but my XP doesnt have it.

westothemax 07-12-2003 06:53 PM

I had a record for Beginner: 8 seconds

I had to write a version of minesweeper in Java for my first programming class.

Commander Keen 07-13-2003 08:52 PM

beginner 7 secs
intermediate 54 secs

(i've never beaten expert) amazing huh?

Commander Keen 07-13-2003 08:56 PM

maybe if i could get my hands on some prescription amphetamines...

wlcm 07-13-2003 10:23 PM

That obession sounds like me except for the whole thinking about playing when i'm not. I used to play a lot.. almost as bad as my screen shotting solitare everytime i beat it under 70 seconds.

beginner - 6
intermediate - 31
expert - couldn't even beat

TerresqueÜ 07-13-2003 11:37 PM

I don't even know how to play properly :(

djflish 07-14-2003 11:14 AM

I used to get paid £4.50 an hour to play it at work!

Beginner - 9s
Intermediate - 52s
Expert - 215s

Eviltree 07-14-2003 06:30 PM

I just can't beat the damn expert, no matter how hard I try, it ends up in a situation where I have to guess, and I always bloody well die.

Bill Door 07-15-2003 08:17 PM

Whee!

Beginner: 6 seconds
Intermediate: 24 seconds
Expert: (an unamazing) 104 seconds

No cheating or anything, either.

beginner - 10 secs
intermediate - 32 secs
expert - 134 secs

G5_Todd 07-19-2003 07:31 AM

my best is

8
35
??? havent tried super hard on that yet.....ur guys scores are sweet thou

Akira 07-20-2003 01:06 PM

The same thing happened to me. I would play the game everytime I could and yes even in my head sometimes. Don't worry it'll go away in like a month, as long as you try not to play every 5 seconds.
Best Times:
Beginner: 4
Intermediate: 38
Expert: 96 (yeah under 100(now I feel as if I've wasted so much time))

Soda_BoB 07-22-2003 04:44 AM

I like the game, its fantastical!!

asiansrock 07-22-2003 09:05 AM

Wow.. I'm horrible at minesweeper :) Mine sweeper on beginner owns me half the time.

Night13 07-22-2003 10:27 AM

I at one point obsessed over minesweeper... would play it during the long load times on websites.

I haven't played it at all since getting my new computer and cable modem.

This thread has made me start playing it again, sadly.

nothingx 07-22-2003 04:49 PM

My girlfriend does that all the time!! Its scary to watch her play because she doesn't even think about it... her hand just goes to the squares without the mines... totally creepy.

07-22-2003 04:51 PM

eh i'ved tried to play that thing many times i just cant get the hang of it so i gave up on the thing lol

thephuse 07-22-2003 10:47 PM

gahh~ to annoying for my ADD mind~~
make that ADHD..

limproach 07-22-2003 10:58 PM

Minesweeper is great for killing time, I love it.

but now I'm into Spider Solitaire, that's good stuff

crow_daw 07-22-2003 11:05 PM

Holy Lord, Night13, I apologize for awakening this demon in you again.

Garbalo69 07-23-2003 07:27 AM

Minesweeper is a damn hard game, but its possible to beat it :)

madgamer 07-23-2003 08:32 AM

I was never really any good at it. I could only win the custom games of the fewest blocks available.

DrJekyll 07-23-2003 06:41 PM

Beginner - 8s
Advanced - 37s
Expert - 151s (crappy, I know)

I know what you guys are talking about with the playing it without playing it. Any time I play Freecell, Solitaire, Tetris, Dr. Mario, DDR, or Minesweeper too much, I close my eyes and visualize the cards or pieces.

08-04-2003 09:28 PM

Minesweeper is my nemesis. I try to play it about once a month, and I'm no good at it, no matter how you slice it.

Looften 08-04-2003 10:21 PM

I'm not a doctor, but I reccomend anybody who participates in this threat to stay far away from any gateway drugs.

I'm actually horrible at minesweeper, I never sat down to learn it. If I have free time, I play solitare, which I'm also rather poor at. :hmm:

Speed_Gibson 08-05-2003 03:38 AM

I have never really seriously played minesweeper, and sucked at it when I did attempt it. I am the kind of person that does not install those when infectin....uh installing a MS OS on my system.
the only thing of that nature that ever got my time was majhong (usually a MS-DOS version)

obediah 08-05-2003 06:49 AM

I wasted some time with minesweeper.

more with freecell through.

fartre 08-05-2003 05:52 PM

my wife is awesome at minesweeper, but I am way better at baseball, so it all works out!

Semi-Normal 08-06-2003 07:12 AM

I play from time to time, scores are pretty crap though.

Beginner - 7
Intermediate - 44
Expert - 123

agentsmith 08-06-2003 09:30 AM

beginner - 4 seconds (fluke)

intermediate - 34

expert - I forget

but I am by no means obsessed with the game.

dy156 08-06-2003 02:42 PM

Some of you guys are nuts! I had always thought my expert time of 147 was absolutely incredible until I just read all of this.

Vyk 08-06-2003 04:10 PM

I enjoy mine sweeper but there's just something about it that my brain can't wrap around. My best time are no where near ya'lls :)

lalalapi 08-06-2003 09:59 PM

Inspired by some of these posts, I just beat Expert for the first time. 131 doesn't seem too bad.

baboora 08-06-2003 10:45 PM

the minesweeper in the latest messenger is hella addictive since u can play online against your friends...i am officially hookedddd

titsmurf 08-06-2003 11:20 PM

I used to think I was good at minesweeper. I'd play a few hours of it in school every week. Then I found this page, with videos of people playing the game. Now, I realise I am nothing.

If you want to see somebody finish the expert level in 43 seconds, give this page a look.

http://metanoodle.com/minesweeper/videos.html

(you'll need to install the codex at the top of the page before you can see the videos.)

sadatx 08-07-2003 12:24 AM

Great time waster

If you want to really chew up some time try this:

I call it the Game Chain (real creative, I know)

Play all the standard games on your computer in a row. Example: Solitaire, Minesweeper, Freecell, Hearts

Here are the rules: You MUST beat all the games in a row. If you lose at any point in the game chain you have to go back to the beginning. So in the above example if I got to Freecell and lost, I'd have to go back to Solitaire and start over.

You can add whatever small games your computer has to the chain. And you can put them in any order you want, but once you start the game you have to stick with the chosen order of games. You can also choose whatever level of difficulty (like with minesweeper) you want for the games.

It's simple and it wastes much time.

Time yourself and try to do it faster each time you play. Of course there's always the possibility of it taking forever since there are so many chances to lose. But, hey, that's where the challenge is.

far2bored 08-07-2003 09:55 AM

Hrm.. as I recall there is a cheat in minesweeper.. hold down shift? Or maybe it was ctrl + alt + shift. I don't remember exactly. But it makes a single pixel in the upper left corner turn black or white depending if the block under the mouse had a mine or not.

The alacrity of the cursor in that video is simply disturbing.

Devilinmypants 08-29-2003 06:23 AM

i dont remember records, i was just happy when i beat the worst it could throw at me

battlemouth 09-03-2003 08:58 PM

its a rather simple game once you get the hang of it, its simple logic.

CapnWaffle 09-03-2003 10:06 PM

Minesweeper has stole many hours of my life.

What I find really amusing, is that when most people see me play, they're all like "Huh? You mean there's actual strategy? I just assumed it was luck."

I mean, really. Shouldn't the numbers give you some hint?

Juxtapozed 09-05-2003 06:34 PM

I've got around 30 seconds tolerance for that game
