Best/Hardest Bosses!
Oh no, here's the boss!
The level boss, it's like being hit in the face with a sack of nostalgia isn't it? This thread is devoted to them, which boss is your favorite? Which boss was the hardest? For me, it has to be Emerald Weapon from Final Fantasy 7 for hardest. This mother fucker takes forever to kill with maxed out characters and the best items in the game, and even then you're lucky. The best boss is a tough one, I want to say the giant dude on the hill in mario 64. The one you get to beat the hell out of, pick up and chuck off the mountain. That guy is fun to hell. |
I play NWN on a server with a persistant world, the designers have built one of the best atmospheres I have ever seen in an online game. Including thier boss type creatures.
The best one I've had the pleasure of killing was one they have dubbed. The Great Wondering One. In older games, I would have to say Bowser from Mario Brothers. Don't ask why, I just enjoy memories from the way-back-past. |
I though the boss' in Devil May Cry 1 were utterly fantastic... just thinking about them makes me want to go out and buy that game again...
|
Shin-Akuma from Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. I've been able to beat any computer-controlled opponent before him. Beat him once, but the PS2 memory card has since gotten erased.
The very first time I beat Zeromus from Final Fantasy 2 (or 4 if your anal about nomenclature) I only had Edge standng. I couldn't believe I actually won the fight. Galamoth from Castlevania : Symphony of the Night, until I found out you can heal lightning damage from him. And the damn last boss from Rez. |
It's a little obscure, but some of the funnest boss fights I can remember were from "Mischief Makers" on the N64. Also, there was a level in one of the TMNT games where you had to toss Foot Soldiers towards the screen to defeat the boss- that was pretty innovative.
There is only one best, though... Psycho Mantis, from MGS. (I... can't read your mind!?!?) |
That damn final ship on bionic commando where you have to jump of the cliff and shoot just at the right moment to get it into its windsheild and blow it up. If you miss, you have to do the whole freakin level over again. Needless to say, i dove off that damn cliff a hundred or more times before getting it right. I just hope all that waisted time gave me better hand-eye coordination or something, other than carpal tunnel.
|
I agree with RedComet, Psycho Mantis was pretty fun, but I also agree with Deflok that every single boss in Devil May Cry 1 was hardcore awesomeness.
But my favorite boss fight in that game was Mundus in his first form, becuase that was the only time you ever got to go full form Sparda demon form and grow wings and just rock a lot of ass. |
The final boss from Jet Grind Radio..
grind grind, grind up giant gears.. spray tags while avoiding a giant golden firebreathing rhino.. then jump onto a giant turntable and spray the dj, while rhinoheaded go-go girls dance in cages.. ....trippy....... |
Gameboyfunness
Metriod Fusion..the big dragon looking thing. I walked into that room with 110 rockets, came out with MAYBE 10, and i didn't miss once. Not that hes hard to kill just a die hard. and as if it wasn't hard enough to beat the damn boss...you have to beat that little sphere that he becomes...lucky it doesn't shoot plasma at you :)
|
The best boss I can think of, was from Chrono Trigger
It's this guy, dressed as a Fisherman named Miguel. I think he was supposed to be the Gaurdian of something.. but I played the game so long ago I can't remember. One of the.. most non intimidating bosses I've ever seen. I could never beat Sin from the end of FFX, but that was mainly because Blitzball was the only thing I liked from that game, and I spent no time leveling up or doing any sidequests. |
How about the whirlwind god thingee in Serious Sam Second Encounter?
It picked you up and chucked you around while doing the same thing to a bunch of monsters that want to kill you. I thought he was a really creative monster, and a lot of fun to fight. |
When you have to fight that cyborg ninja (Grey Fox) in MGS. Sure it's easy to get the hang of, but try fighting him on harder difficulty, low rations + heavy attacks = annoyance.
|
Video games always have a pattern of some sort to work out to kill "The Boss" , so I don't find them especially hard. Annoying most definately, but not hard.
Back in my MUDding days, there were several *bosses* that seemed impossible. The MUD in question: Apocalypse V ( diku ). The *boss* in question: The Ankou . I still can't figure out how he's killed. He beats the everloving shit out of you everytime you touch him, ( he returns a % of the damage that you deal to him. ), Teleports to a GOD ONLY room when he reaches a certain # of hitpoints ( you can't teleport/scry/portal there at all ), and he heals himself something massive... Another of the *bosses*. Not exactly impossible, but takes a group of smart/heavily equipped people to take her down... The Black Widow, Alcina. Just reaching her room takes about an hour & half of preparation. Your group has to just about wipe out everything else in the zone to reach her. Then the fact that she's in a one-person-only room, and the entrance is small-sized. ( 5 player sizes in the game. Tiny/small/normal/large/giant. ) . She's got Cloak Of Midnight ( makes it impossible to see anything ), The same *skill* that the Ankou has with giving back your own damage, Fire breath/poison/cold breath ( any single one of those can kill in one shot. ), Paralyzes, and backstabs! To make it even better, the room is soundproof, so you can't escape out or call for help, and she'll loot your items off your corpse if/when you die. .... There's not many things I could compare the experience to in a video-based game. But I will say that it did take me a few hours to figure out Ruby/Emerald in FFVII. But after you've got 3x master summon matiera, 3x mime, 3x w-summon etc. etc. etc. it's pretty much a piece of cake . You can pair up the materia in such a way that after your first cast of KOTR, your whole party just continues to recast it, while absorbing back all their HPS & MPS ad infinitum. But using that setup alone with ruby got me whacked quite a few times, until I started using Alexander at the start. |
Seymour Flux in FFX just becasue I can't beat him yet...
One of the funnest bosses (if you can call them that) was the final battle in Shenmue where you fight 70 guys. It wasn't hard, but felt real good taking out 3-5 guys at once! That one opera singing boss in 'Conker's Revenge' that you had to throw rolls of toliet paper at was pretty fun too. |
Any guy with a lightsaber in JK2: Jedi Outcast was fun...cause fighting with sabers is fun.
And in FFVII, Emmy was easy, but Ruby was hard unless you had Knights of the round and two people initally dead. |
most chinese RPG games
their bosses are so hard that u ll have to spend hours level up befor standing a chance of beating them even then u ll have to drink tons of potions and wait till they uses up their mana |

favorite boss of all time is sephiroth.
most difficult bossess at the moment (i'll post more later): M Bison in street Fighter 2. HARD. i forget his name exactly.. in final fantasy a guy named welfgar or some such turns into a demon and summon 4-6 more. hard fight last boss in FFjIV. hmm..... i'll try to t hink of more. |
the end boss in Super Ghouls n Ghosts is basically invincible until you do the game over to powerup your weapon. god that game pissed me off so many times...
|
I don't know what everyone else thinks, but the bosses from Ninja Gaiden are pretty hard once you get to the last levels. That Jaquio fag took me a lot of time to kill, and YOU DON"T EVEN GET CONTINUES!!!
|
I'm not sure exactly which one in the series it is, I think part 1, but the main boss in Final Fight on SNES was an ass. The guy's a cripple, then all of a sudden he's hopping around out of his wheelchair shooting a harpoon gun with unlimited rounds. That was hard as hell to beat.
But the best boss, in my opinion cause he was so fun to fight, was Dark Link in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It was just fun as hell to fight your shadow, and challenging cause he knew all your moves ahead of time. Psycho Mantis was cool as hell, too. |
In my limited gaming experience, I found Grunty from Banjo Kazooie ridiculously hard to beat. Bowser from Super Mario 64 wasn't hard in himself, but it was a fucking bitch trying to toss him into the bombs on the edge of the arena. Oh, and some of those bosses in Mercs were a bloody joke to beat.
|
The chopper thing in the 5th or so level in Mercswas hard as shit for me.
He nukes the fuck out you and when you think you got him he spews 15 men to kill you. But that game is ridiculouly hard for the time it was released. |
For sheer coolness factor, I'd have to go with the last boss in Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga. Difficulty-wise, I agree that the last couple ninja gaiden bosses were evil.
|
Elites on Legendary in Halo..tough bi0tches
|
Omega Pirate in Metroid Prime.
Or Jack-in-the-Box in Donkey Kong 64 |
Sonic the Hedgehog 2. In Robotnik's space fortress after the Flying Fortress, you have to fight him in this huge fucking robot suit. I never did beat the fucker.
Actually when I was about 6 I called the Sega hint line in California (for about $2 a minute), plus the long distance (I'm in Toronto), and I racked up a phone bill of $45. Rather than write the cheat down, I would just call everytime I wanted to know. |
Damn, I forgot about that!
Sonic 2, one of my top 20 games ever. It took me literally over two years to beat Robotnik (in between times of giving up and being diverted by my then new N64), and I didn't even get all the Chaos Emeralds... |
The LiquiFlame boss from Final Fantasy 5 (SNES). Thats insane! Its this flame that morphs into different forms and pounds you with crazy fireattacks. I spent hours trying to beat it. In the end, I had to throw tons of ice-swords at it, which cost me all my money to buy.
Yeah, and also Robotnik from Sonic 2. I never managed to beat that bastard. |
In Sonic 2, I could never beat Robotnic in his home town of Metropolis...
*sigh* I think I'm gonna play that game now guys, thanks a lot... *walks off, mumbling about "the one that got away"* |
I'd say Luca Blight from Suikoden II. He took about 3-4 tried for me to kill, although I'll admit I wasn't exactly equiped for the battle, and its difficulty came as a suprise.
|
While there's a lot of better/more creative bosses I've got to say the new DiabloClone from the 1.10 patch, sure, you have to *modify* some game files to make him spawn, but he's the hardest boss I've faught in a long time for sheer hitpoints alone.
|
Duriel in Diablo 2. Not necessairly the hardest, but my heart always started racing whenever I entered her chamber!
|
i agree with peppy.
The omega pirate took me a good 15-20 tries my first tie through. That guy was tough. Again in Metroid Prime, the final boss (metroid prime, duh) was cool cause it went on for so long and his second form is frickin' awesome looking! |
Man, I remember Grunty from Banjo-Kazooie...MAN!!! I hated her! Also whoever said Jack-In-The-Box from Donkey Kong 64 needs a friggin' medal. All of the Weapons in Final Fantasy 7 was hard for me, too. However, there's a game series that always had abunch of hard bosses: MegaMan! Robot Masters like QuickMan, PharoahMan, and CrashMan always gave me problems! Some were easy like ToadMan, but for the most part I'm guaranteed to lose at least one life to each Robot Master. I'm not even gonna get into the Dr. Wily bosses and such.
|
Oh, and about Metroid Prime...yeah, I just got that game last month...Jesus, heh. I only lost about two lives to the Omega Pirate, but the Final Boss made me mad. Took me about 5-10 tries, I dunno how many, and everytime I'd have it down to where you could barely see his energy in its second form. I was, oh...upset, to say the least.
|
I love all the bosses from Contra:Shattered Soldier, just cause they're so damn ridiculous and impossible, but its fun as hell to see what they'll come up with next. Also, figuring out the patterns to them reminded me of the good ol days.
|
Most recently I loved fighting Mintia on Xenosaga. It took, if I remember correctly, 1hr 12mins to finally kill her. That's not counting the two times I died before. Maybe I should have leveled up and come back later.. nah.. too fun...
I can't any really challenging or interesting bosses right now. I just wish the patterns were harder to see. |
I've played so many damn games and fought so many damn end-of-level bosses that I am ashamed to think of the numbers, but there are a few that stick in my mind:
1. The Butcher from Diablo. Sure, he's not hard if your character is strong, but since he's the first, he's tricky to beat and very, very creepy. Remember him running at your character with that evil meat cleaver and screaming about fresh meat? *shudder* 2. Goro from Mortal Kombat II. Four arms of terror! 3. The Lucifer from Descent Freespace. You're in the middle of a wormhole, your fighter won't steer properly and you're struggling to disable the shields on a mile-long enemy spacecraft. Best final fight ever! |
Anyone play Omikron: The Nomad Soul? That was a pretty unique game for its time. Plus it had David Bowie. Couldn't go wrong with that.
Anyhow, Astaroth, the final bad guy, the big bad 10-story-tall demon boss, would hop around his chamber, trying to stomp you, while your human-sized Cuchulainn had to shoot him with the magic weapon thingy in just the right spot in order to do damage. Oh and to add insult to injury, Astaroth must have had a bathtub of chili for lunch, cause he would retch these spheres of gas at you too. Was completely out of health packs, but after about 30 tries, I finally got it. Take that, you soul-stealing bastard! Ahahaha!!! |
not sure if this counts but how about magus in chrono trigger
|
My favorite game of all time is Earthbound, all the master's from that were awesome and insane. If i were going to pick the hardest it would either be ruby weapon from ff7 or sephiroth from kingdom hearts.
|
Heinrich III from Return to Castle Wolfenstein. May not be the toughest, but still pretty tough.
|
Ummm i have to agree that the final ship on Nintendo's Bionic Commando was freaking insane, you have to nail it in one shot or your dead usually took at least 5 or 6 tries. Devil May Crys boss was insanely hard for me and was getting to the final boss in BattleToads.
OOOOOOOOOOOOO anyone get to the secret mission on Tenchu:Wrath of Heaven... the final Boss of that level Mr. Ceo or some poop like that was the most insanely hard character ever created imo. I even had a health cheat and it was hard as hell. But if you have the game and haven't found the mission yet look it up. You get to execute rent-a-cops in the "present time" while sneaking into a skyscraper. Fun poop I tell ya |
Diablo or Baal, from Diablo 2:Lords of Destruction, bloody hard guys to beat
|
FFX bosses have been pretty hard to beat for me. I never played FF9, but 8 and 7 were a lot easier to beat just as they gave you more freedom to build levels. I think the hardest boss ever to beat was Chaos from FFI. I never got to beat him- my neighbor eraced my save spot, and shall forever burn in hell.
|
Going with the coolness factor, Ganondorf in Ocarina of Time is just an awesome fight. Hardest boss for me was the final one in Baldurs Gate : Dark Alliance, on extreme. Damn, she's a bitch.
|
Cool bosses would be any Dragon in Baldur's Gate II...
I think the Ultima Weapon from FF7 was pretty cool looking. Hardest? Tough to say...Ruby weapon? Any boss that you have to fight in Xenosaga before you get the AG-05? |
There's a pair of boss fights in Xenogears where you have two separate parties fight two different members of 'The Elements' one after the other. It took me about 5 tries to win the second fight, but what made it so challenging was that if you had to restart, you had sit through the same 40 minutes of dialogue all over again without falling asleep or throwing Xenogears out your window because it doesn't have a 'Speed up text' button.
|
Damn Xenogears. It was good, yet so bad.
|
I'm not quite sure of the boss's name, but in FF7 where you had to dungeon crawl from the bottom of the tower to the top, 7 levels I believe. That was the most frustrating part of any game I've played to date. Not taking into account how underdeveloped most of my FF7 characters were at the time, when I finished that they had twice the amount of power they did than when I first attempted it.
|
To take a different spin, I was really disappointed with Omega Weapon in FFX.
By the time I got to him, Yuna had gone through the circles to have all the good black magic spells, (flare, ultima, etc.) and all the best white magic spells, (holy, cure3, life2, etc.) and doublecast, PLUS she had her ultimate weapon unlocked, so all spells only cost 1 MP. Well, she also had her agility jacked up so she was the first to fight in any situation. I had her doublecast ultima and went to go fold some laundry. When I came back, the fight was over. What a gyp! |
I loved all of FFIV =P
|
The Boss at the end of Ikari Warriors III was unkillable. You lost all your weapons except your sword. I tried over 100 times to no avail. I hated that boss.
|

well its not really much, but honorable mention goes to the 3 green tenticales from Half Life 1. YOU CANT HURT THEM! and they can hear your every move. It was soooo freeky back then. It was great.
|
the hardest boss ever has to be emerald weapon from ff7, ruby weapon was a bitch too(till i discovered knights of the round and w-magic)
|
Kabuto, in 'Giants:Citizen Kabuto'...that game really isn't hard until you have to fight Kabuto as the 3 Meccs...once i found a cheap spot where he couldn't hit me, i just blasted his balls with rockets till he died :-P
|
I wish I could have seen the look on my face when I found out that to beat Sephiroths first form, I had to use party members other than the 3 that I used. Who really used everyone, I mean, you pick your favorites and stick with, right?
Thankfully, knights o da round made short work of him... |
Sephiroth is by far the coolest boss I've ever seen.
|
Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors 4 on hard was insanely tough to beat, extremely fun and a great rush when we managed it, though.
Also, old days of Everquest Lady Vox...now THAT was a fun encounter =) MB |
Oh, I just remembered the hardest boss ever... MGS2: Substance. That boss is a fucking prick, lol.
|

Someone mentioned Baulder's Gate II.....
Gaxx, the Demi-lich under the Dock District (I think..) continues to thawrt me to this day. I have no clue how to beat this bastard. Most of the secret area bosses from Valkerye Profile will rape you too. And yes, Lu Bu on Hard in DW4 is just silly...I've still yet to best him in a duel. I play way too many games.... |
Ridley from super metroid always gave me problems. Same with that shadow link guy in zelda ocarina of time.
|
Quote:
I've tried about 20 times to beat Olga on the Tanker in extreme difficulty, I came within one torso shot once, it's the only time I've ever had any trouble with a Metal Gear game, including the NES ones. |
I dont play long enough to beat games
|
don't believe they qualify as bosses, but those huge demonsr in Doom that fire the rockets can be challenging if you are playing fairly - of course I was fond of using god mode and killing them with just my chainsaw though.
|
M. Bison from street fighter 2. It was really fucking difficult to beat him
|
I enjoyed a the tough encounters of Baldur's Gate II, especially the final enounter with Irenicus, and the series of boss fights that make up Thone of Bhaal. They weren't particuarly flashy, and only some were really difficult, but the story real helps putting an edge to a boss.
|
For BGII try the final battle with Malason with the acenssion mod
|
bosses on mmorpgs are fucking tough but i guess that doesnt count, so id say seymours final form in ffx.
|
About the FF7 thing...in the red pagoda building, where after you beat it you get some Summon Materia? I think that's what you get after you beat it anyways...but I know exactly what you're talkin' about, where you'll meet Yuffie's father in there and everything.
Someone mentioned something about BattleToads being really tough (too lazy to find it and make sure)...every message board I read, anytime something tough involving gaming comes up, BattleToads gets mentioned. Sheesh! I used to beat that game all the time when I was a lil' kid! Back in the day I plowed through that game, and I never understood what makes people think that game's hard...but whatever; Tetris is insanely hard for me, so I guess we're even. |
Hardest: Last boss in FFIV (on the SNES, the psx version was easy)
Best: Kefka. |
Both the coolest and the hardest boss I've fought would have to be Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts. Sin Harvest, how I hate ye.
I remember when I first unlocked the Platinum Match and saw the introduction for Seph, I about wet myself at how cool it was. And god damn, what a bitch of a fight, I used so many elixirs. |
Metroid prime, ya what a pain in the ass. Its Firing things at you while 2 missles are locked on to you, the things its firing can burn you, freeze you so you cant fire or just blast your brains out, it blew the only rocks in the area to hide behind and you had to time when it was going to charge at you roll and go below it even if the missles have yet tobe blown up, then it fires more.
Btw, you had to use a certain gun type each time he fired the missles or he got hit because he became vulnerable to different blasts cosntantly. The second form was so annoying, I thought I beat the game then this retarded thing comes out of nowhere having to change my visor constantly then running over to puddles to attack him, while he spawns other mobs to go at you. JESUS so annoying |
The key to winning any Baldur's Gate II battle was summon spells.
4 Hasted Aerial Servants could take anything. Man,that game was TOO damn fun. |
Quote:
|
The last boss from Blaster Master is to this very day the bane of my existence.
|
Oh, man - the Lucifer.
That thing was hellish. I loved it. The Grim Reaper from Castlevania (pick which one) has always been classic, too. |
How about any of the 6 end bosses for Wolfenstein 3D? I had so much hassle killing those bastards. Played the game again recently and I can't understand why, they are easy.
|
any end boss from a mega man game. jesus.
|
Seymour Flux was a bitch to beat the first time around in FFX. I'm always one for the tough bosses, makes the game itself a whole lot better.
|
Bunch from Super Mario RPG...
Specially Culex and the Crystals, assuming you're not lame and refrained from using the Lazy Shell Armor. =Þ |
The bosses in Metroid Fusion owned me severely the first time through, now they're easier to beat than it is to pass gas after eating an extra spicy burito.
|
Boss Battles that made me want to cry:
Final Fantasy 4: any ultimate weapon guardian Final Fantasy 5: Shinjin, Omega Weapon Final Fantasy 6: Master Mage w/o Life III at level 40-ish Final Fantasy7: Ruby weapon FF Tactics: trying to steal all of elmdor's equipment, wiegraf/garifon if ramza has shitty abilities Final Fight: the wheelchair bastard Funny thing, most CRPGS allow the player to change tactics and win easily... no impossibly hard battles in fallout/deus ex/BG2/Arcanum |
Quote:
|
Quote:
*sarcasm off* As a side note, I whored my rock candies. They were my precccccious and were never used. :( The Lucifer in Freespace was another memorable foe. |
Quote:
|
The hardest boss I have ever fought in my entire life is the Egg Viper on Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast). It took my FORTY SEVEN retries to beat this stupid boss, I started counting after the 10th time....easily took up 4 hours of my life, just for one boss. 4 hours straight.
I couldn't believe a game could have a boss that fucking hard. |
Quote:
I did have trouble with the green guy that would give you spankings on Super Metroid, until I figured out that you can shock him to death. It used to take me up to 20 minutes to defeat him, which really hurt my game time in Super Speed Runs. |
Quote:
|
i thought the Bowser battles from Mario 64 were cool. even though they were pretty easy, i thought they were a fresh idea and made good use of 3D space for its time.
unless you are really leveled up or using the lazy shell, i don't see how you could consider the SMRPG version of Culex easy. although that game was of only average length and difficulty, the bosses were all pretty memorable. it has been years and i can name a whole bunch of'em. |
Quote:
Not sure how well this one counts, but Cruel Melee in Super Smash Brothers Melee. Yikes! |
Quote:
OH!!! From Fusion.. That Mechanic Organsim boss? Holy hell that one was a bitch. Shit even after learning its 4 different attack styles, I STILL have problems beating it. |
Quote:
Chrono = luminare Lavos = dead |
some of us did not have luminare at that point in the game
yea ok i rush thourgh my rpgs i would say the best boss ever is kefka form ff3 that laugh i can still hear it to this day |
Ulitmate weapons from FF7, maybe its cuz i played it when it first came out a long time ago, but those guys were hard as FUCK, especially the one that you fight in water! craps
|
Now that I give it a little more thought, I'd say that Tyrant in Resident Evil: Code Veronica. You know, the one you have to wear down, then launch out the back of the airplane with the crate? I believe I tried off and on for three days to expel that bastard, and afterward swore I'd never do it again.
