Best/Hardest Bosses!
Oh no, here's the boss!
The level boss, it's like being hit in the face with a sack of nostalgia isn't it? This thread is devoted to them, which boss is your favorite? Which boss was the hardest? For me, it has to be Emerald Weapon from Final Fantasy 7 for hardest. This mother fucker takes forever to kill with maxed out characters and the best items in the game, and even then you're lucky. The best boss is a tough one, I want to say the giant dude on the hill in mario 64. The one you get to beat the hell out of, pick up and chuck off the mountain. That guy is fun to hell. |
I play NWN on a server with a persistant world, the designers have built one of the best atmospheres I have ever seen in an online game. Including thier boss type creatures.
The best one I've had the pleasure of killing was one they have dubbed. The Great Wondering One. In older games, I would have to say Bowser from Mario Brothers. Don't ask why, I just enjoy memories from the way-back-past. |
I though the boss' in Devil May Cry 1 were utterly fantastic... just thinking about them makes me want to go out and buy that game again...
|
Shin-Akuma from Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. I've been able to beat any computer-controlled opponent before him. Beat him once, but the PS2 memory card has since gotten erased.
The very first time I beat Zeromus from Final Fantasy 2 (or 4 if your anal about nomenclature) I only had Edge standng. I couldn't believe I actually won the fight. Galamoth from Castlevania : Symphony of the Night, until I found out you can heal lightning damage from him. And the damn last boss from Rez. |
It's a little obscure, but some of the funnest boss fights I can remember were from "Mischief Makers" on the N64. Also, there was a level in one of the TMNT games where you had to toss Foot Soldiers towards the screen to defeat the boss- that was pretty innovative.
There is only one best, though... Psycho Mantis, from MGS. (I... can't read your mind!?!?) |
That damn final ship on bionic commando where you have to jump of the cliff and shoot just at the right moment to get it into its windsheild and blow it up. If you miss, you have to do the whole freakin level over again. Needless to say, i dove off that damn cliff a hundred or more times before getting it right. I just hope all that waisted time gave me better hand-eye coordination or something, other than carpal tunnel.
|
I agree with RedComet, Psycho Mantis was pretty fun, but I also agree with Deflok that every single boss in Devil May Cry 1 was hardcore awesomeness.
But my favorite boss fight in that game was Mundus in his first form, becuase that was the only time you ever got to go full form Sparda demon form and grow wings and just rock a lot of ass. |
The final boss from Jet Grind Radio..
grind grind, grind up giant gears.. spray tags while avoiding a giant golden firebreathing rhino.. then jump onto a giant turntable and spray the dj, while rhinoheaded go-go girls dance in cages.. ....trippy....... |
Gameboyfunness
Metriod Fusion..the big dragon looking thing. I walked into that room with 110 rockets, came out with MAYBE 10, and i didn't miss once. Not that hes hard to kill just a die hard. and as if it wasn't hard enough to beat the damn boss...you have to beat that little sphere that he becomes...lucky it doesn't shoot plasma at you :)
|
The best boss I can think of, was from Chrono Trigger
It's this guy, dressed as a Fisherman named Miguel. I think he was supposed to be the Gaurdian of something.. but I played the game so long ago I can't remember. One of the.. most non intimidating bosses I've ever seen. I could never beat Sin from the end of FFX, but that was mainly because Blitzball was the only thing I liked from that game, and I spent no time leveling up or doing any sidequests. |
How about the whirlwind god thingee in Serious Sam Second Encounter?
It picked you up and chucked you around while doing the same thing to a bunch of monsters that want to kill you. I thought he was a really creative monster, and a lot of fun to fight. |
When you have to fight that cyborg ninja (Grey Fox) in MGS. Sure it's easy to get the hang of, but try fighting him on harder difficulty, low rations + heavy attacks = annoyance.
|
Video games always have a pattern of some sort to work out to kill "The Boss" , so I don't find them especially hard. Annoying most definately, but not hard.
Back in my MUDding days, there were several *bosses* that seemed impossible. The MUD in question: Apocalypse V ( diku ). The *boss* in question: The Ankou . I still can't figure out how he's killed. He beats the everloving shit out of you everytime you touch him, ( he returns a % of the damage that you deal to him. ), Teleports to a GOD ONLY room when he reaches a certain # of hitpoints ( you can't teleport/scry/portal there at all ), and he heals himself something massive... Another of the *bosses*. Not exactly impossible, but takes a group of smart/heavily equipped people to take her down... The Black Widow, Alcina. Just reaching her room takes about an hour & half of preparation. Your group has to just about wipe out everything else in the zone to reach her. Then the fact that she's in a one-person-only room, and the entrance is small-sized. ( 5 player sizes in the game. Tiny/small/normal/large/giant. ) . She's got Cloak Of Midnight ( makes it impossible to see anything ), The same *skill* that the Ankou has with giving back your own damage, Fire breath/poison/cold breath ( any single one of those can kill in one shot. ), Paralyzes, and backstabs! To make it even better, the room is soundproof, so you can't escape out or call for help, and she'll loot your items off your corpse if/when you die. .... There's not many things I could compare the experience to in a video-based game. But I will say that it did take me a few hours to figure out Ruby/Emerald in FFVII. But after you've got 3x master summon matiera, 3x mime, 3x w-summon etc. etc. etc. it's pretty much a piece of cake . You can pair up the materia in such a way that after your first cast of KOTR, your whole party just continues to recast it, while absorbing back all their HPS & MPS ad infinitum. But using that setup alone with ruby got me whacked quite a few times, until I started using Alexander at the start. |
Seymour Flux in FFX just becasue I can't beat him yet...
One of the funnest bosses (if you can call them that) was the final battle in Shenmue where you fight 70 guys. It wasn't hard, but felt real good taking out 3-5 guys at once! That one opera singing boss in 'Conker's Revenge' that you had to throw rolls of toliet paper at was pretty fun too. |
Any guy with a lightsaber in JK2: Jedi Outcast was fun...cause fighting with sabers is fun.
And in FFVII, Emmy was easy, but Ruby was hard unless you had Knights of the round and two people initally dead. |
most chinese RPG games
their bosses are so hard that u ll have to spend hours level up befor standing a chance of beating them even then u ll have to drink tons of potions and wait till they uses up their mana |

favorite boss of all time is sephiroth.
most difficult bossess at the moment (i'll post more later): M Bison in street Fighter 2. HARD. i forget his name exactly.. in final fantasy a guy named welfgar or some such turns into a demon and summon 4-6 more. hard fight last boss in FFjIV. hmm..... i'll try to t hink of more. |
the end boss in Super Ghouls n Ghosts is basically invincible until you do the game over to powerup your weapon. god that game pissed me off so many times...
|
I don't know what everyone else thinks, but the bosses from Ninja Gaiden are pretty hard once you get to the last levels. That Jaquio fag took me a lot of time to kill, and YOU DON"T EVEN GET CONTINUES!!!
|
I'm not sure exactly which one in the series it is, I think part 1, but the main boss in Final Fight on SNES was an ass. The guy's a cripple, then all of a sudden he's hopping around out of his wheelchair shooting a harpoon gun with unlimited rounds. That was hard as hell to beat.
But the best boss, in my opinion cause he was so fun to fight, was Dark Link in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It was just fun as hell to fight your shadow, and challenging cause he knew all your moves ahead of time. Psycho Mantis was cool as hell, too. |
In my limited gaming experience, I found Grunty from Banjo Kazooie ridiculously hard to beat. Bowser from Super Mario 64 wasn't hard in himself, but it was a fucking bitch trying to toss him into the bombs on the edge of the arena. Oh, and some of those bosses in Mercs were a bloody joke to beat.
|
The chopper thing in the 5th or so level in Mercswas hard as shit for me.
He nukes the fuck out you and when you think you got him he spews 15 men to kill you. But that game is ridiculouly hard for the time it was released. |
For sheer coolness factor, I'd have to go with the last boss in Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga. Difficulty-wise, I agree that the last couple ninja gaiden bosses were evil.
|
Elites on Legendary in Halo..tough bi0tches
|
Omega Pirate in Metroid Prime.
Or Jack-in-the-Box in Donkey Kong 64 |
Sonic the Hedgehog 2. In Robotnik's space fortress after the Flying Fortress, you have to fight him in this huge fucking robot suit. I never did beat the fucker.
Actually when I was about 6 I called the Sega hint line in California (for about $2 a minute), plus the long distance (I'm in Toronto), and I racked up a phone bill of $45. Rather than write the cheat down, I would just call everytime I wanted to know. |
Damn, I forgot about that!
Sonic 2, one of my top 20 games ever. It took me literally over two years to beat Robotnik (in between times of giving up and being diverted by my then new N64), and I didn't even get all the Chaos Emeralds... |
The LiquiFlame boss from Final Fantasy 5 (SNES). Thats insane! Its this flame that morphs into different forms and pounds you with crazy fireattacks. I spent hours trying to beat it. In the end, I had to throw tons of ice-swords at it, which cost me all my money to buy.
Yeah, and also Robotnik from Sonic 2. I never managed to beat that bastard. |
In Sonic 2, I could never beat Robotnic in his home town of Metropolis...
*sigh* I think I'm gonna play that game now guys, thanks a lot... *walks off, mumbling about "the one that got away"* |
I'd say Luca Blight from Suikoden II. He took about 3-4 tried for me to kill, although I'll admit I wasn't exactly equiped for the battle, and its difficulty came as a suprise.
|
While there's a lot of better/more creative bosses I've got to say the new DiabloClone from the 1.10 patch, sure, you have to *modify* some game files to make him spawn, but he's the hardest boss I've faught in a long time for sheer hitpoints alone.
|
Duriel in Diablo 2. Not necessairly the hardest, but my heart always started racing whenever I entered her chamber!
|
i agree with peppy.
The omega pirate took me a good 15-20 tries my first tie through. That guy was tough. Again in Metroid Prime, the final boss (metroid prime, duh) was cool cause it went on for so long and his second form is frickin' awesome looking! |
Man, I remember Grunty from Banjo-Kazooie...MAN!!! I hated her! Also whoever said Jack-In-The-Box from Donkey Kong 64 needs a friggin' medal. All of the Weapons in Final Fantasy 7 was hard for me, too. However, there's a game series that always had abunch of hard bosses: MegaMan! Robot Masters like QuickMan, PharoahMan, and CrashMan always gave me problems! Some were easy like ToadMan, but for the most part I'm guaranteed to lose at least one life to each Robot Master. I'm not even gonna get into the Dr. Wily bosses and such.
|
Oh, and about Metroid Prime...yeah, I just got that game last month...Jesus, heh. I only lost about two lives to the Omega Pirate, but the Final Boss made me mad. Took me about 5-10 tries, I dunno how many, and everytime I'd have it down to where you could barely see his energy in its second form. I was, oh...upset, to say the least.
|
I love all the bosses from Contra:Shattered Soldier, just cause they're so damn ridiculous and impossible, but its fun as hell to see what they'll come up with next. Also, figuring out the patterns to them reminded me of the good ol days.
|
Most recently I loved fighting Mintia on Xenosaga. It took, if I remember correctly, 1hr 12mins to finally kill her. That's not counting the two times I died before. Maybe I should have leveled up and come back later.. nah.. too fun...
I can't any really challenging or interesting bosses right now. I just wish the patterns were harder to see. |
I've played so many damn games and fought so many damn end-of-level bosses that I am ashamed to think of the numbers, but there are a few that stick in my mind:
1. The Butcher from Diablo. Sure, he's not hard if your character is strong, but since he's the first, he's tricky to beat and very, very creepy. Remember him running at your character with that evil meat cleaver and screaming about fresh meat? *shudder* 2. Goro from Mortal Kombat II. Four arms of terror! 3. The Lucifer from Descent Freespace. You're in the middle of a wormhole, your fighter won't steer properly and you're struggling to disable the shields on a mile-long enemy spacecraft. Best final fight ever! |
