Mirror's Edge

Quote:

Mirror's Edge is an upcoming first person action-adventure video game being developed by EA Digital Illusions CE (DICE), due for release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2008 in the US, and November 14, 2008 in the UK, and Windows-based PCs in late winter 2008.

The game was announced on July 10, 2007 and will be powered by the Unreal Engine 3 with the addition of a new lighting solution, developed by DICE.[2] The game has a realistic, brightly-colored style and differs from most other first-person perspective video games in allowing for a wider range of actions—such as sliding under barriers, tumbling, wall-running, and shimmying across ledges—and greater freedom of movement, in having no HUD, and in allowing the legs, arms, and torso of the character to be visible on-screen.

The game is set in a conformist dystopia in which communication is heavily monitored by a totalitarian regime, and so a network of runners, including the main character, Faith, are used to transmit messages while evading government surveillance.

I can't even being to tell you how excited I am for this one, folks. The atmosphere, art direction, music, everything about this game has me completely intrigued. Definitely a must buy for launch day. I've spoken to friends of mine that have actually played it first hand at a gaming convention, and they have nothing but good things to say about it. Can't wait!

That's pretty cool looking. Kinda has a Portal vibe going on.

Baraka_Guru 10-10-2008 05:37 AM

I must admit I'm looking forward to it as well. It's looking forward to the next trend in gaming: nice graphics are easy to do now; engaging gameplay takes innovation and ingenuity.

This looks promising.

I dunno.. It looks ok I guess, are the places you need to jump and stuff always colored red? seems like you're not really exploring when everything you need to do is highlighted in red.

Bear Cub 10-10-2008 12:48 PM

That looks incredible, though I'm not sure exactly how I feel on the first person perspective.

No, the red is there only for people who would like to take the easiest way. There are numerous different ways you can get around obstacles. Going over them, under them, around, through, etc. Lots of different possibilities.

This might be the first game I'll play to give me motion sickness. It's going to be awesome.

BogeyDope 10-12-2008 11:01 PM

Thanks for the vid. That game truly does look great.

guthmund 10-15-2008 12:42 PM

I've read that they've announced there's going to a be a series a games....

I don't know. It looks good and might be a lot of fun. One of the coolest things about Assassin's Creed was the free-running stuff, so a whole game centered around that....could be very interesting.

Prophecy 11-01-2008 02:32 PM

The demo is now on PSN and Xbox Live.

I had mixed feelings going into the demo. The music for the trailer is awesome and I like the art direction. That said, I wasn't sure if the game would actually be fun or if it would be too disorienting to enjoy.

After the demo I'm definitely getting the game though as a rental. I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I'm getting the impression this is going to be like Portal: short but a memorable and wonderful experience. The demo was just long enough to get you hooked and want a bit more. Still I keep wondering if there will be more re-playability besides time trials.

With so many AA and AAA titles packed into this Christmas lead-in I'm wondering if this will get lost in the shuffle.

So if anyone wants to donate to Prophecy's game fund so I can bump up some of these rentals to purchases, feel free.

I'll be Gameflying this, but I enjoyed the demo. I'll decide for sure if it's worth a purchase after I play the full release. I didn't get get motion sickness either.

MexicanOnABike 11-02-2008 06:24 AM

This is the game that i'm the most excited about in a reallllly long time! I must have played the demo over 10 times. (ps3). i'll definitely be picking this one up.

Bacchanal 11-02-2008 09:57 AM

Already in my Game Q. As soon as I decide to send something back, I hope this will be available.

Redjake 11-02-2008 04:18 PM

Demo was pretty good. It was slightly boring until you actually had to run from people - then it got interesting. I hope it is good. Or do I? TOO MANY GOOD GAMES RECENTLY!!!!!!

MexicanOnABike 11-06-2008 03:39 AM

Ok, I just deleted the demo. I had played it over 20 times. I need to not over do it or i'll get sick of it too fast. Plus, the demo was too short. I hope the rest of the game has a bit more interaction with the environment instead of just strait lines.

Bacchanal 11-06-2008 08:02 AM

I was playing LittleBigPlanet last night, and found a user created map named Mirrors Edge. It was as similar to the game as you can be considering that the games are completely different genres.

MexicanOnABike 11-10-2008 03:59 AM

coming out tomorrow! who's picking up this title? I would wait for my PC version but with the latest talks of DRM on every fucking games, I'd rather not wait and be disappointed.

plus, my gf seems to like this title as well. i can see her playing through the main campaign atleast once.

Prophecy 11-10-2008 10:27 AM

Tomorrow ship date or release date?

Bear Cub 11-10-2008 05:22 PM

I'm surprised, it seems to be getting a lot of mainstream TV commercial air time. Some were ok, others were disappointing in that it just used actual free runners in a chase, no actual game footage, so I don't think it gave a proper understanding of what the game is about.

MexicanOnABike 11-11-2008 04:43 PM

damn!!! all my stores are either not releasing today or have none in stock. I guess I'll have to check again tomorrow. stupid release dates! this is the only game I've tried to get on release date so i'm quite disappointed.

Prophecy 11-11-2008 05:10 PM

After my own checking around no one has it locally. Hence, I'm now convinced today is/was the ship date and tomorrow is the release date.

snowy 11-11-2008 05:58 PM

I'm not sure how much I'd like to play this one myself, but I'd certainly like to see it played; it's likely one of my roommates will rent it :)

YaWhateva 11-11-2008 09:42 PM

I definitely want to play this but I hear the game is like 6-7 hours long. I'm so tired of games being so short.

I heard the same thing. A friend of mine got it yesterday and beat it last night. I planned to get it, but I'm not going to spend the money for less than a day of enjoyment.

guthmund 11-14-2008 02:45 PM

I like this game....a lot.

It's short, yes, but the replay value is actually pretty good. Speed runs, time trials, bag hunts, etc., which I initially thought were a pretty stupid idea, have turned into a big selling point as far as I'm concerned. I like banging through levels finding the perfect path, pulling off some cool shit and finding new ways to knock out bad guys.

The first person stuff is actually pretty neat. It can get a bit disorienting, especially when you try to pull off the really advanced stuff, but even then it's not that bad.

My only complaint, as far as gameplay is concerned, is that sometimes--especially on the later levels--pathfinding is incredibly difficult. There were points were I had to consult with youtube just to find the way out of the damn level. The "B" button guide thing is almost absolutely worthless whilst indoors and the red navigator thing is useful, but only when it works right. More than once I had to be on the damn ladder/pipe/whatever before it would kick red.

Prophecy 11-19-2008 12:11 PM

The PC version is going to have PhysX effects added.

damnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MontanaXVI 11-22-2008 02:52 AM

I seen a few write ups on this making people sick?

I played the demo and it just wasn't something that tickled my fancy. I play too much Resistance 2 online co-op right now anyway to buy something new.

MexicanOnABike 11-22-2008 07:51 AM

I don't know how it can make you sick... But it's got great graphics!!

I just stopped playing. Stupid level has 2 teams of swat infront and behind me. theres nowhere to go and it's impossible to grab a gun from them. fuck this.

streak_56 11-24-2008 07:09 PM

My girlfriend gets sick watching me play. I've beat it, looked into the extra gameplay but its all over for me. I really need to get my PSN account going so I can challenge myself a little more.

I didn't realize how many times I would die but it's an intense game for sure. I especially like the trophies, for advanced moves and stuff. Does anyone know what the last two trophies are for? They're blanked out for me.

I will have to look for the article just to be sure, but I am almost positive I seen it linked from Kotaku. It talked about the way you can see your arms pumping at your sides as well as your feet coming into view with strides, tucks, jumps etc.

I personally never felt anything playing the demo though.

Stare At The Sun 11-24-2008 10:47 PM

I have rather mixed feelings about this game, I just don't see it living up to what I'd want.

Are you on the level where you start coming out of the van? If so, in the back left of the "ally" is a van. Jump on top of it. Behind the van is a pole you climb up. From there your above the ducts, you should be able to see where you need to go from there. Generally when I got stuck the hint button helped in every case but once.

The DLC was announced today & arrives in Jan. 2009. It's pure time attack trials/ levels.
