My only gripe with the first Gears was the retarded host advantage in multiplayer. They're supposed to be fixing that in Gears 2 and if that's the case then I think it'll steal me away from CoD4.

In an interview with the devs, I saw that they will "not be making the game for the PC"...which I translate as meaning that us PC gamers will have to wait for another year before they realize that they can make even more money by porting it.
So I'm looking at the awesome gameplay trailers for GOW2, and loading GOW1 again just to torture myself |

So, anyone pick it up yet? Got it on Friday and haven't stopped playing the multiplayer. I really should start the campaign soon. >_> I keep hearing good things about Horde mode too, but the multi is just too fun.
GameFly sent me Resistance 2 also, but it will probably be ignored for a little bit, lol.

I got my copy on launch day and have been addicted to playing Horde mode ever since. At some point I need to go back and actually try the single player campaign, but for right now mulitplayer is fine. Only real complaint is match-making is less than stellar right now. Five plus minutes to find a team is not a good thing.
What's the highest anyone has gotten on Horde? My highest is 12 sadly. With my pick-up teams regularly getting destroyed on wave 10, 11 or 12 of normal, I'm wondering what waves 30+, 40+ and 50 would be like on insane would be like.

I've been told level 50 on insane is....well, insane. For those that haven't been through the campaign, take a break and give it a shot. The first GoW campaign wasn't all that great; this one is leaps and bounds better.

I didn't finish the first GOW, I quit about 20 minutes before the last boss. I put a little over 2 hours into GOW 2 so far and I must say, I'm liking it a lot more than I expected. The gameplay isn't so much duck and cover, move forward and duck and cover again. You really get a lot of chances to flank the hell out of the enemies and at times you get to choose which direction you take. Depending which path you choose you're doing something different and I think that will add some replay value when I move up to the harder difficulty. The game looks great. It's defintiely an improvement over the first. I haven't tried Multiplayer yet. I probably won't since I suck at competitive MP.

I'm glad that I'm not the only person that has never played GoW multiplayer.
I have GoW2 and made it into the early caverns level. So far it's fun as hell. Sadly enough I had to return my 42" LCD to the store because it was a piece of crap so right now I have no gigantic TV to play it on. |

The last battle on GOW1 was probably the hardest part of the entire game and it took me about two hours to finally kill the boss.
Just finished GOW2 Monday night, but had a difficult time during the last act when my squad was dodging other reavers. I don't want to spoil anything just yet, maybe in a week? |

I thought this game had some AMAZING writing and voice acting in it. The scene where Spoiler: Dom finally finds Maria is probably one of the saddest scenes in a game I've ever played. Well done Cliffy B, well done!

Yes, I don't get how they made it so emotional but there was more emotion evoked in that scene than in the entirety of MGS4.

Me and my buddy finished the game playing Co-op. Got the "Friends with Benefits" achievement.
Holy hell, I couldn't see trying this game in solo mode. The trek through the rock worm innards was one of the best parts. Btw, we finally made it through the 10th level on Horde mode, got the cheevo, and then quit. It was too hard on the easiest setting. I sent it back to Gamefly the next day.

I beat this with GF on normal and hardcore, beat level 50 on Horde and haven't played since. It's a great game, but it's not drawing me the same way GoW did. Maybe because of how many OTHER good games are out.. or how many other games I own now vs then.

To me there just wasn't enough different to keep me hooked. Great game, but the earth shattering graphics of the first one didn't happen again the 2nd time around (first one had graphics years ahead of its time), and it seems like other games do the same thing as Gears of War except add way more (GTA4 anyone?). The story was really good and there was a surprising amount of emotion, but once I beat the single player I did a couple of matches of multiplayer and traded it in.

After beating it, I realized it was really only fun because I'd never done co-op survival mode in a FPS (technically, third person). Even COD WaW's zombie survival mode is more entertaining, to be honest.

On GOW2: I felt like the graphics advanced form the first one: not in terms of texture quality, but the application of the engine. Where GOW had tons of atmosphere - who didn't have sweaty palms the first time facing the berseker - GOW 2 played like a fast-paced movie - from confined spaces, to wide open landscapes etc, and they really used the unreal engine well to take you along on this surreal ride. And its not just cover and shoot, cover and shoot - they created excellent terrain and spaces to fight it out in - GOW2 is a better tactical shooter than GOW. I agree that Horde is by far the most compelling thing about the game, but it doesnt need anything else. The only objective-based multiplayer game I play these days is Halo3, so i get those kicks there.

Oh come on. Saying "GTA4 sucked" is a bit of an overstatement don't you think? I agree with everything you said except for the cover system which I thought worked good but not great. The cars actually handled great but you're right, the sense of speed wasn't very good until you got in the super high end cars. But the rest of the game obviously elevates it above "sucking" status.
