Buying a Nintendo DS...
Do you all have any reccomendations for games?
I bought one when they originally came out, the big old ugly grey DS Phat, and there really weren't any games I absolutely HAD to buy. I had, I think the only game I had, was Super Mario 64/DS. So, when no good games came out for years, I sold it. Now, if only for the fact that there's a Guitar Hero with some pretty good songs on it coming out, I'm seriously giving thought to purchasing a DS Lite. So, instead of getting recommendations from all sides, let me tell you what kind games I really don't like: RPGs. The really instense, FF-esque, skill building, flying ship having, giant hair and sword weilding protagonist kind of games. Of course, that's not to say I don't like Pokeman. I love me some pokemans. Anyway, I really like the shoot em up, action kind of games. I saw that they even have a Resident Evil out on DS now, has anyone played it? All recommendations are greatly appreciated! |
I LOVE my nintendo DS. It is by far my favorite console, and gets way more play time than my other ones (including Wii and PS3). I love the RPG's though, I'll leave them out of my list.
Mario Kart DS - probably my favorite Mario Kart, has online WiFi play, lots of tracks, lots of characters, lots of fun Meteos - great puzzle game, involves sliding blocks to create rows or columns of similar blocks, and propelling them into the air off the screen... bad explanation, great game. Lots of fun with friends over wireless play. Only need one cartridge to play wireless. Puzzle Quest - great puzzle game with RPG elements Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime - action adventure, kinda like zelda Zelda: Phantom Hourglass Contra 4 - plays like contra 3 on SNES, exept harder Rune Factory - an RPG/farming sim Final Fantasy Tactics A2 - strategy RPG, involves "skill building", but still awesome Front Mission - strategy RPG featuring customizable robots Lunar Knights - isometric action-rpg by konami Elite Beat Agents - AWESOME rhythm/puzzle game that involves screen tapping Pokemon Pearl/Diamond - yep, it's pokemon... doesn't deviate from the formula Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin - both awesome, but I like Dawn of Sorrow more Kirby: Canvas Curse - unique platformer that involves you "drawing" platforms for kirby, which you don't directly control New Super Mario Bros. - GREAT mario game, MUST BUY if you enjoy any of the NES/SNES mario games There are a lot more, these are just games that happen to be in my DS case at work right now, lolz. |
The World Ends With You - One of the best handheld RPGs I've ever played, mostly because of the great story and departure from the traditional swords and sorcery RPGs Squeenix puts out. You said you don't like RPGs but this one doesn't require any grinding and there aren't any swords. The combat is all touch screen based too.
Space Invaders Extreme - While not a super epic game, it is a great update to the classic Space Invaders with plenty of psychedelic colors and music to keep you entertained. Trauma Center 1 & 2 - Cool medical game with great touch screen usage. It's just like being a real surgeon! Well, sort of... Phoenix Wright and Apollo Justice games - They're called adventure games but they're more like an interactive story with Apollo Justice having much more interaction than the first few. Great games with some really cool storylines in the cases. Advance Wars - Very good turn based tactical game. Both the first and the second are good if a bit similar with the first having more of a cartoonish look and the second more realistic and gritty. Ninja Gaiden - Hack and slash action game with ninjas, what more can I say? Great touch screen control too. Professor Layton and the Curious Village - All this game is is a series of puzzles and riddles but it's a lot of fun with a unique look although some of the puzzles are a bit out there. Bleach: Blade of Fate - Hands down the best fighter on the DS, it even has wifi multiplayer! Nanostray 2 - Pretty decent shoot-em-up, notable mainly because the DS lacks shoot-em-ups for some strange reason. |
Oh, here's another question! I have a PSP that I barely ever use, but one of the coolest things I remember is that I was able to encode movies and upload them on the device.
Now, I know the DS is nowhere near as advanced as the PSP, but can I watch movies on it? And I don't mean little clips, I mean... Feature length films. Can it be done? |
My daughter loves her Cookin' Mama II. :p
She plays some Mario and Pokemon games, too, but I couldn't tell you which ones...even though I bought them, lol. And she still plays all of her GameBoy games. From the little I've seen, it's a very charming little system in both appearance and features. |

Yeah, the DS is definitely not a multimedia device like the PSP... but the quality of the games make up for it. The PSP is great, but I can get a similar gameplay experience with my PS2, the DS is completely different.

If you can find metroid pinball you should pick it up. Why? It comes with a rumble pack!
Also don't forget that the DS plays Gameboy Advance games. You should pick up the legend of zelda four swords and minish cap. |
I have a DS and love playing around with Pokemon on it as well as Mario Kart.
I didn't care for the new Zelda game as it was total touch screen for movement etc. just not something I cared very much for. I will have to go through this list and check out some of these games since many of them I had never even heard of. |
Thanks for all your recommendations y'all! I'm definately going to be picking up a DS sometime this month.
And, as much as I hate RPGs, I trust that the ole TFP wouldn't lead me astray with game suggestions. ...Now I just gotta find the money to buy all these games! Oh, one other thing, does anyone use those scratch resistant film? What brand(s) would you suggest? And are they really hard to put on? |
Get Mario Kart and Phoenix Wright. Brain age is fun for the Sudoku, but the rest of it got boring after a while. Get Mario Kart.

I almost forgot about Brain Age, I never messed with part 2, or Big Brain Academy but I love me some Brain Age. Really easy to get your brain age down to 20 though.
Brain Age is also a big must get. |
I play Mario Kart, Mortal Kombat, Assassin's Creed, Zelda (which I really thought was awesome), Trauma Center.
Also, keep an eye out for the Korg DS-10 Synthesizer. KORG DS-10 synth turns Nintendo DS into instrument of awesomeness - Engadget |
Regarding shooting games, the best one I've hear of it Touch the Dead. Great 3d graphics for the DS and the gameplay makes good use of the touch screen. And since it plays GBA games, hunt down copies of Wario Ware, which are better than the DS version :)

^^ agreed. Zelda with touch turned out great. Also, keep your eyes peeled, new wii zelda, mario and pikmin games were announced at E3 08, by Miyamoto himself.
