Should I get an XBox 360 elite?
Can you guys tell me what reasons I would need a 120 gb 360 elite rather than 20 gb regular one? What are the differences in consoles? I know that with a bigger HD you can mod it. But what other reasons?

Actually from what I hear its all 360's that die. My brother had 3 (yes 3) elites crap out on him. Luckily he paid a little extra for the IPR plan at ebgames and was able to just swap em out each time it happened. Still a pain in the ass. Lucky number 4 is still going strong for him.
I say don't even get the 360 unless you absolutely have to have one. I want one, but I am waiting until microsoft fixes the massive amount of problems it has. |

They're not gonna get much more fixed than they are now. One of the recent consoles is far more likely to crap out because of cooling issues than from a hardware fault.
The only difference between the Elite and the other models is the larger HDD. It was the first to have HDMI but that's now standard.

iirc the elite has a smaller version of a certain chip that was the mainoverheating problem in the other versions of the systems. They are less likely to red ring on you by far but that doesnt mean it wont happen.
Personally i prefer the look of the elite over the regular. I have an elite myself and i love the black. The white gets dirty looking very easily, especially the controllers. The hard drive size isn't that much of a big deal unless you plan on getting a bunch of stuff off xbox live. There's lots of good stuff on there so you may end up doing that. Downloading movies and tv shows isn't going to take up much room because once you watch them you can only watch them again within 24 hours and you only have 1 week to watch them the first time (i think) before you cant watch them. At which point you need to delete them cuz you wont be able to watch them again. Game saves and xbox live game demos will eventually add up tho and you'll be thankful you have the larger HD. From what i remember the 20gb HD really only has something like 13 or 16GB available for you to use. So you don't really get a 20gb HD.

Elite used the smaller processor die for video and CPU, if I recall correctly. I got one becuase of the HDMI and because 120GB of HDD is much, much nicer. My 20GB was almost filled on my standard one. *shrug* LOTS of XBLA games and DLC, especially for Rock Band.
I disagree with blahblah. The RRoD issue is warranted regardless of type or purchase date. I would recommend one regardless because the 360 is by and large my favorite console for variety of games, online services and matchmaking capabilities in games.

Concerning everyone saying that 360's break, yes, that was true, but to be honest, the newer ones don't break any more than any other system. I work in a store where we only sell video games and consoles, and ever since the new chip sets came out on the 360, we don't get them back defective anymore.

So Microsoft engineered poorly the first go, then fixed the primary problem, but it's still substandard? What about the PS3? I hate Sony, and would never recommend buying a PS3, but it's not "sub-standard". Meh... to each his own I suppose!

Uhm... Computer hardware has been failing since 1947. It's nothing new.

Basic rule of thumb. If you're buying a 360 new, and have HDMI TV (or will in the near future) get an elite. If you have an old tv, and don't plan on getting a new one, you're fine with the original.
The HDMI cable is pretty expensive, if you buy it after buying a new 360 it doesn't make sense. The money difference when you factor that in isn't that much between the two consoles. Personally I love the look of my 360, but I chose elite for HDMI/120gig hard drive more than anything else.

Yup, but HDMI cables are a dime a dozen (almost) these days. Just don't pick one up from a big box retailer and you are fine. www.monoprice.com ftw. Man, I'm like a damned commercial for those guys LOL

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok so i got my elite and halo3 from craigslist for $400. both brand new and sealed. then i got live, rockband, and call of duty 4. this all occurred within two weeks. i make sure i don't play too long so i don't get that ring. plus, it's really important to get the bigger HD if you are a hardcore gamer because alot of these games have updates and downloads which take up alot of space.

RRoD shouldn't be an issue on elites... at least not nearly as often. Make sure it is not on a carpeted floor... set it on a hard surface (like a TV stand) so that it gets ventilation.
What is your gamertag? Mine is XephOne... add me!
